Happy cabin fever day.
February 16, 2015 8:17 AM - Partridge
Wow, had no idea that ticket prices to Europe had gotten so expensive. Cheapest economy, booked well in advance for low season is now $1100. Taxes and stupidity included. Thought I'd go visit my friend in the UK. Gotta think on this now.
February 16, 2015 8:22 AM - Deleted
Total bs LP. Gas prices are low too.
February 16, 2015 8:28 AM - Cobble B. Hiller

Not cheap. Have you tried Expedia, and setting up an alert for London or wherever you want to go? Then when special fares appear, you get an email. That's what I do for our trips. Then you can also fidget with dates to get fares even lower.
February 16, 2015 8:30 AM - DeLepp
Part, there are still gas fees on international tickets for US. Not so for other countries. Kinda nuts.
February 16, 2015 8:36 AM - sixyearsandcounting
I've been following fares for London for awhile now. Totally outrageous. The only affordable flight is on Air India, operated by Kuwait Airways. Kuwaitis avoid Kuwait Airways at all costs - airline just bought its first new planes in decades.

Might be worth looking for fares from DC or Boston or even Philaderpia.
February 16, 2015 8:39 AM - Deleted
You could crash at dibs house the night before the flight (BYA).

Speaking of I hope dibs is ok and the cold didn't knock him out too bad.
February 16, 2015 8:42 AM - Partridge
And now for some really bad news...

Water pipe for the coffee machine at my deli frozen. Need to have a Manhattan Special instead.

It is beyond cold out there but the wind has subsided.

Randi, I was thinking the same thing.

Partridge, oh the horror, to go out in this weather and not get your coffee!
February 16, 2015 8:45 AM - Partridge
Or Iceland Air and SAS $822, Six. Makes the 6.5 hour flight a 14 hour nightmare. No thanks.
February 16, 2015 8:47 AM - Cobble B. Hiller
Might be time for emergency measures, LP...make coffee at home! (Gasp!) ; )

how about making own coffee and put that extra money toward flight?
February 16, 2015 8:53 AM - Partridge
I don't think stopover is permitted on the fare and of course hotel room eats savings and then... I'm in fuckin' Iceland for no fuckin' reason. ;)
February 16, 2015 8:56 AM - Partridge
No difference, Cobble. I will check Philaderpia just in case.

What coffee beans and milk are free? My guys are cheap, Pete. No fancy coffee for me.

A movie that i directed a few years back before I wasted so much time here is finally getting released in about a month. It's about the band the police. Playing in 2 theaters in Manhattan.

I was waiting for the ridiculous doctor recommendation and knew it would be Cobble. If there were a cure for the cold or flu we would know about it, it's why the OTC market has so many "remedies"

Tamiflu is supposed to lessen the symptoms of flu and make the illness 2 days shorter or something.

Advil and Tylenol are much better at fever suppression than aspirin, but knowing how much dibs drinks he is correct to be concerned about his liver.
February 16, 2015 9:59 AM - dibs
Just took an advil.
February 16, 2015 9:59 AM - rf
Ibuprofen in the same family as aspirin and more effective. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is the problem with liver damage.

Tamiflu (oseltamivir) Side Effects:
Digestive upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain)
Psychiatric symptoms (hallucinations, abnormal behavior, self harm)
Skin Reactions (any rash or allergic reaction must be reported immediately as it could become very serious)
February 16, 2015 10:36 AM - rf
From the CDC FAQ:
Some side effects have been associated with the use of flu antiviral drugs, including nausea, vomiting, dizziness, runny or stuffy nose, cough, diarrhea, headache and some behavioral side effects. These are uncommon. Your doctor can give you more information about these drugs or you can check the CDC or the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) websites.

February 16, 2015 2:59 PM - Partridge
I placed a re-order with a company at the show for a couple of items to ship now and many items to ship in May. I received the 'ship now' items this week. The quality of one of the items (plain brass bands in varying sizes and widths) had changed. I have old ones still in stock to compare them to. I emailed the owner/designer of the small, feel-good, 'help the African women in a small village' company, telling her that the quality was not the same - the new ones have sharp edges and are not rounded and polished on the sides. I asked her, "What can be done?"

Instead of answering me herself, she passed the email to a co-worker whose title is "Sales". I'm fine with that. We are all busy, that's why we hire people to help us.

She responded by saying that "Unfortunately this is how they are being made." and offered an entirely different style for me to consider which has "the rounded edges I prefer". Prefer? Jewelry shouldn't be sharp.

I'll take the loss on the bad rings but went ahead and cancelled the rest of my order. About $1200 worth.

Not a big deal, but I don't like bait and switch and I expect designers to perform quality control even if their goods are made in small African villages.

In a speech to students at Georgetown University, FBI director James Comey quoted a Broadway song called “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist,’’ and said more work needed to be done to help police officers and people in minority communities see each other fairly.

I'm trying to find what to do after cruise at Denali. Don't want to be stuck on tour bus just looking at scenery.

Pete, go on Trip Advisor or Lonely Planet for ideas?

Watching SW tribute. Trying to stay awake until 10, so I don't wake up at 4am. I'm very tired.

Tony Bennett is 88 yrs old. Amazing energy.

That's super expensive, dudley. Tuition + airfare + hotel + food + transfers = prolly over $3k.

Fine. Maybe I should just sit in Prospect Park picking my nose. That will fer sure get me out of this horrible rut. :/ I can't even share my life plans here without people immediately pointing out the supposed flaws in any of my plans (like everywhere else!) So frustrating.

It's not a flaw if you can afford it. Can you afford $1800 tuition? I was just surprised at cost when I did the math in my head. Maybe there is a weekend workshop here or nearby?

I don't want to invest, or waste, any money in NYC or on anything NYC related.

All I can say is that you should save as much as you can, make a plan, and perhaps you can make it happen.
