It really should be called "International Kiss a Geek Day" or "International Kiss your favorite Mathmatician Day". I'd kiss mine, but he's in another state. : (
How do you upload a photo from photos in iPad to an email or to here???? I can get the photo to copy from google images into photos but can't move it from photos or browse or upload
I am sure you all saw the opinion piece in the NYT this morning about the guy who is resigning from Goldman Sachs because they don't care about their customers any more.
Curiously, there is already a spoof up on the Daily Mash in which he is Darth Vader resigning from the Death Star.
Obviously, he must be leaving to create his own hedge fund. Duh. This is the way to get clients -- a giant free ad in the NYT about what a moral guy you are.
Interesting factoid about Pi: although it is an irrational number, it can be formulated as a sequence involving rational numbers. As one of my math teachers once said: "This is the paradox of Pi".
Moron. I'm talking about the commands to MOVE it irregardless of how it is save. If its saved in the wrong format then an error message will show up here, jackass.
Google the manual on line. There is an iphone manual on line. I read it in my spare time. BTW, I went to the apple store at Grand Central yesterday and learned quite a bit from a very smart and nice individual named James Taylor. I really like him. I am going to buy an ipad three and that will be my "laptop" for carrying around. I will do "gotomyPC" to get access to my laptop remotely. The guy started to explain another way to get remote access to other PCs but I didn't have the time to stay. He would have demo'd every product in the store and spent hours talking to me if I could have stayed. What a nice guy.
Sup losers. Org announcement yesterday that we officially opened a new office in Russia. Just in case any of you are wondering, I will NOT be going there to work.
I bought Friendly's ice cream on sale last week for 1.99 (I think it's the half gallon tub?). They are smaller these days. What is the size if anyone knows (obvi not a pint)?
I dunno Kens...I stopped buying ice cream a while back. When I buy it, I eat one or two spoonfuls then it sits in the freezer forever and a day. Waste of money and valuable fridge real estate.
GB, the trend in food packaging for the past few years is that the package sizes are smaller while the prices stay the same. They do "clever" things like indent the bottom of the peanut butter jar to decrease the volume it will hold while not making the change noticeable.
wow some of you people are so sheltered that you dont believe people stick their dirty fingers in the ice cream containers in supermarkets for a free taste!?
My first job was east of Soho in 1986-87. We used to go to the Spring Lounge a lot, a dive on Spring & Mulberry. Wall to wall Sinatra pics (and Sinatra on juke box) and an enormous plastic shark over the bar.
what makes you think people wont just open the seal as well? and im sorry but there are ice creams that are not so frozen solid you cant dip your finger in or take a lick. people do it. all the time. especially in park slope
For my retirement "day" on the OT, I want every rob post fact-checked, footnoted and documented with photos before the post is allowed up. I will not, I repeat, NOT fight about 12-year-olds in strollers on my day.
this weekend im going to document the 12 year olds in strollers phenomenon in park slope. thus it will be proven. maybe ill even take pictures of the ice creams in associated.
it's so funny how the truth stings for some people. it's just ice cream and slow children.
m4less, if i have to move, i will probably just stay in the neighborhood. i did a quick search for rooms for rent and there's plenty of rooms for rent that are even cheaper than what im paying now. the psychic part of my brain is thinking that something very catastrophic is going to happen in the next year causing rents to stay stable and perhaps even drop in nyc. all the nutbag landlords in the ghetto need to get their heads out of the sand.
when i say catastrophic thing affecting rent, im thinking more financial or something, not like natural disaster or war or anything. arent there tons of analysts predicting a giant crash in the economy in the next few months?
Rob, go take a look at one of those "room" rentals then get back to us (as Benson would say) - ie if you move, you aint going into one of those "room" but more likely to JC
effing dog owners - next door they keep the dog outside all day which isn't so bad because it is not a dog that barks.
but weather is getting warmer and since they are self-absorbed like all dog owners...don't pick up to poo that often and now weather is getting warmer and getting dog poo mist smell.

oh whatever, dog shit is not as bad as baby shit. in my building people put diapers in the trash, which i guess IS where it's supposed to go, but on warm days the smell definitely wafts and drifts down the whole block.
GS response could have been written by any new PR grad:
"We disagree with the views expressed, which we don't think reflect the way we run our business," said Duvally. "In our view, we will only be successful if our clients are successful. This fundamental truth lies at the heart of how we conduct ourselves."
but I would guess behind the scenes doing everything to discredit the guy. now that story is being picked up.
Reminds me of when we were looking for wedding venues. We looked at a few places with barns in Bucks County. One place was a small B&B with a big, but unrenovated, barn. The owner was a couple -- she was a chef and he had "retired" from Wall Street (but seemed to be about 35-40). He owned a small apt near work and a house in Princeton. He would go in at 6am, leave at 4, drive to Princeton, enjoy the house and the town until about midnight, then drive back to NYC and sleep in his apt so he could roll out of bed to work. Said he had burnt out on WS. Total arbitrage & coke deal, it seemed.
cobble is right. Having worked there, I really don't think most - MOST, NOT ALL - people at GS care. In my experience, the nice, decent, ethical people are forced out through non-promotions, attrition, layoffs. It takes a certain personality type to stay there, let alone succeed. And, even though very few people make MD or partner, it's that same certain personality type that puts in their time to try, however futile, and does whatever it takes.
