serious question... what do the SAT 2's do? I guess they look good on college admissions? You pay money to take those tests, right? Im just curious because the SAT II's were never brought up in high school and I WOULD have paid to take them just to take them. I've been doing research on my high school lately and even talking to people who also went there on facebook it's so strange how not a single AP course was offered (I think they do now...). Who is behind all the AP stuff tho? mega companies profiting mad off it. AP classes offered these days nothing more than glorified honors classes that teach to the test. I looked at what AP courses exist and one was AP Psychology. Really!? I took Psychology senior year of high school as an elective and then majored in it in college. Took psych 101 my first semester. If I took an AP exam in psychology I would not have had to take psych 101. I guess? is that how the system works? It was such a dumb choice for a major anyway, that by junior year I was like oh fuck this psychology bullshit and picked up Art (LOL) as a second major. Art has done well for me. I get pissy when I see people tell people not to major in what they want to major in because of the economy. You have no idea what the world is going to be like in 4 years and also, really, I see more people get hired all the time with Art degrees and other supposedly fluff degrees than people in STEM. STEM is mad difficult, pushing people into that is absurd. People like to talk about the 1 percent versus the 99 percent, but the same is true for peoples' brains and what they can handle. Sorry, you're average kid, even if he or she was brought up in an upper middle class lifestyle CAN NOT handle advanced math and science. You get to a point where it just cannot be learned by practice. You either have it or you don't. I saw it in my statistics class for psych majors in college. omg. it was hard, but at the same time it was easy. But most people were just a giant fail at it. I took notes for an off campus note taking service for that class and was really into it, got an A, but I know for a fact that I can't handle anything beyond Calulus I.

I will say this... to anyone with kids... In regular classes I find that the teachers really do teach to to the middle half of the kids. Ignore the top half cuz the subject matter is so easy (which isnt a bad thing!!! who the fuck wants to be studying all day for ONE class!? that's why i hated that one history honors class I had, i was oh fuck this shit) and ignore the bottom people who will fail no matter what. It's so strange. I don't think high school kids think about where they place themselves.. While being in honors courses is nice, it also bring a certain kind of competition that some people find barfy. I found it barfy back then, as I do now with real life. I'd rather be around regular people who don't try so hard, not that I mean I don't want to be around people that try their best: there IS a difference.

A big eye opener for my was my SAT scores
400 something in verbal (oof)
600 (LOW) in math

that was when it was based on the score of just 1600.

Don't get me started about about my GRE scores. Math was good. the analytical section. omfg. WAY bottom percentile. It was then I realised I was not as smart as I thought I was. If you've never taken then GRE's take some practise examples online for the the analytical it will MAKE YOUR BRAIN HURT! I wasn't sure what the fuck they were testing with that part, life just aint like that.

of course I took the GRE's in my halloween costume from the night before. Why the fuck would they scedule the GRE's the early morning after Halloween? Well they did that year. I remember being in a classroom full of people who were all professional looking taking the GRE's (there were some sorority girl scrubs, but at least their sweat pants were nice looking). I was dressed full on from the night before as a devil bunny. Sippped a bit of coffee from someone's coffee and then was like oh just TAKE this test lol. Errrrr. this is what happened.

The more money you give away for college, the costlier it will get.

The longer you extend unemployment benefits, the longer people will stay out of work.

I actually consider Park Slope a tad ghetto. what does that say about your economic theory? It's expensive and ghetto at the same time. Of course it's sort of a white people ghetto, but still. There are days where I want out of living in this ghetto. But then I look at my dog and im like GRRRRR you mongrel! We can do better, but with people in the 1 percent (i know that is so chiche) how we get there is difficult, but believe me, we will.

Only one day after former Senator John Edwards escaped conviction in federal court on six corruption charges, Rielle Hunter announced some news of her own: she has written a memoir.

BenBella Books, a boutique publisher, said on Friday that it would publish a book later this month by Ms. Hunter, the woman with whom Mr. Edwards had an extramarital affair. The book is titled “What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter and Me.”

Here is a serious question, but may or may not be rhetorical:
Do you peeps ever talk by phone? I mean if there is a misunderstanding and feelings get frazzled, do you ever pick up the phone and explain or clarify things "in person"? Or, does "everything" play out in public on the OT? Are these strictly internet verbal relationships? I mean, I know you get together once in awhile, but beyond that no phone calls, etc?
(okay, i gather that a few of you are close friends and spend time together, but the others who fight, why not discuss it in person? Again that can be a rhetorical question.) I realize I'm not explaining this well.

