Today is the 68th anniversary of the landing at Normandy, otherwise known as D-Day.

Almost equally as important, voters in Wisconsin struck a blow to unions. The rest of the country needs to wake up.

I can't say I am disappointed by the Wisconsin results.

I have two sites on this server, and both are pretty much constantly being probed and used by spammers and hackers, with a big ramp up in recent weeks.
I have not had the time to really look into it, but in general there are no easy or good solutions other than shutting down the ability for new users to register.

Spammers are the new unions. They are bad for society, bad for progress and bad for the country. Plus, they seem like losers.

Nanny Bloomberg has nothing on California where the foie gras ban goes into effect on July 1.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/06/dining/california-chefs-mount-a-repeal-of-foie-gras-ban-set-for-july-1.html

Shouldn't that state be focused on other things like the fact that it's almost bankrupt????? How about banning collective bargaining as it relates to pension and health care costs??????

So the comment I was going to make about Facebook was that when I was with Martin's brother, who works at a large law firm here in NYC, he said that the large firms were salivating at the thought of the FB IPO and all that money and just looking for any crack in the door to launch massive suits against them, just because they will have the money.

Glad to see I'm not the only one having issues getting onto the site this AM. I thought maybe I missed something last night and you guys imploded. I got nervous, was ready to E:Mail CGar, lol.

So today's is my baby's 19th birthday. Dusted off the debit card, and away we go in about an hour. This is the first time, "I" feel old on her birthday. I guess this is my future now, feeling old based on her age.

Have a great day, I'll probably be able to check back around 4 (in case any of you are missing me).

Partridge, my daughter and were also in awe of the sky last night. It was beautiful. No Venus for us either. I was watching NASA's live stream for about 2 minutes, but, I could have been looking at a still shot for all I knew. Obviously, I wasn't going to see any motion.

OK, later folks.

"Their spiritual leader was a charismatic Princeton-educated monk whom some have accused of running the retreat as a cult. . . .

The retreat — in which adherents communicate only with pen and paper — was designed to allow participants to employ yoga and deep meditation to try to answer some of life’s most profound questions."

Love Myers! (And, fyi, Keswick is pronounced Kezzick.) I used to drink w/ the owner who hung out at the Lion's Head. He's from PB-country. They make their own bangers which are truly excellent. Nowadays a lot of shops sell UK inventory - Heinz Baked Beans, Bird's Custard, etc. & Chip Shop does Scotch Eggs. But Myers has Irn Bru - a soda pop that's a good hangover cure. Many kinds of Brit chox. Fairy Liquid (a friend of mine won't use anything else.) Brit bacon & butter. Depends on what your pal likes. (I'd go for the bangers [nh].)

GM, all:

The irony for me about the Wisconsin vote is that, before Walker introduced the budget bill that took away most collective bargaining rights, the public unions in Wisconsin had agreed to everything Walker wanted from them in the budget. that is, in Wisconsin at least, collective bargaining worked and it worked to the fiscal advantage of the state in the form of wage cuts and changes in health and pension contributions. The unions gave back, despite what everyone says about that never happening. The budget bill was a superfluous attack on union power because there was nothing Walker wanted from them that they didn't already agree to in terms of savings.

The second irony is that, despite tens of millions spent convincing Wisconsin voters what a great job Walker's done for the local economy, Wisconsin's performance on employment compared with the US as a whole has been comparatively sluggish since Walker took office. http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/24/in-wisconsin-walker-is-likely-to-survive-recall/ (see charts near the end of the article). Of course, Wisconsin was in better shape than US average before Walker took office, but it is hard to see Walker's value added.

I agree with Slopey's take on Wisconsin. Furthermore, I will share the following anecdotes from my relatives in Wisconsin:

- voting for Walker because Barrett will raise our taxes
- voting for the Republican Senate candidate in the local recall election because the Democrat is twice-divorced
- intending to vote for Romney in the fall because all these people are on entitlements and it's such a problem, and Obama cut our Medicare and Social Security

Voters don't act in ways that conform to the mass media narrative.

"And yet Walker won the recall by a larger majority than he won the first election!!!!!"

Sixty million dollars can't be wrong.