No, but we were thinking about it. There are several popular barns in Bucks County renovated for that purpose. No, we had an outdoor wedding in the garden of a nice inn.
"cobble is right. Having worked there, I really don't think most - MOST, NOT ALL - people at GS care."
Yep, I have no doubt a (very) few are sitting at their desks, hanging their heads, and wondering how much longer they can take working there or are actively planning their exit strategies for whatever number of years until they can walk away.
sorry, i wasnt trying to be judgemental of wedding choices. im just not a fan of low rent weddings. well im not a fan of weddings in general (never been to one) but if i were to get married i would kinda want it to be elegant. a barn just seems like the opposite of elegant to me.
"What is it about a barn wedding that is just so romantic? It must be the rustic look of the barn that contrasts with the elegance of a wedding, making the romance pop! Wedding planners jobs are made easy when there's a barn to work with."
:-/
oh yeah that just SCREAMS elegant. not! look at all those moonfaces getting pig poop on their penny loafers!
cobble, I worked with a lot of great, nice, ethical, decent people at GS, virtually all of whom are plotting their exit strategies. It's not coincidental in my opinion that these people, by and large, want to leave. But, the bad economy and job market are keeping a lot of them there for lack of anywhere else to go.
OK, no one is having a wedding in a barn full of hay and animals. They are barns that are no longer in farm use, converted for use as a party space. It's not that they clean them out for the wedding and then bring the animals back after.
I am officially burnt out on Wall Street and my career working for financial institutions is over. I have had it. The new Dodd Frank regs and MF Global are making the brokerage business and banks a nightmare. I can't talk about Goldman Sachs culture, but any bank/ investment bank that trades around customer positions has a predatory approach to clients. It is a game -- to schmooze and flatter clients but use their needs and transactions as the basis of predatory proprietary trading strategies. The alternative for clients is to get more sophisticated and really learn about the markets to figure out some of these stategies on their own or to use GS to their advantage.
" I worked with a lot of great, nice, ethical, decent people at GS, virtually all of whom are plotting their exit strategies. It's not coincidental in my opinion that these people, by and large, want to leave. But, the bad economy and job market are keeping a lot of them there for lack of anywhere else to go."
Yes, I'm quite sure. One of my oldest friends, from childhood, got out a couple years before the crash. I'm dying to talk to him about this. I bet he won't even *try* to defend GS.
The latest gem from Sarah Palin, as told to Sean Hannity on Fox News: (Talking about Obama)
"What we can glean from this is an understanding of why we are on the road that we are on. Again, it's based on what went into his thinking, being surrounded by radicals. You could hearken back to the days before the Civil War, when too many Americans believed that not all men were created equal. It was the Civil War that began the codification of the truth that here in America, yes, we are equal and we all have equal opportunities, not based on the color of our skin. You have equal opportunity to work hard and to succeed and to embrace the opportunities, the God-given opportunities, to develop resources and work extremely hard and as I say, to succeed. Now, it has taken all these years for many Americans to understand that the gravity, that mistake that took place before the Civil War and why the Civil War had to really start changing America. What Barack Obama seems to want to do is go back before those days when we were in different classes based on income, based on color of skin. Why are we allowing our country to move backwards instead of moving forward with the understanding that as our charters of liberty spell out for us, we are all created equally?"
Yes, there is some disingenuous about somebody who has made that amount of money criticizing GS. So he was a powerful client advocate who made that much dough because of........why, exactly?
I would agree that that seems to be a proper use of the word disingenuous. It's one thing, if you see something going on that you think is wrong to try to blow the whistle on it at teh time and perhaps even put your job on the line if you think the moral stakes are high enough. But to walk away with nine figures and blast the source of your wealth on the way out, well that's just uncouth even if everything you say is true.
I have never heard that woman say one intelligent or interesting thing. It depresses the crap out of me that she rose to celebrity the way she did. I wish people would just take away the mike.
Nah Slopey, here's a disingenuous person: Donatella.
She carries on as if she's that ever-so-independent mind. Funny , though, how she only can seem to find fault with folks like Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin.
Meanwhile, that eminent historian that she admires, Chris Matthews, had this beauty of a comment, calling Mormons and Catholics "cultists":
"I think religion matters," Chris Matthews said on MSNBC's "Ed Show" with host Ed Schultz. "Reverend Al, you, Ed and I know the way that the people in these polls down there say they think the president is a Muslim. I mean, the majority in one of those states thinks he is, the other 30-some percent don't know. In other words, they don't know whether he's lying about his religion, which is a pretty strong indictment right there. So, culturally, they are out to lunch for the president. There not going to vote for President Obama. So who they going get to beat him. That seems to be on their mind's now, not who they like. They are willing to outsource it to a Mormon."
