GM, I turned off Joe Scarborough this am. Making good on my threat to consume less TV political news coverage. This after hearing some R congressman call Obama Captain Scettino. Then Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Mika B and a few others skewer the congressman on his disgraceful remark....and on...and on....and on.

Today I am going to the BP oil forecast given every January giving a global oil supply and demand forecast. It is always very well done and I'll see some of my buddies.

Have a good day losers.

The Hong Kong government has such a huge surplus that it's giving out HKD 6,000 to everyone who carries a Hong Kong ID card. That's about $775 US.

This is of course because they have a flat tax and ZERO tax on dividends.

I went out to dinner with a bunch of southerners last night. You know, the kind of people who all have a favorite football school, as if higher education in the United States existed for the purpose of delivering football to middle-aged men with potbellies. I explained to them that (1) I really don't care about football and (2) in any event, it's a highly homosexual sport. They were strangely unreceptive to my views.

A Chinese guy here in NYC told me about that refund. he's leaving for HK tomorrow to get it. I'm assuming he's using it to pay for airfare for a trip he wouldn't ordinarily take but airfare, even for coach (God forbid) has got to be around $700, maybe less with some no frills carrier.

I could never imagine flying coach 18 hours or so to Hong Kong. Never. No wine?????????????

referring to Obama as that captain is not disgraceful. Obama abandoned ship right after he was elected. He allowed the economy to sink without even an attempt at a tax cut or a housing relief. Instead it was Obamacare which most of the people in the US were against.

how much are xrays normally at dentists? like an average cost? NOT digital xrays btw cuz those are like 4-5x the price of regular xrays (i assume they arent going doing digital xrays where i go... i hope). im curious because i have a 250 dollar deductible for the dentist per year that i have to pay before any insurance kicks in, so essentially i am assuming the worst today and that my visit just for the xrays is going to be 250 dollars? fucking blows cuz that's essentially all i have left after getting paid yesterday and paying my rent and bills. HELLO ANOTHER TWO WEEKS OF MAD SCROUNGING!!!! I AM SO SICK OF THIS.

Speaking of women's fashion....

........as I was passing the magazine stand this morning, I was wondering if Cosmopolitan ever really changes the titles on its cover. It seems to me that every month they just change the photo on the cover, and run with the same headlines:

"Six sex tips that will drive him crazy!!!!"

"Three beauty tips to bring out the new you"

"The latest fashion trends from Paris".

"Get ready for the beach: our new work-out routine!!"

Joseph E. Brooks, a retail executive who doubled the size of the Lord & Taylor chain and made its flagship New York store a showplace of spectacle, including elaborate retail stagecraft and a daily morning rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” died on Thursday in Manhattan. Beginning in 1980, during the Iran hostage crisis, Mr. Brooks ordered that “The Star-Spangled Banner” be played each morning at the start of business throughout the store. He wanted to remind people, he said, that “with all its problems, this is still the greatest country in the world.”

Was in the store one early morning b4 xmas when it was played, everyone stopped what they were doing and put the hand over their heart.

Rant for a Tuesday:

A Case Study in Government Ineptitude
or why bureaucracy will always be at odds with efficiency.

As a health care professional, I am licensed by the State of NY with a number.
I am registered with the State of NY with a number.
I have a Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license and number.
I have a number with the Board of Certification for my field.
I have a Medicare identifier number with the federal Centers For Medicare and Medicaid Services.
I have a "Unique" provider ID number (UPIN).
I have a state issued Medicaid number.
I have a social security number.
A few years back, in an effort to "streamline" things, the Federal government decided to add another number to the mix. A National Provider ID number (NPI) which you will see listed on your doctor's prescriptions along with the DEA number and State License number.

I pay fees to maintain most of these numbers and the bureaucracy behind them.

So, here is my question:
If our government expends billions on maintaining and updating and reviewing and certifying all these numbers and data bases,
WHY, when I call up to update my information with the government, can't they tell me what is in my information file, what numbers I am linked to or for that matter, where I even practice?

...remember how computers were supposed to make everything easier? How they kept telling us the computers can do a billion calculations per second?
Well they're only as good as the people that run them unfortunately. And when it comes to our government, Federal and State, that doesn't seem to be very good.

