64 degrees is lovely. Tomorrow I'll be suffering with 99 degrees in San Antonio.

July 25, 2013 7:55 AM - dibs
Sure. But those parts given away would have to incorporate as new cities i would suspect, or be brought under the jurisdiction of another city, which is far from likely to happen.

I'm sure given the fact that the Democrats and unions run the city, there's no thinking out of the box on this.

July 25, 2013 9:21 AM - Arkady
Price depends on amount of disruption. Some shoots call for removing all furniture & redoing decor (w or w/o restoration of former look) & being there for upwards of a week. I've known neighbors who only got a couple of grand & some who got upwards of $20,000. Seems to me that years ago you got a lot more than is common today.

How is that Gothamist MTA story news in any way?
Around 5 years ago, the MTA announced that they would move to a system of regular fare hikes every 2 years, and have kept to that schedule.
I think it is a very sensible policy, given the realities of the MTA budget.

July 25, 2013 9:34 AM - dibs

The Center packed up Juan's belongings and put them in "safe-keeping". It is now Thursday and they still can't find them. They include:

His clothes (shirts, pants, socks, pajamas, jacket, sweatshirt) Luckily I had brought home some laundry, so he's got about 4 outfits.
Money (which his bro left for him)
Board games/cards
Elec. Razor/manicure set
Snacks (Rubbermaid container with cereal, soup, gravy, cookies, etc)/paperplates/paper cups/utensils
Tissues/Wet wipes
Rosary Beads
All the therapy gadgets I've collected over the past months

I'm pissed, just left a message for the director of Housekeeping.

The MTA in recent years has taken a relative hard line with the Unions - witness the strike and the current lack of a new contract.
They have also had very significant expense cutting, including eliminating station agents, consolidating back office functions, and service cuts on low performing lines.

However, they cannot unilaterally undo the sins of the past in terms of benefits and work rules. It will take strong political will and support from Albany to materially cut labor and benefit costs any more.

I would rather the MTA have a plan for reviewing their fares and tolls and adjusting them on a regular basis rather than going into unplanned crisis mode with emergency fare increases or service cuts when they unexpectantly run short of cash.

July 25, 2013 9:48 AM - Deleted

Some forward-looking mayors of declining cities are trying a new approach called "planned shrinkage". Youngstown, OH and Rochester, NY are at the forefront of this approach. Basically it involves demapping designated areas of the city and turning it into parkland. The benefits are twofold: a) it reduces demand for service and the stress of the city's budget and b) improves quality of life via more parkland, hopefully making the city more attractive for new industries and people. It's not a politically easy approach, however, as it involves condemning properties and telling people that their neighborhood is going to be wiped out.

In the corporate world, this approach would be called "rightsizing".

If you look at the safety of the cruise industry, it has an excellent record. Cruise lines that do not maintain good standards are punished in the marketplace. Almost daily I get e-mails from Carnival in which they practically give away rooms.

LOL, rf. Back in my political days more than 20 years ago, we used to do little exposes on how many "vice presidents" the TA had. Worse than a bank. At peak, they almost hit 3000. I think they were trying to bust a union by promoting all its members into management and giving them raises for doing the same jobs. Talk about pyrrhic victories.
July 25, 2013 10:16 AM - rf
I hope the administration of the MTA is not like it used to--top-heavy and extremely well-paid with luxurious benefits. Very 1 percent.

What should the cost of transportation to work or school or shopping or recreation be? More or less than the cost of 1/2 gallon of milk, cup of swell coffee, a dozen eggs?
July 25, 2013 10:20 AM - Deleted
Slopey and Rf;

Shall we tell the whole story?

The reason the MTA had so many VP's was because the middle-level managers used to also belong to the TWU and as such, there was little accountability (i.e. they could not be fired for poor performance). The only way around this situation was to promote people to a level (VP) where they played by the rules which management must abide.

One of the most significant victories the MTA won (around 1984 or so) was to de-unionize middle management.
July 25, 2013 10:23 AM - BirdnestHead
work n school transportation via "public" transortation should be gov subsidized, not run on a for-profit model.

Shopping n recreation, you're on your own. Unless physically disabled, in which case distribution of food becomes an issue. Subsidized delivery? Community volunteerism?

Actually, it wasn't the TWU, but a much smaller union, in the TA's case, that most of those VPs came from.

But the timing makes sense. The VPs peaked around 1990. But it was costly.

I just called housekeeping and spoke to the director. They do not pack up a room, they only transport and they have no record of transporting our items. So back to square 1. Them: pause, pause.....I drove past your house on XXX Street. (Brooklyn)
Me: And????
Them: I want to buy it.
Me: I don't own it anymore. I haven't owned it since last September.
Them: It's really run down. I want to buy it.
Me: I have no control over that, it's no longer my property.
Them: Oh, you don't own it?
Me: (gritting teeth) No, I told you, I sold it last September. You'll have to look up the new owner.
Them: You don't have their number?
Me: (last nerve plucked) No, if you can find my name and phone number in another city, you can find their number.
Them: I really want to buy it.
Me: I can't help you.