"It seems to me, if they can win -- I said it's almost like calling up India, or somewhere in the third-world to get your computer fixed. You don't care who is fixing it, just fix the damn computer. They want to get rid of Obama so they're willing to vote for a guy they don't like or trust his religion. But they have no choice," Matthews said during MSNBC's primetime coverage of primary results on Tuesday night.
"They have three, or two RCs -- Roman Catholics running and a Mormon so the three cultists running. I have to pick one of the three cultists as they see them. This isn't as funny as I'm making it, but it's ridiculous to pick a guy they really think is the other, the heretic, the Muslim, what a strangest of religious prejudice is at work here, they pick the guy they don't like to pick a guy they hate worse," he finished."
I'm sure Donatella would have gotten around to criticizing him at some point.
Oh, I don't know. I think people like Greg Smith get into a line of work for whatever reasons, and over time it starts to eat away at you. You know it's not right, but you're a little stuck. You like the money and prestige, you like the lifestyle or whatever. You lie to yourself, saying it's just a job, a means to some end or another, family, kids, whatever, it's ok, I'm not doing anything bad. You don't like what you know you're doing, the culture, the effects on the larger universe, but you haven't come to grips with it. And you're too busy living your life. You plod on, hoping to ignore the worst and hope for the best...until one day, you just can't take it anymore and you have to get the f*ck out!
OK, my one and hopefully only political comment today. We dems did not -- and you can look this up, it's all there in the history books -- I say, did not ever nominate Susan Sarandon to be Vice President, one heartbeat away, as they say. They can show Rocky Horror Picture Show, or Dead Man Walking, or Thelma and Louise, or that baseball movie with Costner all they want on late night TV and we're still not going to nominate Susan Sarandon as VP.
Wow, benson, some friend you are. Donatella has consistently stood up for you, through thick and thin, defending some of your more rancid views on things, probably out of a combination of decency, and a shared background. But lately, she's been disagreeing with you, in the nicest ways possible, and for that, she gets the "Full Benson", a vitriolic personal attack. Perhaps in her "independence" she actually happens to think that Sarah P. and Rush are despicable persons. Being independent and fair does not mean one can't see what's right in front of you. You're quite a piece of work, yourself.
Don't worry, DH. It's happened to me, too. Amex is very good about these things. I once had someone charge $10K US to my card — which never left my wallet, btw.
I didn't even read it. I have been upset by different things on this blog at different times - sometimes for a week. I realize it is not worth getting upset. I have a real life, real beliefs, real friends, real family, real loves, interests, and real loyalties. I am not a straw figure to be burned for entertainment.
Maybe I will read it if I am feeling just too happy or I feel that I need to be punished. Not right now. It is a nice day.
No I wouldn't shoot Benson if I were on vacation with him. Shooting people is not in my value system. The goal is to protect oneself. Not to inflict violence on people.
Oh come on. Vitriolic personal attack? I just called out Donatella on one thing: her posturing that she's an independent. Folks (including Donatella) call me out every day on the OT for one thing or another. Thee's a series of constantly-running jokes here that some of us Republicans are uncaring jerks.
OK, just a reminder, folks, this is dibs' day on the OT. What do you want to talk about, dibs? Or should we just go back to cat pics and puns until we all simmer down?
My take: the guy has a point on a couple of things, especially when clients are / become counterparties. But his moral outrage is misplaced because 1) it's been like that for longer than he makes out and 2) he benefited from it massively himself.
My guess is he fell out with someone internally or missed a promotion.
i wish there were more ferris wheels all over the city. all we get are stupid ass neighborhood destroying whole foods and overpriced shitty "flea markets"
The difference being, Slopey, I'm not content with that, and plan on seeing these places with my own eyes. I have seen the Wheel, but not close up, and never got a chance to ride on it. Next time, most definitely! Even if it costs an arm and a leg, which I'm sure it does.
When I have time, I'm going to expand our discussion of yesterday into the larger topic of what constitutes "culture" these days. I'll wait until another day, as I'm in the OT doghouse right now ;-(.
Sorry, it was last night (past my bedtime):
There is a thing I want to go to in Brooklyn tomorrow evening but I also need to go running. Is it heinous if I run TO Brooklyn and show up to a social event all gross and sweaty?
Theater picture that Arkady posted above is The Globe Theatre on the south bank.
The original Globe, on the same site I think, was where a lot of Shakespeare's plays were performed for the first time. They reconstructed it in the 1990's based on what they knew of the original & now do a lot of Shakespeare performances there again.
Benson walked right into the dog house. MM has it right. I'm pretty surprised seeing him do the same kind of crap as Rob--attacking someone who supports him.
Yes, DIBS, I "attacked" Donatella. I called her "disingenuous" regarding her political posturing. Terrible. Before my execution, I would just like to note that prior to my attack Donatella had just written a post calling the author of that NYT piece "disingenuous".
ha, further evidence of what I postulated last week. murdoch's son got his sorry butt outa london and to nyc PDQ because
was afraid gonna end up in prison.