Amazing that I cannot even access my data file with my own "national provider ID" and update information!
And they cannot tell me if there is anything wrong on file. Because they can't seem to link all the numbers or they don't even have them available!

That is the problem my friends.

Re Cosmo, my high school girlfriends and I used to buy that once in a while and viewed it somehow as a teenage boy might view Playboy. We called it the "Slut Magazine". No, it has never changed. Same stories. I read a book by Helen Gurley Br0wn once -- she had this whole "mouseburger" philosophy designed for girls to get ahead with men and work - girls who weren't particularly beautiful, brilliant or rich. It was sort of like "TRY REAL HARD".

I read this book and I was surprised to feel very sorry for her, really sorry for her trying to constantly transform herself into a sexy babe. How tiring. How despressing. How sad to think you had to work SO HARD to be loved.

Arkady,
I get your point about numerous private sector companies messing things up on occasion.
However, there is a free market check to those scenarios;
if Verizon or AT&T don't get my address and information right, they don't get paid.

We are talking about numerous government agencies whose entire raison d'etre is keeping a data base of particular individuals.
The government NPI administrator is not providing another service on the side like making sneakers or spying on cell phone conversations. The NPI was set up to make things easier for healthcare professionals and to streamline the gathering of information.

FAIL.

Benson, this will be hard for the gov to NOT arrest some folks here. The public pressure is too great and the rule broken is too important for there NOT to be jail time. "I don't know" will and should NOT be a "get out of jail" answer for the Exec's.

Agree benson and M4L,

I was listening to the car radio yesterday and they mentioned the "missing" 1.2 billion dollars.

In an effort to give an equal opportunity bashing to the private sector:

Anyone involved in any way with the management of those funds should be tried under the RICO statutes.
As conspirators under Federal law with no chance of parole once convicted.

Yes, I loved the term "vaporized". What that bastard did was pure evil. Casually and dismissively dispensed. On a TRADE, casually destroyed a firm and tossed 3,000 hard working non-master of the universe futures brokers and staff into the dumpster. Ripped off 50,000 non-master of the universe ordinary commodity producers, merchandizers, and consumers who used the futures markets for insurance-like hedging for the economic STABILITY of their enterprises.

Motherfucker.

Not that I would want to give President Obama any advice,

Conspiracy and racketeering with a pattern of embezzlement.

It would surely play to the OWS base.

there are inherent checks and balances in the private sector. For example, it's hard to commit fraud or steal funds if there are none there to take.
The government (public) sector has the ability to continue funding itself into oblivion because they can mandate it. Look at Solyndra.

"but what will continue to be called into question by the namby pamby liberal left is whether or not school children can still recite the Pledge of Allegiance and include "one nation, under God.""

Yes, our nation was going to hell in a handbasket until a Christian Socialist wrote the pledge (without the "under God") in 1892. We were still on the downward spiral when Congress officially adopted the pledge (again without the "under God") in 1942. Things still weren't right with the republic until 1954 when those two words were added and things have been peachy keen ever since. So yes, it is of paramount importance that we make schoolkids throughout the land say those two words. Come to think of it, I don't know how we won WWI without them.

"Dona, why do you think it is taking so long to go after Corzine????"

Probably because they are building an airtight case, and don't want to blow it with perp walks and crying family members and pontificating defense attorneys.

No one is howling, because honestly, who cares, outside of NY financial types? People outside of the financial sector, which is most of America, are worried about jobs, job security, and a million other things that affect them every day. Jon Corzine and his company are not on that list. It sucks for those who worked for his company, and I hope they get him good, but whether he's in jail, or sitting at home, or in Fiji, really doesn't put a dollar in most people's wallets. It has absolutely nothing to do with "liberal media" or Democrats, or Republicans, for that matter.

Montrose;

You could not be more wrong about the impact of MF. As was well documented in many newspapers, and as Donatella alluded to, MF's biggest customer class, by far, was family farmers. They used it to hedge on crop prices.

Unlike the mortgage crisis, which does have some shades of gray, this is as black and white a case of fraud as there can be. They violated one of the fundamental rules of a fiduciary institution: they dipped into the accounts of their customer, without authorization, to make big bets (in the hopes of a windfall that they would keep).