There are a multitude of small towns, Part. Not trying to be a shill for, but you might want to take a look at, and read the archives. They do a pretty good job of chronicaling the kinds of towns that would interest you, as that is their demographic, as well. They often look at commercial/residential properties. Also check, which covers much of upstate NY. You can get an idea of prices and offerings. As a real estate junkie I look at it all the time, and there are always interesting properties in these small towns: churches, schools, old firehouses, storefronts, etc. The prices are often amazing, but most of the towns within a two hour radius have pretty high property taxes which often offset a cheap, or at least reasonable price.

Old manufacturing cities that have gone to hell and are trying to come back, like Newburgh, have really reasonable properties with low taxes, but come with urban woes that you might not want to deal with, although they are getting better all the time. Troy is better off than Newburgh, btw. Real estate is really cheap here, but it's much further away than you want to be.

I have a friend who lived in Beacon. She blogs under, and used to come to brownstoner functions before your time. She lives in Bed Stuy. She and her husband renovated a Queen Anne in Beacon and loved it there. They sold the house because they were getting spread too thinly financially, especially since the crash. She always told me that Beacon had some great properties, and was a great town. It's just across the Hudson from Newburgh, but is more affluent and stable, not not too too, like Rhinebeck or some of those very posh towns.

I thought Red Hook (the town, not the hood) was kind of lively. Just a few miles from Rhinebeck. A very small but cute villagae is Tivoli, near the Bard campus. Closer to home and kind of gritty but with some life as of a few years ago is Peekskill. We had a great father's day dinner at a place with live jazz a few years back. And yes, check out the painted ladies in Beacon, thogh the town is both depressed and overhyped at the same time, so a bit of a glut of people in your business and a very hippy-ish vibe (so lots of artsy doings, not so much artsy spending). On the west bank there's Nyack (not cheap, not far from city, but cute and bustling), Haverstraw may be having a bit of a moment, you might check out Cornwall, too.

LOL, from one of Dave Weigl's posts on Slate:

Standing by your husband when he keeps disappointing you is, sadly, an ordinary thing. Making connections in D.C. and then cashing in on them is also pretty ordinary. The single most irritating aspect of the Weiner scandal is that we're being asked to buy tickets for this third-rate psychodrama. The Weiner-Abedin marriage is to the Clinton marriage as "Sharknado" is to "Jaws."

Beacon's a little more complex though, because of Dia. Draws a downtown modern art crowd along with the tourists. So, a Pete Seeger smoothie spiked with a little Warhol.

One thing you should consider in your calculations. In the eyes of most dasterdly bankers, 2 fam + store = commercial building and as such, they usually want at least 30% down. Also, interest rates are higher.

Most train systems around the world do not have speed controls that adjust to the section of track they are one.

In the NYC subway there are very few places where the signal system controls speed, and there have been accidents caused by trains going too fast.

July 25, 2013 2:15 PM - petebklyn
Hudson more than 2 hours. Catskill also more than 2.

Beacon has some foot traffic because of DIA. Cold Spring is nice and close to Beacon.
Ulster county are New Paltz, Woodstock, Saugerties.

LOL, scott. The quote: "I don't believe I had any more than three."

Either he actually doesn't know, or there's more than 3 but he is hoping we don't hear about more than 3. Either way, he keeps the story going by sounding weaslly. If on Tuesday he said: Yea, I screwed up. I texted with exactly four women after resigning, but I stopped with all of them, the last one in [date]" -- he has a bad 48-hour news cycle that either dies down or kills the campaign, but by being weaselly, he ensures that this will continue to be the story of his campaign for the foreseeable future.

Oy, stay away from New Hope.

Jersey side -- Lambertville, Stockton, Frenchtown. Lambertville gets lots of spillover from New Hope and has real antique and home furnishing businesses, not just tchotches for tourists and tweens like in New Hope.
PA side -- Lumberville, Point Pleasant, Erwinna and, dare ai say it, Carversville (you'll do a brisk business in antique, hand-carved phalli there). The PA river towns are all tiny but have really cute houses and (I would think) decent 3-season weekend traffic. Inland, you could look at Doylestown. Way up river, north of Delaware River Water Gap, there's Milford.

Agreed, benson. WIthout that, he'd be out already because he could not raise money. With it: 1. He's got an important advantage over his rivals and could be banking on ads to get him back into lead or at least runoff; and 2. he spends a ton and there's a reservoir of support within the professional political community for his next comeback.

Why anyone would post here while on vacation is mind-boggling. I had a conversation with Triple D today and he told me that I have to pull the plug on this place because it's the same thing EVERY SINGLE DAY. Same people, same posts, from 7am until the last person appears to pass out from booze. It has become impossible for me not to be judgemental because of how insular and cliquish it is here. I know, don't let the door hit me on the way out. gack. This board is a definite social retard magnet and it's been confirmed by an outsider.