"March 13, 2012 - Rebekah Brooks, the former chief executive of News International was arrested, according to sources. She was among six people taken into custody relating to the phone hacking scandal."
would probably have to be charged with real crime to get extradited. In UK, I think they can just lock you up without charges. They're a bit 3rd world when comes to some legal matters.
something seems wrong when still winter and I'm having my lunch in backyard and feel like I'm getting sunburned and perspiring while sitting in just shorts. (and I'm not in florida or some other cultural mecca).
everything in UK is same approx area. I mean really -- how they have so many regions and accents in a place about as big
as 2 US states.
http://sordnbord.blogspot.com/2011/07/ukus-superimposed-map.html
Yeah can get from most places to most other places in England & Wales in a day's drive. When we used to go on vacation in Southern / SW England we'd leave at dawn and be there by mid to late afternoon.
North of Scotland is a different story & takes much longer.
Benson, to be safe, it's best you buy me a drink and offer me some tri-color cookies when you see me tonight - ie to ensure we're on good terms and that I got your back if something breaks out
I saw a show at the Globe - you have to stand the entire time. The idea was more fun than the actuality. But I bought bricks & got certificates for them as presents to several teens who were studying Shakespeare in the US.
Yes, MM, the Eye is very expensive - I got on free because my godson's company owns it. It is great, though. Really disorienting: one's image of London is skewed & buildings are in surprising places because the Thames is so sinuous & you assume a lot at ground level that simply isn't true.
For those who missed the posts, emails, memos, texts and IMs, THIS IS DAVE's DAY. And a lot of people are working very hard (h/nh) to make it a very special day for him.
So all of you STFU already!!!!! There will be NO MORE FIGHTING here today, or I will hunt the offenders down and beat the living crap out of you. Well, I'm Jewish, so I won't do it myself, but I WILL hire someone to beat the living crap out of you.
Broadway does get crowded but there are lots of fairly similar villages in that area as well.
It's about 25-30 miles south of Droitwich. It's on the northern edge of a region called The Cotswolds, famous for its scenery.
Apple TV set (not that $99 tv modem thingie) is rumored to be in production starting summer and hit stores by year end. guess I'll be buying a placeholder TV when I move so I can lavish on myself with a fancy Apple TV.
btw, intel and nvidia pissing mighty apple off with their shitty chip perf and chip production yield %. I'll connect the dots and say good odds of AMD getting some love from the juicy fruit. yeah, I still got the amd shs.
Don't worry, CGar. I hear that there will be a few rolls, I mean I hear that there is someone who can duct tape any offenders to light poles in the area. ; )
I'd be happy to see any of it, really! I have lists of areas/places where my peeps are from. I'd love to do a week or two of driving around and seeing some of them. And of course, if the time machine is ready by then... ; )
DH, it's wednesday. It'll be essentially closed to public. I remember one time we were there on a Wednesday or Thursday for a gathering and there was like 2 other people besides PLUSAs there.
M4L, Roger that. Benson, I want Vodka Cranberries in da houzzzzz.
Of interest:
March 24th, from 11am to 3pm, the Gowanus Canal Conservancy is organizing a Tree Giveaway and Clean & Green! event at The Salt Lot, 2nd Avenue and 5th Street. 100 trees will be given away courtesy of the MillionTreesNYC and New York Restoration Project. Trees must be planted in the ground, and on private property. Get your tree and stick around to help clean and green the banks of the Gowanus.
Depends on who you ask . . . will explain offline. But, (a) cobble's right and I pity anyone else who's there; and (2) Wednesday is a quiet night so we'll effectively have the place to ourselves.
jessi, it's supposed to be all set up already, including the books. Dave's the hostess, so I imagine he can sing anything he wants. I imagine he can give a concert if it makes him happy . . . of course, some have already threatened to leave on account of his singing . . .
I also better warn some of you more delicate, puritanical and easily offended people. There will be a 9:00 exhibition of the art of Japanese Bukkake with 20 guys who are being flown in from the J league Lounge in Shinjuku ni-chome.
The new chef of Le Bec-Fin will be former French Laundry sous chef, Walter Abrams. For the last year Abrams has been chef de cuisine at San Francisco’s Spruce. Abrams will be accompanied by his girlfriend, Jennifer Smith (another French Laundry alum) who will be the new executive pastry chef.
lol, daVe - look at this comment in the thread where your post is from:
I wish him luck but I'm sure neither of them know what a dump of a city they are moving to.
Yes, DH - sad but true. In this case, Le Bec Fin was a Philly claim to fame and we'd like it to stay that way. Chef Perrier said he didnt have it anymore.
"but I WILL hire someone to beat the living crap out of you."
LOL. Of course you'll have to get a referral from kens for Russkie mob hit man. I suspect Italian mob hitmen will be conflicted out of the job ;)
[runs for deep cover] [j/k benson, I'll be working the velvet rope line for admission to the disingenuous corner. I'll be the arbiter of who gets in . . . and of course out.]