I refuse to do FB or twitter.

kazoo, seriously, you can not pay any attention to anything *rob* says. Most everyone here knows each other well enough to have each other's real names, addresses, phone numbers, real email addresses, you name it. We meet at bars and restaurants, and we go to each other's homes. There's probably more off the OT contact than on at this point. And, yes, we often get together to hash things out when it's called for. And many of us help each other out all the time in myriad ways.

i dont like how you worded that and I must add for clarification... I did not spray paint that shit on my building. I stupidly left my spraypaint outside for a few hours while I was inside taking a break from spray painting sticks.
Snappy and Arkady erasing that off my building while I was at work was the nicest thing anyone did for me because I totally thought I was going to get blamed for it since everyone saw me all day outside with the silver spray paint. The "interverntion" however, was completely uncalled for. and thank god no one one was around the building to see that.

"CGar, when I get to NY, I know where to find you (Montero)"

Rob, CGar and I discussed this last week on OT when he was ill. He said people there know him by CGar, and we can ask for him by that name. Other people here chimed in and said, yes, everyone there knows his online names and his offline name. I would not go there without informing him first. It would be too far out of my way. People here have said Montero is about a mile from the subway stops either way. That distance would not be my favorite trip. CGar said he lives about 100 ft. from there and to let him know before arrival.

Later, I was thinking I'd rather meet someone at a place I already go that is easy for me.

There is such a high degree of fear in the financial markets that I can only conclude that stocks will be much higher by year end.
Europe still has plenty of options, but they will probably continue to play high stakes brinksmanship and create a lot of drama. All of which, along with the miserable employment picture in the US, will get the Federal Reserve to create some sort of fiscal stimulus. That will also cause the stock market to rise.
And the upcoming presidential election, with the promise of some kind of political clarity will also be a bullish factor.
For the moment, fear rules. Soon the pendulum will swing back the other way. (sorry, Mr What. Enjoy it while you can cause your days are numbered)

Rob, why the change of heart about the wedding, and what happened to staying with Manda's mom?

Mexico can be dangerous is some parts, just like in the US. I'm leaving in a week or so for 2 weeks, hope I don't get murderlized!! I wouldn't suggest you go alone Rob. I dont know if they're particularly gay-friendly in places near the border. Not hating on Mexico, but it's important when traveling to understand cultural biases that might harm you. You are not familiar with the country or the locales you might find yourself. You need to be careful about aimless wandering (which I totally love to do!) but it would be easy to get yourself in trouble. And if you don't know the language, you can be totally fucked (and not in a good way). I'm actually going to be on the east Baja coast, which is pretty tourist-friendly (ugh, hate that word....foreign visitor friendly), and will be going with family so I should be ok.

Oh, and just because Rob doesn't drive, that doesn't mean he can't live in California if he wants to (not that I think he actually would). I've never driven a car in my life, don't have a driver's license, and I managed to do what I need to, mostly by walking. California has many beautiful 'walking' towns, and with our generally temperate weather, it's physically comfortable to walk all year 'round.

Return of You Know Who: "There is such a high degree of fear in the financial markets that I can only conclude that stocks will be much higher by year end."

You have displaced Dave as Number One Jackass!

Europe still has plenty of options, but they will probably continue to play high stakes brinksmanship and create a lot of drama. All of which, along with the miserable employment picture in the US, will get the Federal Reserve to create some sort of fiscal stimulus. That will also cause the stock market to rise.

Right.....

"And the upcoming presidential election, with the promise of some kind of political clarity will also be a bullish factor."