It's downright cold here! I think I'm wearing *all* my layers! We had a nice walk out on a long pier through a marsh. Saw some kids and their dad crab fishing. They dumped the crabs out of the bucket, at the end of the pier, and the crabs ran for the edges and dropped back into the marsh! We also walked to the end of the long rock jetty that BnH used to play on as a kid. (tl;dr?)

what was bizarre about rob's post was that he said "... it's the same thing EVERY SINGLE DAY". I thought maybe he didn't realize that he repeated himself constantly because he was drunk all the time, but it looks like he just doesn't realize that he's the one posting the same things - there are quite a few different topics among everybody else.

nice photo, randi

I received my new microwave/combustion oven today to replace the one that died last week. I ordered a newer model that I thought was slightly taller than the old one, but it's a little wider and deeper, also. Barely fit but am thrilled to have it. Have had to use oven and cooktop for several days and am so used to doing almost everything in the microwave or convection part of the countertop unit that it's been a learning curve using the regular oven. I was into my 50's before I even bought a microwave because I always said I could do anything I needed to on a range but I'm totally addicted to it and use it several times a day. I know I'm a broken record on this issue, but it (the convection oven part) really does beat a regular oven in convenience and energy use, and it doesn't heat up the room as much.

more than you ever wanted to know about my appliances, but I'm so excited to have it, I just had to share
July 25, 2013 9:06 PM - BoerumHillScott

I liked the what. I didn't like the shit he said to other people I like.

We had some fun time on the beach. Everyone (legion included) would just post cool music videos. The what shared some coherent insight to where he was coming from - which I felt

He would get pretty nasty with montrose tho. And went off on a pretty racist rant that pretty much turned me off to the beach - hope he's doing well though
July 25, 2013 9:18 PM - Deleted
Yeah the what said some creepy shit to LP. He seemed pretty paranoid about people "outing" him - citing fame from the ny mag "ex-poh~zay" on him that no one remembered anymore.

LP Invited him to her shindig - and he took that as some elaborate ploy to out him - and her threatened to come to her store one day.

The beach got beyond vulgar. My virgin eyes/ears were assaulted.

July 25, 2013 9:30 PM - Partridge
It was stoopid. Was just saying to him to come, it'll be fun, I'll buy you a vegan club soda, yadiyada.

Then CGar led him to believe there WAS A PLOT! Non-denial denials and so forth. Whack-a-doodle shit.
July 25, 2013 9:30 PM - pepper
I'm still curious why he disappeared completely... even after the LP "outing" incident, he came back eventually, and reopened the Beach... But then, one day, seemingly for no reason, he just disappeared completely...
July 25, 2013 9:33 PM - Partridge
No, DH. Wasn't there for 1.0. Heard on OT only. Jack Slade visited 2.0.
July 25, 2013 9:34 PM - BoerumHillScott
He left, came back, asked me to delete his account, asked me to reactivate his account, came back, left, came back, and finally asked me to delete his account.

I could not handle much of the beach.
July 25, 2013 9:36 PM - Partridge

I think six knew (and knows) better than to make it public. Ask him, next time you see him. He told me in person on his birthday eve... somehow, group hugs and The What go together, though I'm not sure why. I only ever experienced him in my lurking days... :o(

If Eva is still around, I had a thought about the lost things. That would really really piss me off and knowing myself, I would wind up obsessing about it and hounding the hospital staff till I got the stuff (and they thoroughly hated me). Can you delegate that pitbull role to someone else (daughter??) to follow up with the hospital? Or to leave it up to the hospital ombudsman? It seems to me like that is too much for have to be on top of the hospital housekeeping and track down who was on duty when the stuff got lost. You have enough to worry about about Juan's health. It would be nice to have someone else fighting that battle on your behalf. Just a thought.

Yeah, dh, we bonded after a while. And Part, that tailor is gone now. I wonder if he just didn't have the business to maintain the store. Probably the building owner realized the economic value of that space.

Scott, I had such a wonderful time in Washington in the spring. It was a fantastic little weekend trip. I didn't do too much -- went to the Phillips collection and then the next day went to the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Portrait Gallery (which are connected). I heard an art historian give a great lecture which pulled together a lot of things for me on American History and American Art History. I really had a blast. Other times I have gone to Washington as a tourist I went to other Smithsonian museums - the Sackler, the American History Museum and the Air and Space. Also, I love the Hirschorn and the National Gallery. I could definitely live in Washington too. If I could get used to the company town claustrophobia they say you get from living in a place where everyone works for the government.

Well. it does have a bit of a theme park feel. which I attribute to everyone being from somewhere else, flown in to work for the government.

BnH's grandparents lived there/Williamstown for a time. I've only been up there once, and that was many moons ago.

Scott - you've probably already made reservations, but this is where I stay - it's the most charming little inn and has a great restaurant (or used to - haven't been in a while)

It was pretty nippy here today, and raining just a few minutes ago. I hope it's sunny in Western MA and Troy.

Will do, stoops!

Thanks, I know I've skimped on the pics a bit. I'll try to post more during the drive tomorrow. DIBS will make fun of me, but a lot of this trip is personal to me and BnH, and I won't post pics of us.

Cobble, if you read this, it was an absolutely gorgeous day today, like late spring. Loved it. I threw open the windows and let all of last week's heat out of the house. Hopefully tomorrow is the same.

Stoops, we'll definitely do that soon!