"Mine's a vodka & soda."
Ah, the low carb drink of champions. I may need a few of those myself.
Cobble, make sure you're hydrated. if you pass out, BH isn't there to pick you up and no one else will either. you'll just get stepped on and kicjed into the corner
Dave, your comments on DOB lol. You have NO idea. We get the most retarded violations for the building and then it takes forever to get them removed or I have to hire someone to actually do the legwork. It's ridiculous. I wish I knew the ropes to remove them myself. We have a violation for illegal wall partition dating back to 2006 with Stop Work order. The problem here...ALL WALLS IN BASEMENT ARE ORIGINAL from 1954 when the building was built. We NEVER touched a wall except for super painting it and maybe putting a silicone on cracks. Don't know HOW we ever go it but to weed through the bureaucracy without paying an expeditor is impossible.
I do not think D'Antoni was the problem. I generally do not like it when a coach can only coach a "system" and can't figure out the best gameplan for the team he has, but the pieces do not fit on this team. But it was turning into a polite cold war between coach and marquee player and we know who wins that one.
I am bringing Johnie "no chin" Compaciabello with me. I have a feeling I might need him when Donatella and the women of CATO (Cat Aficianado Treaty Organization) see me.
slopey, mike resigning is good news. now let's pray Dolan does trade Melo for Howard. Be it Sloan or zen master, I bet they prefere the big beast in the middle vs. this all-talk-no-production melo
yeah Slopey but D'Antoni couldn't get the lines together. Would play Douglas who couldn't score but let rookies sit on bench who had heck of a lot more energy until he finally let Lin play one game. Barely played shumpert who did much better on court than Douglas. Now Davis needs to come back into the groove but he was benching him and he is a great player who has been out of the system for a while. Terrible decisions all around. There is NO reason Knicks can't be right by Miami and Lakers with the players we have. It's a VERY strong team so you can't blame the skill, just the coaching. Lebron, Bosh and Wade don't really mesh but coach made it work.
benson, at first sighting of them, just quickly get down on your knees and offer appeasement drinks - ie no different than when we get into trouble with the wife. I'm more than willing to show you the proper form if it's been a while for you - I just had to do that other day so my form is up to par
slopey, melo on team would work or work better if his greedy ass didn't threaten gullible Dolan that he would go to Nets if no trade cause he could've signed with us in off season then we trade for CP3. CP3 would have no problem telling him or Amare who is getting the ball where and when.
our 2 stars talk great but done little this year. don't reb, don't defend etc. only thing they do is cash the big checks. Bron bron and crew took less money to play together, reb, play D etc
Speaking of mobsters, I still haven't gotten out of jury duty on the Federal Racketeering and Murder case.
I have to call in every night at 7pm, and listen for my juror number.
If I didn't have a million better things to do, 2 kids and an ex-wife to support, and a brilliant and beautiful wife who I would like to hang out with for a lot more years, this whole "crime family" trial of the decade would actually be interesting.
...just reading about the top 10 "cleanest" countries as judged by their streets and public spaces.
Places like Austria, Colombia, Norway and Iceland top the list.
No surprise that the USA isn't there, New Yorkers are a bunch of entitled piggies when it comes to cleaning their streets.
Why do parents in this city not teach their kids to put their trash in a receptacle or in their pocket until they see a proper place to dispose of it?
...everyone must be sleeping in their secret compartment beneath the work desk.
hummm,
let's see what topic I'd like to hear myself think out loud about?
...ah yes, report cards and parent teacher conferences. That'll work.
I got the report cards back from school yesterday. They're broken up into :
Writing
Math
Reading
Science
Social Development (I think)
...anyway, I remember I used to get either
Excellent
Satisfactory
Needs Improvement
Unsatisfactory
Melo better start playing now. I am going to the game next tuesday so I better see him putting up at least 30 points a game now. Amare is struggeling with his knees it seems. Don't know how much juice is left in him (and he is still young!).
The teacher's still have a space for writing down comments but these days they're computerized and I get the feeling that the teachers must have a pdf. file of catchy phrases that they can put in there to fill the space.
Like:
A pleasure to have in class, but needs improvement on potty mouth.
or
Making progress in social skills but can be brutally honest with teachers at times.
Legion, it's to get you used to the overwhelming fixation on THE TEST. State tests graded 1-2-3-4. Schools, principals, teachers graded on test scores. Get used to it.
"The teacher's still have a space for writing down comments"
Do they grade on the correct usage of apostrophes?
kens, 30 for melo sounds great but not if it takes him 30 shots to get there. Melo's hands are where basketballs go to die. NYKs have capable scorers but the ball has to move (nh).
yes rf,
the dreaded state tests are the only thing the poor kids are made to focus on for long periods of time.
Legiongirl is in kindergarten and is tasked with learning reading and writing by June!
In kindergarten all I had to accomplish was building with wooden blocks and keeping my lunch down.
"Do they grade on the correct usage of apostrophes?"