2011 Tax Refund Delay

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bad news is hitting consumers who filed 1040 federal income tax returns early. They're going to wait possibly a week or so longer than expected to get refunds as the Internal Revenue Service attempts a tougher crackdown on criminals who file fake returns to snag illegal refunds early in the season.
We got news of one such case involving a group out of Detroit this week.
John Hewitt, CEO and founder of Liberty Tax Service, based in Virginia Beach, Va., said taxpayers who filed returns any time from the first day of the tax season, Jan. 17, through Jan. 24 are facing potential delays.
"Usually, the refunds take a week to 10 days," said Hewitt, adding that refunds are likely to take up to 14 days.
Federal officials say that a group of metro Detroit tax preparers submitted at least 352 fake tax returns using names and Social Security numbers of the dead in an attempt to obtain more than $800,000 in refunds, according to court documents.

"The delay was caused by new safeguards installed in IRS computer systems to prevent refund fraud, IRS spokesman Michelle Eldridge says. The problem is limited to taxpayers whose returns were filed before Jan. 26. Taxpayers whose returns were accepted on or after that date will not be affected, Eldridge says." - USA TODAY

What is going to happen with natural gas is that near term there will be production shut in because of the massive increase in supply and storage and pipelines filling up to the point that there is no choice. It is the increase of supply met with trapped supplies and a very very warm winter. Re calling the equity plays there, this is etson's expertise, but it looks like there will be several bankrupcies by some smaller players. This presentation was on broad trends going out to 2030.

What's not to understand? There are several reasons why nat gas might be shut in, but the system as a whole is at its fullest in late summer. Gas is injected into storage all spring / summer and withdrawn all winter, so storage levels peak in late summer / early fall. This is because weather is the biggest single driver of demand patterns.
This means that wells in some regions will not be able to be connected to the system and the gas will not be sold, or some wells will have to have their production curtailed because there is nowhere for it to go. So gas producers make very little money under such a scenario.

If it's 'shut in' you're having trouble with, that's common terminology for 'not produced' or in this case 'unable to be produced'.

im actually not a fan of most accents, i deal with them all day long from all over Earth. i think that nyc accent is easier to understand, as uncouth as it actually sounds. there are some accents where i have to make people repeat what they said like 5 times. my hearing problem doesnt help all that much, but im pretty sure it's mostly the accent. im good getting spanish accents, waspy accents, and that old school nyc accent. im awful with the more obviously hard to get accents.. french, german, REALLY bad with italian (from italy) accents, canadian accents (actually canadian accents can be easy to understand unless they are french canadadian but they give me heart burn). ive encountered many accents that i could not decipher what country it was from or even what region which is really strange cuz if you dont automatically know what accent it is it sounds like gibberish. another accent i cant stand? sorry, but i find this to be the case. women, usually under 30, talk like they have marbles in their mouths when it comes to generic newscaster accent, it's really awful. i find southern accents to be medium comprehension wise, but they always make me giggle for some reason. and then there's a very VERY distinct scholar from new england accent that is just off the hook obnoxiously strange.

you make it sound like that is something i normally would say on a vacation day. it's not. october-december sometimes i use my vacation days (they expire every year on new years) and take fridays off. those are AMAZING vacation days. ive done the whole thing before where i took off a week in a row, once a week and a half. gah! and honestly those are not worth doing unless you really are going on some vacation (sorry, but going places on the internet gets boring after day 2 or so). what i SHOULD do is start planning actual vacations to go places around the time i get my tax refund. 1/2 of my tax refund this year will be going to get that one molar finished with it's crown (the post and core are in, and the root canal done, just need to finish the last part...), but i still have the rest left and plan to go down to south carolina to visit my grandmother.

it's sort of a test for me.. like, as in, if i actually DO get down there im going to be very proud of myself, and if i DON'T get down there which pretty much everyone is betting on happening im gonna be really pissed off at myself. but i think as soon as i get my refund im going to buy a ticket as last minute as possible to get the cheapest rate and just assume that tickets are non refundable. then im mailing my grandmother 100 bux from the refund a few days before i get down there cuz i really dont wanna show up totally broke and busted. her deceased son's baby momma wants to take me out on the town in charleston, and it would be gauche to show up with no money.