BTW, that same electorate is giving Obama a 12 point lead in WI at present. Definitely some discomfort among swing voters in using the recall mechanism here. Polls have picked that up as a factor in the outcome. Last I heard, senate control was still unresolved, with four senators also facing recall elections yesterday.

"I have two sites on this server, and both are pretty much constantly being probed and used by spammers and hackers, with a big ramp up in recent weeks."

SCOTT! I phoned someone with a web site who I thought might know the answer to this. I got a different answer than I expected. He said his web site is hosted on a Yahoo server, so Yahoo has to deal with these problems. He said he has a small business account with Yahoo, and anyone can have one of these. He said there are a bunch of others (than Yahoo) that host web sites, such as godaddy, and didn't mention the others. Maybe you know what they are.

As usual, I don't really know what all of these things mean so I just pass this on to you by rote. Let us not have field day with the mention of godaddy on this site- haha

They'll be fussing over their hair and nails and everything will be high drama like they're getting ready for the queen's coronation!

And you being gay, they'll think you're perfect to get advice from. Those poor fucking bridesmaids, having you critique their hair and fashions HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHA. They'll have you draped in tulle and rhinestones before the day is out!
June 6, 2012 2:44 PM - kazootite

It's not the same format, and you wouldn't be hosting it, they would but it's really stable, cheap (free, if you dont mind ads) and easy to set up and administer. Also, they don't censor language at all, the individual admins set the filter parameters, so you can easily filter out such terms as 'moonface' and 'crotchfruit', hahaha. Well. I got an update from the Wisconsin battlefield. I always forget how costly dem strategic and tactical mistakes can be:

1. Had they submitted the petitions sooner, colleges would have still been in session when the vote took place. Much bigger votes at UW and other colleges, more volunteers, etc.

2. Barrett, who is mayor of Milwaukee, did not make sure there were enough ballots for the turnout he needed in Milwaukee to win. So there were people standing on line to vote for him who arrived by closing but there were no more ballots.

Ugh, it's like rooting for the fucking Cubs, sometimes.

On flip side, dems took at least one senate seat through recall, so I think Wisconsin Senate is in democratic control, now, although fall district lines were already drawn by GOP, so GOP may get senate back through gerrymandering. So far, recall votes on 10 of 19 senate seats and dems took at least 3 of them.

The Senate majority leader, Dean G. “Being able to just walk around with 10 joints in each ear, and it only be a violation, I think that’s wrong,” Senator Skelos, pointing to his ears, told reporters.

Did a bit of cleaning up behind the scenes. As I thought, there is a lot of resources are used by spammers, largely on the other major site I host on the same server. I've already stopped new user registration there (the site is mostly dead anyway), and I have started to delete the accounts most associated with spam.

I have not yet decided to shut down user registration here, but I am seriously considering it, given the dozens of new spam accounts that sign up every day. If I do that, new accounts would have to be created manually by site admins (currently me and cgar)

Regarding The What's advice, the only other reference I found was one on the first day to a memory setting that I had already taken care of via an alternate method before that post was made.

For those curious about what we have behind the scenes, this site is run on a Virtual Private Server hosted by a company called VPSLink. I control the operating system Debian Linux), have dedicated memory and disk, but share processor power and I/O with other clients running on the same harder.
Running on same virtual server is another complex but mostly dead social website, along with several personal/playing sites of mine.

Regarding money, this site's share of the service will come out to around $190 next year, payable at the end of July. Between excess money already collected and a couple of generous donations (one very generous) today, I have close to that amount already.

I had a very disturbing day today. I went to my wife's aunt's house in Queens, and discovered a very dire situation. She is a major hoarder, and I mean MAJOR. Her house is literally waist-deep in garbage. I need to call some city agencies tomorrow to find out what can be done.

My wife's aunt and uncle never let anyone into their house, in all the time I've known them (about 34 years). We always knew that they were packrats, but I never had any idea it was so bad. The uncle passed away last month, and my wife's aunt is falling apart: dis-oriented, overwhelmed and under-nourished. We brought some food today, and she refused to let us in the house. When I told her that I have to bring it in, she let me into the vestibule off the kitchen. I could see her kitchen and some other parts, and as I said, it was waist-deep in garbage and clutter, with NO paths or clearance. I don't know how she is able to live. She can't access her refrigerator or other appliances -it's blocked with garbage.