I like to use extra apostrophes,
too few and we start to forget the possessive form of nouns
...next we have a bunch of liberals telling us to abandon the ownership society. ;o)
quote:
Why do parents in this city not teach their kids to put their trash in a receptacle or in their pocket until they see a proper place to dispose of it?
lol who knows maybe cuz it's gay? i saw a kid walk toward a trash can once to throw something away and his friend or whatever was like that's gay and proceeded to throw his potato chips bag on the ground :-/
One thing that I've learned about humans, having lived my entire life in this crowded city,
is that there is a sizeable percentage who sort of enjoy living in their own crud.
I think it's like a nesting instinct. Except that bird nests are pretty neat and organized when they incorporate stray bits of trash or string.
"I like to use extra apostrophes,
too few and we start to forget the possessive form of nouns"
The way to remember the possessive form of nouns is to use an apostrophe to signal when you mean a possessive. Using it willy nilly on non-possessive plurals is a lowering of standards. I would have thought you conservatives would be sticklers for the maintenance of standards and traditions, but you now reveal what I have long suspected: that all you righties really care about is possessing everything yourselves.
Actually, dibs, your apostrophe should be placed before the "s". Otherwise there's a collectivist connotation to your comment you probably did not intend. (Oddly, this grammar geek shit (no rob) is more fun than the work I have to do right now.)
Yes, I meant it collectively. That said, "people" is oftentimes considered the plural as well but I meant all people's in all countries, everywhere, or at least those who have more than the have nots
"Why didnt apple put this on over the glass at the factory"
I don't know. Let's find the malnourished Chinese 12-year-old who screwed this up on the 11th hour of her shift and ask her why. She's probably hanging out in the suicide net so should be able to talk.
[Sorry, that grammar thing got me really punchy. I may need a drink soon.]
Ok, I have to get ready for tonight's festivities....bath, do my hair and nails, pluck my eyebrows ans get my mascara right. God forbid I look like some of you train wrecks
OK, mellowing out, now. Feel free to throw those apostrophes around where they don't belong, post all the republican bullshit you want, and relish the exploitation of child labor for your personal amusement all you want. I'm sticking to lighthearted banter, now, with the occasional pun if the chance arises. It's your day. Enjoy.
"lol who knows maybe cuz it's gay? i saw a kid walk toward a trash can once to throw something away and his friend or whatever was like that's gay and proceeded to throw his potato chips bag on the ground :-/
"
*rob*
...yes, I suspect there is some sort of "macho" connotation behind not having to follow basic sanitation laws.
Which if funny because the ones who tend to throw trash on the floor probably still live at home with their mommy or grandma who clean up after them.
People caught up in "macho" culture have serious insecurity issues.
oh crap what time is this thing? just walked my dog, about to shower. dave dont get excited when you see me walking in the door with a Coach bag (not an ACTUAL coach bag, but a gift bag from the Coach store). the presents in the bag are not for you, unfortunately i couldnt find anything for you. the stuff in the bag is for snappy and rf's daughter (not coach bags btw, dont ask me why i have a coach bag bag)
Left my jacket at Montero's by mistake. If anyone reads this while they are still there, could they ask Montero's to save it for me and I'll be in to pick it up in a few days? Montero's phone number no longer works. It's green cotton with green leather trim. Thanks.
cobble didnt say hi to me either benson and i picked up so much negative vibes from some people i could have cut it wih a butterknife! oh well.
everyone i did get to talk to, it was nice.
Sorry I missed some people. *rob* the psychic part of your brain was right. I went to pick up some "things" some lady was going to give to Ms. L and she changed the time, saying tonight was the only night I could do it. It was like I was moving her apartment. I got a crib, car seat, tons of clothes, baby stuff. It took me forever to take it, to bring it home and then I got there late! Not too late though to see the guest of honor and many Plusas. Sorry I missed you rf and *rob*. But it was fun!
GM
Pi has it's own website. http://www.piday.org/million.php
It would be impossible for me not to know what pi is. I was forced fed pi as a child.
It really should be called "International Kiss a Geek Day" or "International Kiss your favorite Mathmatician Day". I'd kiss mine, but he's in another state. : (
I guess the real math nerds would celebrate Pi day between 3 and 4 am.
Curiously, there is already a spoof up on the Daily Mash in which he is Darth Vader resigning from the Death Star.
Obviously, he must be leaving to create his own hedge fund. Duh. This is the way to get clients -- a giant free ad in the NYT about what a moral guy you are.
Snort!
How do you feel about a cruise?
You can go to apple and get them to do anything for you free though
No wonder you're an Apple fan!!!
Sounds a lot like one of your Trix.
Guess we're fucked.
How quickly the republicans turn to democrats when they retire...Looking to get stuff for free! : P
It's not like the plumbing has worked all that well at montero's before.
17 dollars a pint

*rob*
Uh, oh, scratch those plans, snappy.
Grrr...not doing this today. I'm in a good mood and wanna keep it that way. Leaving now to maintain it.