Yesterday's walking route and highlights:
1) Breakfast and coffee at Ashbox, Brooklyn's northernmost cafe. It's a half-block from Newtown Creek on Manhattan Ave. Very quiet and almost by definition at that location nobody is in a hurry. They usually have classical or quiet jazz playing in the background.
2) Greenpoint - down Manhattan Ave, right on India, left on Franklin, left on Oak (the corner of Oak and Guernsey is a nice hidden oasis) - then down Guernsey Street to McCarren Park. Guernsey btwn Meserole and Norman is one of my favorite blocks in Brooklyn.
3) Williamsburg - from McCarren Park, down Driggs, left on N 8th w/ DIBS-style mural of young buff Asian man, left on Bedford where we ran into a former student of mine, and then we continued on Bedford for a loooooong way.
4) Hasidic Williamsburg - where my scantily-clad Italian female co-walker caused lots of men to avert their eyes. She did take lots of good pictures of people when they weren't looking though. It's great to see that kids in Hasidic areas are still allowed to roam freely.
5) Clinton Hill and Prospect Heights - right on DeKalb, left on Clinton, following rf's advice down Clinton, Waverly, and Washington. Met up with another fellow student at Clinton and Gates and proceeded down Washington to Islands Restaurant. Had an awesome jerk chicken lunch for take-out and ate on steps of Brooklyn Museum.
6) Prospect Park - Long Meadow, Ravine, Nethermeade, Lullwater, the lake, and Parade Grounds.
[interlude - saw a guy hit a woman in broad daylight at 55 Parade Place and called 911. Seemed to be a domestic dispute of some sort. Other bystanders failed to separate them but calmed them down enough to stop beating each other. 911 is useless, I found - dispatcher asked stupid questions and couldn't locate me (ie her *last* question: which borough are you in?) after I had given address and cross streets.
7) Prospect Park South and Ditmas Park - Buckingham, Albemarle, Rugby, Cortelyou, Stratford, Dorchester, then cross CI Ave. for break at my apt. on E 7th.
8) Kensington & Borough Park - walk west on Ditmas, crossing McDonald to 40th Street. We didn't know if it was going to rain or not, so we opted to cut down Ft Hamilton Parkway, contra Partridge's advice. Stopped at White Castle to go to bathroom - workers are all immigrants and can barely communicate with each other. There's an impressive monastery a little further down at 53rd and Fort Hamilton, and then the equally impressive Circus Fruits at 59th.
9) Sunset Park Chinatown - we turned off Ft. Hamilton on 60th St. and were the only non-Chinese for blocks, it seemed.
10) Bay Ridge - turned left onto 5th at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church (thanks Partridge!) and got to hear the school talent show wafting out of the auditorium. Went down 5th and then cut over to 4th, passing my favorite hookah place at 69th and 4th, and then cutting across to 3rd. Walked down 3rd to pass by Salty Dog. One of my fellow walkers was Italian and genuinely appalled at the poor Italian grammar in signage and business names. Zigzagged through the 80s to the Gingerbread House which really impressed my friends.
11) The End - Skies finally opened up on us right in front of Ft. Hamilton HS. We were drenched and my friend was worried about her camera in the water, so we decided to head back up to 3rd Ave and get umbrellas...of course by the time we were there the rain stopped. Then we marched on down to 3rd & Shore Road; it was dark by that point and this seemed so long - 95, 96, 97... When we finally made it to the end we took pictures of the Verrazano. We saw 101 Restaurant on our way back to the 95th St. R station but were still stuffed with Jamaican food and not in presentable condition. Next time!

Google Maps claims this is 16.9 miles total, which would have given us a pace of just over 2 mph. I think we were going faster than that and probably walked more like 19-20 miles.

Fort Hamilton HS - every school ought to look this impressive. This was taken just a minute before the rain hit. On the other side, down from the gingerbread house, there's an entrance signed "Natatorium," which I learned means a building containing a swimming pool.

Incidentally Six, the Nordic Deli that you posted is next door to the most wonderful mid-east delicacy store -- The Family Store. They are Palestinian. A true family business. Mom and Pop ran it for years and now the son Sam is doing an amazing job with Mom Minerva still in the kitchen. Great people and the best food. [Edited. The play was excellent...very moving. Although i liked brian Dennehy better, I think Hoffman was good because he came off as a wimpier, more trasgic Willie Loman but Biff dominated the play.

Riddle me this? What would possess an otherwise intelligent person to leave a voicemail message only to say, "I'm returning your call"?? IT'S ON THE CALL LOG!!! I KNOW you're returning my call. Then I'm forced to check my voicemail to see if the message is "substantive" (it wasn't), which is a longer process than a 12-step program. And I really, really can't be asked to check voicemail. Only thing worse are the CVS robocalls reminding you to pick up your prescriptions . . .

I don't buy my food from fauxdegas or bodegas, but people like to pretend that bodegas rip people off. um, i dont think so, it's the fauxdegas that are crazy expensive. Just because you sweep the floor and put out a bunch of fresh flowers doesnt mean you can over charge people x 5. Plus fauxdegas don't stock 40 ounces, just moonface beers. wtf is up with that!?!? The dude who works the overnight shift at the fauxdega across the street had a black eye a few weeks ago. Krazey wound up getting the story out of him of what really happened because they both spoke spanish. When I asked him what happened to his eye he told me he fell :-/ i think someone got mad at their prices and took it out on him to be honest.