well ill be damned, i think i just formed the perfect plan for this trip. oh crap. wait, does amtrak or whatever require a non expired ID? shit shit shit shit. i completely forgot about that. im going to do that this week. how long do you think it takes to get your ID in the mail? they give you a temp ID right in the meantime? can that be used to get a train ticket? or is it totally not necessary. i might also take a bus. i dont know which would be better, taking a bus or a train. i actually prefer buses (like snappy) but i dont know if the length of a bus ride would be annoying. isnt it like over 12 hours? what if i dont get a seat? are you guaranteed seats on those kinds of long ass drive buses? actually when i used to take the bus to port authority in jersey if the bus was crowded i would just pop a squat on the floor and never had a problem, so id probably do that if i didnt get a seat.

Guess we have different definitions of 'afford' and 'yacht'.
Threshold for 1% of income = $350- $500,000 depending on the survey. Think threshold for 1% of net worth is about $1.5mm.
Decent yacht = $1mm ish +. Don't know cost to maintain but assume mid five figures p.a.

As a threshold 1%er you could probably just about do it I guess but would have to cut out a lot of other 1% stuff.

You trash-mouthed the PLUSA's from one end of that thread to the other. As I told you at the time, I've never seen a proprietor trash patrons that way, and it was not a heat-of-the-moment type of thing. If you had simply come on the site and said you wanted to take it in a new direction, who would have objected? But that's not what you did, is it? Moreover, you come back here and still drop some hints of venom (missing most of us?).

Good luck to you. Hope the site continues to do well.

"I had a teddy bear as a child (until the woman staying with us while my parents were away threw Shlumpy in the trash) "

I think this is the FOURTH TIME I've heard this story.

More often than not, people have just one dog in NYC. Two 50lbs dogs are a lot to have in an apartment. Plus, Cgar can make a deal with the other woman who's interested and maybe get a date out of it too.

OK, I'm beat (homo) and need to go to bed.

Actually, jb, Biff's and my friends who live in my building have 3 dogs! And for a number of years, I had the CDog and a Samoyed when I lived on Carroll Street. I was looking for only 1 dog, but I'm thinking they're brothers and so good together, so why not.

CGar;

My dog was a refugee from the South too. She was owned by a family that had to give her up after the BP oil spill. They lost their jobs, and brought her to a shelter. It was a kill shelter, however, and North Shore rescued her from there.

You won't go wrong with North Shore. They're great.

benson, I was all set to adopt from North Shore last Saturday, but they literally ran out of dogs for adoption! So, I emailed Lab rescue groups through Petfinder.com.

Well clearly I dont know anything about dogs, but I guess I'm saying it probably can't hurt to hold out a little longer and end up with just one if that's what you really want. Good luck!

"clearly I dont know anything about dogs" -- try 'christiansingles' , 'jewdate', craigslist or whatever. guaranteed you'll find the one of your dreams.

jessi, the adoption process and application/contract you have to sign is designed to avoid someone doing just that. There's a woman who wants to adopt one of them, but they prefer me as I expressed interest in both of them.

this is why i prefer getting dogs from random people that KNOW YOU. serious, making adopting a dog as hard as renting an apartment in NYC these days? fuck off.

after Duke is gone, i will most likely plather on about not wanting another dog, but i WILL get one. having to jump thru hoops just to adopt an animal that is not wanted? wtf? credit check, apt check, criminal check, etc etc? go fuck yourselves. most people who pass all of those dont adopt dogs anyway, DUH.

im a loving, caring person, who is willing to spend x and y amounts of money on a dog and you are telling me i can't do that? stupid and backwards. im gonna go apeshit if in a few years i run into trouble adopting a dog outright.

Last night PLUSAs were very funny. I was exhausted from the day and fell asleep early. And woke up to take a peek at what was said but was too late. I felt that my two cents weren't needed anyway. You all said it so well. Lech the most colorfully, Benson, the most logically and Jessi....brilliant question.