Later PLUSAs.

it's so funny how the truth stings for some people. it's just ice cream and slow children.
*rob*
That's why people in Park Slope take free swipes of ice cream: the rents are TOO DAMN HIGH.
*rob*
*rob*
I've heard that, Pete. I've also heard they have a tendency to wear neon pink and be very afraid of peacocks. : P
but weather is getting warmer and since they are self-absorbed like all dog owners...don't pick up to poo that often and now weather is getting warmer and getting dog poo mist smell.
And what's wrong with that? Huh????????
*rob*
oh yeah, and listen to the psychic part of *rob*s brain.
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!
effing dog owners - next door they keep the dog outside all day which isn't so bad because it is not a dog that barks.
but weather is getting warmer and since they are self-absorbed like all dog owners...don't pick up to poo that often and now weather is getting warmer and getting dog poo mist smell.
oh whatever, dog shit is not as bad as baby shit. in my building people put diapers in the trash, which i guess IS where it's supposed to go, but on warm days the smell definitely wafts and drifts down the whole block.
*rob*
*rob*
I bet they're all just laughing at it...all the way to the bank. Greed is good. : (
As BH put it not long ago: "Remember the corporate yuppies that we hated in the 80s? They're the guys running everything now."
*rob*
ha, I can only imagine benson's reaction to slopey's wedding venue choices as being even worse than his reaction to his vacation ideas.

*rob*
Yep, I have no doubt a (very) few are sitting at their desks, hanging their heads, and wondering how much longer they can take working there or are actively planning their exit strategies for whatever number of years until they can walk away.

= < >?
You could be first!
Yes, I'm quite sure. One of my oldest friends, from childhood, got out a couple years before the crash. I'm dying to talk to him about this. I bet he won't even *try* to defend GS.
Paging Dr. Freud . . .
*rob*
I think even Freud would give up. : P
he has burned his bridges. he's screwed from here on.
You can't make this stuff up.
Yes, there is some disingenuous about somebody who has made that amount of money criticizing GS. So he was a powerful client advocate who made that much dough because of........why, exactly?
Must be his innate brilliance.
Sarah Palin is a reality show that just won't end. A terrifying joke.
I have never heard that woman say one intelligent or interesting thing. It depresses the crap out of me that she rose to celebrity the way she did. I wish people would just take away the mike.
http://www.borowitzreport.com/2012/03/14/a-response-from-goldman-sachs/
Sarah Palin = the person that keeps un-nerving liberals!
Yes, I think the two of you would shoot each other if you went on vacation together, even a cruise.
ROFL!!
At least Susan Sarandon has complete command of the english language!
Maybe I will read it if I am feeling just too happy or I feel that I need to be punished. Not right now. It is a nice day.
Stern pole with light $259
Bow pole with flag $69
Water pump $400
Spending money on something you like instead of people who annoy you: Priceless
No I wouldn't shoot Benson if I were on vacation with him. Shooting people is not in my value system. The goal is to protect oneself. Not to inflict violence on people.
Benson, go buy some paper clips from Staples. I'm going out now.
benson was out of order re donatella but is right about this.

My take: the guy has a point on a couple of things, especially when clients are / become counterparties. But his moral outrage is misplaced because 1) it's been like that for longer than he makes out and 2) he benefited from it massively himself.
My guess is he fell out with someone internally or missed a promotion.

When I have time, I'm going to expand our discussion of yesterday into the larger topic of what constitutes "culture" these days. I'll wait until another day, as I'm in the OT doghouse right now ;-(.
There is a thing I want to go to in Brooklyn tomorrow evening but I also need to go running. Is it heinous if I run TO Brooklyn and show up to a social event all gross and sweaty?
That's great, benson, I'll look forward to skewering you then, too! : P
The original Globe, on the same site I think, was where a lot of Shakespeare's plays were performed for the first time. They reconstructed it in the 1990's based on what they knew of the original & now do a lot of Shakespeare performances there again.
Which part is that, out of interest??
Wales has some good scenery but it rains a lot there!
was afraid gonna end up in prison.
"March 13, 2012 - Rebekah Brooks, the former chief executive of News International was arrested, according to sources. She was among six people taken into custody relating to the phone hacking scandal."
It's nowhere near where I'm from!
I've read Bobos in Paradise so you don't need to trot out those ideas...

North of Scotland is a different story & takes much longer.
STFU or they'll go back to posting cat pics!!!!!
JACKAL, you're a real pain in the ass. I just emailed you again about your running / event dilemma and offered a suggestion if you want.
Yes, MM, the Eye is very expensive - I got on free because my godson's company owns it. It is great, though. Really disorienting: one's image of London is skewed & buildings are in surprising places because the Thames is so sinuous & you assume a lot at ground level that simply isn't true.
*rob*, it's a wonder you leave the house.
It's about 25-30 miles south of Droitwich. It's on the northern edge of a region called The Cotswolds, famous for its scenery.
btw, intel and nvidia pissing mighty apple off with their shitty chip perf and chip production yield %. I'll connect the dots and say good odds of AMD getting some love from the juicy fruit. yeah, I still got the amd shs.