This is a tragedy. The aunt and uncle were both bright people and went to college (at a time when very few people from their background did so) but they never had a lick of practical common sense. They were also miserly, even though they both had good jobs and no kids. My wife is beside herself tonight after seeing this situation. I'm not sure what we can do, because her aunt refuses help. We begged her today to hire an aide, and to go to the doctor. She refused. From what I have heard, it is a long and arduous proceeding to have someone declared incompetent.

BENSON! THAT SUCKS! Seriously :( Ever see the show on A&E Hoarders? It's one of those issues that cuts across EVERY demographic. VERY difficult to deal with. Here's the thing you, you have to be VERY up front about it if you care about the person. And get shit done more than they will LET you do. Within legal limits of course. Very sad. I've seen a hoarder or two over the years, nothing near as bad as some people, when it gets to the kitchen and bathroom and sanitary conditions it's a MAJOR problem. This is why twice a year I force myself to get rid of shit I don't need. It's not one of those things you are BORN with. It's a REAL psychological issue. Many people can fall prone to it. I bet otherwise they are very normal people, your family members benson, which is probably why you didn't suspect it. It does affect the elderly a LOT more than the young for obvious reasons. There's a ton of resources you can find that will help get rid of the junk, just do it... Believe it or not, a lot of hoarders DON'T start hoarding again once all the junk is cleared out and they are in a different environment. Get rid of the junk and into a small apartment somewhere. It's not like a lot of other psychological issues.

Benson,

You go back tomorrow or the next and you call 911. Tell them she is malnourished and refusing your help.

I had a different but similar situation with my grandmother several years back. Forget having her declared incompetent for the moment. The situation is an emergency. They will take her to Coney Island Hospital or wherever and have her checked out. A social worker will be assigned and you can get much better assistance for her from inside a hospital than from her home.

That is horrible, Benson. My heart goes out to you and your wife. Maybe Legion can give you some advice on getting her admitted to the hospital. Would a 911 call on her behalf be cruel/illegal? I would think under those circumstances you could get her admitted for a few days. Good luck.

Rob;

Correct on both points. And you are also correct that it is something that forms over time. It is for this reason that I am scrupulous about throwing out stuff I don't use. Screw the landfill issue. Order and cleanliness in one's house is more important.

Um, hospitals aren't going to take in hoarders. SERIOUSLY. this is not that kind of issue. Were they brought up or born in the great depression? MANY people these days ARE most of the current hoarders btw. People born in the 50 and 60s throw out EVERYTHING two seconds after they got it. I dont know about the 70s and 80s yet. I was born in the late 70s and I'm kinda neither hoardey or throw-out-ey... actually moreso just flat out chary of everything I own.

Can you go with "health hazard" Benson? The aunt may be unable to help herself, or help you with her stuff when she is in such grief (husband dying a month ago). Sounds like the hoarding has been going on for at least 34 years. Good luck to you and your wife, Benson.

Rob;

Correct again. Both were raised in dire poverty during the Depression, and never got over the "Depression mentality", as my family used to call it.

As Kazoo-tite suggested, I think the authorities can act based upon the immediate health hazard.

One thing I've learned from my experiences of the past few years: one should plan ahead to deal with old age. For instance, my wife's aunt and uncle live in a neighborhood (Floral Park) that is completely inappropriate for senior citizens. It is a suburban neighborhood, and there are only a couple of stores to which they can walk.

I dont want to toot my own horn, but I will. TOOT! there are some issues that humans have that are not brain and chemical oriented, much like big pharmacy would like you to believe. While we HAVE come so far treated many diseases, we seem to lean more and more as humans to believe that there is something wrong with our physical brain and chemistry. that is NOT that case. I hope the best for you benson. Treat the human issue first before the psychological issue and then LAST any kind of chemical issue. Get them out of the hoarding situation and start from there. If they are that old, there's not that much they can hoard anymore, timewise or strengthwise. do NOT go thru their shit and ask them piece by piece if certain things are important. Throw as much as you can out, they will NEVER know at this point. Obviously don't throw out pictures and real momentos (im sure you can tell the difference tho). It's not like they are gonna disown you for throwing out shit they don't even remember they have. If they were TRULY psychotic and had mental issues they WOULD know everything that you throw out, but trust me, they won't.

