Roses are blooming here. Relative tranquility this morning till the lawn mowers started next door. Not sure why the big coop can't mow their lawn during the week. Don't the Mexicans need the weekend off for soccer?
I am surprised at how nice the garden is starting out this year. It must have been all the snow during the Winter. But it has been very dry ever since.
Since this blog is called "Lifeinbklyn," I thought it might be wise to mention that in Brooklyn, there was very little snow. Maybe that's why Pete's irises did poorly. (Or maybe he's talking about upstate irises? Did it snow a lot at your other house, Pete?)
I think the comments on the house regarding its origins were right. There is definitely a two story Italianate under there. The tower and turret and third floor and other additions were added in later. Very cool house.
Never been to Camden, but do know that that area is snow country. They probably get more snow than the Buffalo area does.
No wonder the last owners left. The comments in the article note that the last couple to own the house were from Long Island. They didn't research the area, but loved the house. The winters were too much for them.
That's a lot of snow. They probably just thawed out in the beginning of May. (I am aware that 176" of snow doesn't all fall at once.)
As you can see in the aerial photo, the name of the nursery is "Green Thumb", and we call him "Nick Green Thumb".
The nursery was his life's work. He bought it after college and ran it for 30 years, plus he lived on the property. He used to operate both a retail business and wholesale for landscapers. Due to Home Depot, the retail business vanished and at the end, the nursery was a money-losing operation. He had to give it up.
They won't allow a HD or Lowes here on the Cape. Lots of great nurseries but one newer very large one went out of business a year ago after only being open a year or so. Spent a fortune on greenhouses. There is one small one but well stocked right here in town across Route 6 and then a very good, large one 10 minutes away in Truro where I have benn getting most of my stuff and my mulch for years.
I just cleaned all the dead shit off the deck. Looks much better, even if it is mostly empty pots. I have a major infestation of portulaca that I'm going to let thrive. And a minor one of dill, that can stay, for now.
Yes, they are pretty, with very minimal maintenance. And the seeds spread like crazy! I have sprouts of them in nearly every pot I have. There is one that even grows in a crack in the stone on the deck. I know I shouldn't let it, but I find it amusing, so I let it stay.
Garden here looks good. Beans all up as are cukes, parsnips, potatos and carrots. Asparagus not up yet. I don't think there has been any rain here at all since I planted. Putting in rhubarb and more asparagus, the purple ones.
No. I used to have a space in the community garden a few doors away but really don't have the time to keep it up. They get bitchy if you let the weeds go. As it is, there are lots of fresh herbs growing in there so I always have my pick of them when I need them.
During a press conference at a local hotel in Islamabad, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islami Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman asked the Pakistani armed forces to launch a military operation against women wearing jeans all over Pakistan.
According to him, the immodesty of women is the cause behind earthquakes, inflation and other kinds of disasters.
Fazlur Rehman went on to say that a woman who is not covered like a 'sack of flour' is a mobile weapon of mass destruction for her state and that Pakistan has multitude of such nuclear missiles in all its major cities.
Rehman then blamed 'immodest women' for the Baluchistan crisis, lack of energy supply and the deteriorating security situation in Pakistan.
Fazlur Rehman was suggesting that, if these women are wrapped in sacks and kept inside homes and if the Shariah law was in place, then the Taliban brothers would not be attacking Pakistan.
I'm glad he's in it. He will force Hillary to address issues important to progressives that would other wise get brushed under the rug if she was running unopposed
I think she's being forced to do that anyway, due to the popularity of Elizabeth Warren's message. Hillary sounds a lot less centrist than she did 8 years ago.
Would it be bad if I wrapped the plug/connector parts of my outdoor fairy lights with some kind of tape? Every time it rains, or snows or my upstairs neighbors water their plants, it causes a short and I can't use them for a day.
Makes as much sense as blaming the Texas floods on the lesbian mayor of Amarillo:
An extremist Christian group is stirring controversy by claiming that the deadly floods to strike Houston are God’s judgment for the city electing a lesbian mayor.
The organization, Repent Amarillo, posted a Facebook message also blaming the women’s health organization Planned Parenthood.
“Houston is suffering the WRATH OF GOD for electing a LESBIAN MAYOR. Repent Amarillo organized a boycott of Houston back in 2010 and warned of the danger of electing a perverted homosexual as mayor and opening the largest abortion clinic in America. HEY HOUSTON! Are you LISTENING TO GOD NOW!? Does God have your attention? Are you to vote that pervert Anise Parker back in office again? Are you going to continue allowing Planned Parenthood to DROWN HOUSTON IN BLOOD? Repent and turn from your wickedness.Seek God and His mercy while it may yet be found.â€
yes, smells like ailanthus has started. I assume someone is not sitting out on terrace like was earlier that I saw. Also - nobody cooking outside nextdoor this evening either I bet.
I just hope the creek doesnt overflow. If it stays this heavy for a few hours, it could happen especially since the ground is so dry with lots running off
My wife and I took a drive to the Rockaways to take in the ocean a bit. We drove the "Arverne-by-the-Sea" development out there. Holy Moly, has that development boomed out there! It's probably doubled in size since I last saw it, and judging by the prices for the latest phase, they've been successful. Ocean-front 2 family house now goes for $1.2 Million and all but three are sold out. A few years ago they were asking about $650K. We walked through the sales model, and they are really nice.
How different is The Silk Road from Craigslist, Facebook, High-Frequency Trading Platforms, or Commercial Banks? Discuss.

The weather felt like I was in the UAE.
After the race saw a dozen people with huge camera setups looking at a nest in a tree by the Sheep Meadow.

The web-page quotes a price of $675,000. That is for homes set back from the ocean. The price for homes directly facing the ocean is $1.2 million.