I'd be happy to see any of it, really! I have lists of areas/places where my peeps are from. I'd love to do a week or two of driving around and seeing some of them. And of course, if the time machine is ready by then... ; )
If it's not, 'the public' should be forewarned! : P
M4L, Roger that. Benson, I want Vodka Cranberries in da houzzzzz.
Oh? Is that what delusions are called these days?
Depends on who you ask . . . will explain offline. But, (a) cobble's right and I pity anyone else who's there; and (2) Wednesday is a quiet night so we'll effectively have the place to ourselves.
just getting prepared for that - be it on the Nets or on the Knicks
Mine's a vodka & soda.
Whatever dave puts in will jump the line ahead of any of you ungrateful assholes.
Good. The less, the merrier.
The new chef of Le Bec-Fin will be former French Laundry sous chef, Walter Abrams. For the last year Abrams has been chef de cuisine at San Francisco’s Spruce. Abrams will be accompanied by his girlfriend, Jennifer Smith (another French Laundry alum) who will be the new executive pastry chef.
art? they do it in patterns??
I wish him luck but I'm sure neither of them know what a dump of a city they are moving to.
All inferior to french laundry.
(ok, now I'm really outta here.)
'cept Kens is at the top of my list of people to beat the crap out of!!
far be it for me to say "I told you so" but . . .
what did I miss?
...I heard that donatella was being uncharacteristically mean to benson. :o(
our 2 stars talk great but done little this year. don't reb, don't defend etc. only thing they do is cash the big checks. Bron bron and crew took less money to play together, reb, play D etc
Places like Austria, Colombia, Norway and Iceland top the list.
No surprise that the USA isn't there, New Yorkers are a bunch of entitled piggies when it comes to cleaning their streets.
Why do parents in this city not teach their kids to put their trash in a receptacle or in their pocket until they see a proper place to dispose of it?
hummm,
let's see what topic I'd like to hear myself think out loud about?
...ah yes, report cards and parent teacher conferences. That'll work.
I got the report cards back from school yesterday. They're broken up into :
Writing
Math
Reading
Science
Social Development (I think)
...anyway, I remember I used to get either
Excellent
Satisfactory
Needs Improvement
Unsatisfactory
now they get numbers 1,2,3 or 4.
Like:
A pleasure to have in class, but needs improvement on potty mouth.
or
Making progress in social skills but can be brutally honest with teachers at times.
I'm giving you a 4 or Excellent for wrangling the OT crowd into shape!
Do they grade on the correct usage of apostrophes?
kens, 30 for melo sounds great but not if it takes him 30 shots to get there. Melo's hands are where basketballs go to die. NYKs have capable scorers but the ball has to move (nh).
FDR is my wife's Alma Mater
the dreaded state tests are the only thing the poor kids are made to focus on for long periods of time.
Legiongirl is in kindergarten and is tasked with learning reading and writing by June!
In kindergarten all I had to accomplish was building with wooden blocks and keeping my lunch down.
I like to use extra apostrophes,
too few and we start to forget the possessive form of nouns
...next we have a bunch of liberals telling us to abandon the ownership society. ;o)
Why do parents in this city not teach their kids to put their trash in a receptacle or in their pocket until they see a proper place to dispose of it?

is that there is a sizeable percentage who sort of enjoy living in their own crud.
I think it's like a nesting instinct. Except that bird nests are pretty neat and organized when they incorporate stray bits of trash or string.
too few and we start to forget the possessive form of nouns"
The way to remember the possessive form of nouns is to use an apostrophe to signal when you mean a possessive. Using it willy nilly on non-possessive plurals is a lowering of standards. I would have thought you conservatives would be sticklers for the maintenance of standards and traditions, but you now reveal what I have long suspected: that all you righties really care about is possessing everything yourselves.
you're becoming such a grammar fascist lately!
I thought you were all about: "If it feels good, do it" ?
*rob*
*rob*
??????
Apostrophe is trying to say they own something?
Like: Mr. Apostrophe's car was the bomb.
Is that redundent or just showing off at that point?
Hoarders is pretty rancid in some episodes.
A lot of hoarding behavior stems from a need to keep control of one's life.
I don't know. Let's find the malnourished Chinese 12-year-old who screwed this up on the 11th hour of her shift and ask her why. She's probably hanging out in the suicide net so should be able to talk.
[Sorry, that grammar thing got me really punchy. I may need a drink soon.]
One more grammar check and I'm taking out my Funkin Wagnall's!

by the way, not all Republicans are exploitative.

On the other hand, Cobble barely said hello to me, and then wouldn't hug me good night when she was leaving. She's a meanie!
I agree that JB is quite the singer.
(except benson. : P )
everyone i did get to talk to, it was nice.

Oh and Cobble Snaps productions outdid themselves with the book. It was really beautiful. And bxgrl did a great M print!