I will co-sign that with a Kiss to the Universe. My grandmother somehow managed to wind up very lucky in a great development down in south carolina with people who take care of each other (well her more than them) and a GREAT I cant thank her ENOUGH baby momma of her son who LOVES her and accepts her eccentricities. Of course my grandmother accepts baby momma's slightly ghetto ways, but it's all good. It works out. It's sad when people get old and they truly don't have anyone. Dr. Steve on the WB (or CW) morning news did say one time tho that old people who have people tend to live longer and people who really don't have anyone in their lives tend to die MUCH ealier in their 40s thru 60 versus 60s thru 80s, which totally makes sense. If you have people in your life duh you want to live as long as possible, if you don't, then life really IS burdensome and not worth it I guess? I don't know, I don't want to live to 80, and I sure as hell won't be having anyone around to wipe my ass at that age, but as long as you can still babble as much as you want and other people hear/read it, then I guess all is good and you will stay healthy. But then again i'm still only 35 and who knows what the future holds, I could still wind up having a family. Hells half the women who live on my block at almost 70 and have 2 year olds! (most of them are twins tho. that's just way creepy). I'm gonna be flat out honest, if I had a twin, i'd kill it.

Rob, I am sure she didn't want to laugh at you. I was reading when she helped you. Get a good sleep and things will look better in the morning. You will have great adventures out of this. I have to fly on a "tiny little plane", from SF to my city. They are okay. You will probably make the connection. I had one hour once and made the connection just fine. If missed, it will be another adventure, more people to meet, and something to tell about. Travel can be stressful and it sounds as if you are feeling it now. I wish you had a travel companion. I usually have a friend to talk me through it, even right before take-off. I forget how to pack this or that. Please consider looking at the Rick Steves web sites about what and how to pack. I gave my friend's son the book, Europe Through the Back Door, when he made his first trip. He told me later that he was the only one of travel group who was prepared and the others didn't know what they were doing and took the wrong things. But you are just going in the U.S., so you will be fine. I wasn't alone on my first flight, and had someone else to take care of the details.

Um, Im going to CALIFORNIA, not france. If I was going to france i wouldnt be worried about packing shit like deordorant. If I was going to france I probably wouldn't even be worried about when to shower (the night before or in the morning before the flight) because people in France barely shower. That's my point. Rob, that is what I wrote, that you are traveling in the US. My point was that Rick Steves will also have advice of what to pack to San Diego. Is Snappy taking you shopping? I picture you wearing something like a light cotton shirt and cotton dress pants to a wedding. I really don't know what guys wear in general tho, and can't quite decipher their styles. It sounds as if Snappy knows. I admit I have not been to SD, but most of ca is very laid back. You will be fine, but I agree it is nerve-wracking (sp?). As soon as you get off the plane in SD, you will see what people are wearing, then you will relax much.

"I'm going to a VERY high maintenance place". Probably not so much so.

A little late to the convo, but wanted to throw this in about hoarders: almost without fail their hoarding is triggered by a single or series of devastating events (my kid's godmother is a hoarder and hers started after her 29 year old son died unexpectedly, and then really ramped up when she was forced to retire from her 35 year career as an in-house daycare provider. she misses those sweet babies so much). You can't just go in and throw all their stuff out. They have to process the trauma and throwing out their stuff makes them chary of any help, on top of adding to their trauma of feeling betrayed which triggers a bunch of really bad events including super-hoarding and agoraphobia and all kinds of stress induced disabilities.

Likely the authorities will condemn the house until it's either cleaned up or razed. You may want to make sure that she has the resources to live outside the home for some period of time while the hoard is cleared, and make sure you or some other family member is with her in the event there is something she just has to have...you can assure you that you'll make sure her belonging will be untouched for the short term, and possibly retrieve something that truly is valuable to her coping, like her favorite picture of her husband or her jewelry box.

My heart goes out to your family, because this is a challenging situation, but you can help her and at the same time assuage your guilt by being mindful of her needs. Good luck.

Have completely exceeded capacity for incremental thought. Home 2 am last night. Today's meetings just endings, now the workday begins. Getting diminishing returns from coffee.