Korean grocers and bodegas are both ripoffs, they just sell different items.

duane reade isnt the cheapest for smokes, DH. maybe it depends on the brand. Newports are the cheapest around here where i go and it's 11.50. duane reade DID have a sale for a while on them for 11.25. but then they charge tax!? im seriously pondering debating kicking the habit of smoking, but im afraid ill get super fat, fatter than i already am. ugh. someone told me crystal meth is cheaper than cigs tho and you can lose a TON of weight, or at least not GAIN weight while you are kicking the smoking habit and you can get a ton of shit done on meth that you normally can't be asked to do.

it would be a stop gap solution btw, not a long term addiction. After college I was in a funk and a friend at the time gave me her boyfriend's dexedrine pills. Um, okay, so I started taking them and WHAM. Found a job, Found an apartment in nyc, and found a boyfriend! I think things like speed are very good for short periods of time for certain people. Owing to the proverbial "prior obligation in Tajikistan," I won't be at your going-away party. Nevertheless my parting gift is a recommendation to read "House of Stone" by Anthony Shadid, which I just finished. Shadid was the NYT journalist who died on assignment in Syria, but the book is about restoring the home his great-grandfather built in Marjayoun, Lebanon. So you've got restoration of a historic house interspersed with family, community, and world history. All in all, a great read.

Get OUT Of The Futures Markets
http://market-ticker.org/akcs-www?post=206796

It's happening again and if you get reamed don't say you weren't warned.

In 2008 there were repeated instances where the futures gapped ~20 handles overnight, clearing out the stack and gapping over your stop, filling you on the other side for hideous losses. Stop orders are worthless when this happens -- all they do is lock in a loss as you fill on the other side (which usually is the extreme print) and then the market reverses some of the move, costing you twice.

There's no defense against this when the other side of the trade is a robot. The only defense is not to be involved at all.

A good while ago I did a video on HFT games in the stack -- orders repeatedly appearing and disappearing with no chance for you to possibly act against them. These orders are not intended to execute, but rather are intended to "bait" some other robot to go against them and then they're pulled.

It's a cat and mouse game, basically, and you have no chance as a human against them.

They're back in the stack this evening.

GET OUT.

DO NOT PARTICIPATE.

YOU WILL LOSE MONEY, MAYBE YOUR ENTIRE ACCOUNT OR WORSE. IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW WHICH WAY THE MARKET WILL GAP YOU'RE GUESSING AND IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU'RE RIGHT OR WRONG ONCE OR TWICE -- YOU WILL EVENTUALLY BE WRONG RESULTING IN A DISASTROUS WIPE-OUT.

This crap was prevalent during the 08/09 meltdown and it's back. There has been exactly nothing done about it since the meltdown and it is how small retail traders get their entire account wiped out.

Go play golf or fish instead -- you know how much that round of golf or fishing trip is going to cost you in advance.

Rob, single women like having a date at a wedding. You're leaving her hanging if you don't go. I brought a friend to a wedding in SD and he ended up leaving early with some other chick. I didn't like him like that, but I invited him to help me in those awkward single moments - like slow dances. Sounds retarded, I know, but a single bridesmaid is a vulnerable creature.
June 3, 2012 8:58 PM - lechacal
No need to boil and filter anything. There are plenty of little streams that I consider perfectly safe to drink out of.

The video isn't even in my property. My property starts on the left after you go past the beaver dam. 231 acres I think. Lots of old stone walls in the middle of the woods, abandoned revolutionary war-era dwellings (now just cellar holes).... it's nice there.

It's perfectly acceptable that someone like me cannot attend such a thing as a wedding. I thought I could before, but now I cannot. If they have problems with me not being able to attend something like that, then that is their problem, not mine. I don't even KNOW the people getting married, it's so beyond stupid. I don't want to have to spend those hours around a bunch of straight californians. That sounds so gross to me,

Did anyone ever send you this online test called the unintelligence test or something? It says at the beginning that it's going to test how smart you are. Then it starts asking you these unbelievably retarded questions, like "what's 5 times 2?" and "is a rainbow made of solid material?" And the questions don't stop. There is a seemingly infinite supply of them, they just keep coming and coming and they're really easy to answer and you can't stop even though they're completely retarded.

At the end of the test, you are scored based on how quickly you disengaged. The faster you disengage, the higher your score.

You've never been to a wedding so you don't know that you hate them or that they're stupid. Some of them are fun.
If you can't embrace the idea in any other way, think of it as 4 hours of enduring it in exchange for 10 days of free room & board - as well as possibly giving you a modicum of self-respect for keeping a commitment.

Om the other hand, I have also been accused of being a romantic, so I will continue to support and maintain sites like this long after others have abandoned them.

Back up to troy tomorrow again. Packing is no fun- but living with all the boxes is a nightmare. We're staying at the Old Judge Mansion B&B this time. Only a few blocks from us, and a lot less expensive than the hotels- oddly enough. I'm exhausted.

Rob I guarantee that if these people are friends of Mandas they will be a lot more chill. She'd only be friends with cool zany people, right?

What happened that put you in this tailspin?

In other news, I'm feeling kinda left out because I can just buzz over to Partridge's store on my lunch hour :(
