I just swept the steps. Some things just need to be done "good enough". That blue eyed white cat is probably deaf. White fur + blue eyes is almost always deaf. Not Aldo, (he had greenish yellow eyes) but Pippie had blue eyes and was deaf as a door knob. I found out that it is almost always true.

My neighbor came upon a group of them "bubble feeding." Look for a video of it on youtube.

Oh lord, you really are a jackass of the first order, benson. The memorial is on Sunday morning. Is he supposed to sit in a straight-backed chair in a black suit for the entire weekend? Or is it possible that it might be IMPORTANT to spend time with the living family who he doesn't see very often and very generously took him out sailing? Your inappropriate jealousy and nastiness apparently know no bounds.

After I retire, I'm going to meet up with my friends Kurt & Katie somewhere in the world. Katie was a Montgomery Securities broker for many years and retired the day after 9-11. They have a 74' sailboat that Kurt designed. They have homes in Alameida and New Zealand, both on the water. I want to fly somewhere and do some sailing with them. Last year they sailed through the Strait of Hormuz into the Mediterranean.

"in the Azores"

The Azores are great. I once stopped there during a sea trial. At that time (20 years ago) it was like stepping back in time (except for one island that had a US Navy base on it, which was much more up-to-date). We ate in a restaurant that was on a farm in the countryside, and it was great. It cost us a pittance, too.

Not sure if things have changed since then.

I just remembered a funny memory from my stop in the Azores. We docked in a small, traditional town (I can't remember the name of it) after having been at sea for about 4 weeks. I went to dinner with the captain and we strolled around the town. While doing that, we saw a cab with the crew (it was a small ship; there were only like 4 crew members), speeding and zig-zagging around town looking for a brothel, any brothel. They failed.

I just googled to see if the ship for that mid-Atlantic sea trial still exists. Apparently not. It was called the GW Pierce, and it was owned by an outfit called Tracor Marine which was based in Florida. It was really not an appropriate ship for oceanic vogages, but we used it because it what was available, and we had to get the mission done before winter set in.

It was what is called a "mud boat", which is used by the oil industry in the Gulf to pump in a cement mixture (called "mud") as a lining for the wells. The main reason it was ill-suited was that it was a flat-bottomed boat, and therefore "slapped" against the waves. After 7 weeks of being on that boat with a constant pounding against the waves, my back was out of kilter for months.

Later.

I just went out with the car to do errands and to shop. I am back to my drycleaner in the Heights (my buddy Rolando sold the dry cleaners over here) and to go to Fairway to get a few bargains. I was supposed to meet my friend who was going to drive to the Met on the upper east from Washington Heights, then we would go to dinner then he would drive me home. Ain't gonna happen. It is going to be slick tonight. So I think we are going to watch the SC primaries (there is NOBODY more of a politics junkie than him).

DCB;

Not sure I understand your question. If by "sails" you mean how many times did I go out to sea (for work), I'd estimate about 20. It was great. I still miss it. Sure beat being behind a desk. Most of the guys in my outfit didn't want it, because it meant weeks away from home. So, I constantly raised my hand and volunteered for it.

Weeks away from home????

I discovered that traveling for work was fun and I was able to go a lot of places I probably wouldn't have otherwise. BUT, I did notice that if it started sliding over 1/3 of my life, my attitude changed. (one place was 50%). I felt tired, lousey, my stomach was messed up, I started feeling disconnected from home and my personal life started falling apart. People would think my life was a big vacation when I LONGED to be home.

One of the great resources this country has, largely unknown to the general public, is a group of folks whom I'll call "engineering/military contractors". They are a group of folks who do overseas contracting for the US military and engineering/exploration companies. When I used to go to sea I would rub shoulders with them. They are generally hard-working, hard-drinking and hard playing good old boys. They very much have a "can-do" attitude. They often spend years outside the US.

The movie "Apollo 13" offered a glimpse into this world.

i am totally on the fence with the whole internet piracy thing. i dont think the internet should be censored in any way however. but piracy is rampant and kinda sucks for a lot of people. it makes video games, well, kinda suck these days unless they cater to a super population of people. im kinda blah on the music aspect of it and when it comes to porn, well, i used to support pornstars, but fuck no, not no more. if porn stars and their producers wanna make money they can set up fuck dates for money with their fans if they want.

i dont like movies and and television shows getting ripped off tho. but then again im not about to drop 14 bux to see a stupid movie then have to pay 45 dollars for a small popcorn anyway.

i work in an industry where piracy actually is kinda rampant. luckily their are lawyers on board and lookout people to sue their asses.

Yes, if you put the noodles in just before you are eating it, the noodles don't get mushy.

Also, my soup always tasted great, but the broth wasn't clear. I discovered that the key to keeping the broth a clear yellow was never allowing it to boil, only simmer and to constantly skim the "stuff" from the top.

I have some page links that compares webhosts. I'll dig it up but Fatcow is number 2 on it. So check them out. And the other question is how much of the site building will you do? I want to be able to do the site building myself using the tools and templates the host provides. So ease of use is important.
This site promotes a service mostly requiring some personal inter-action, so commerce may not play a big role, at least initially. It probably wont be too complicated, but it should be able to imbed video, photographs and multiple images.
For now I'll be happy to just have the site hang out so people who are interested can go and see what is available.

Cobble, as a proponent of free markets I agree with you about subsidies and bailouts.
I don't agree with you about the tax code. US corporations pay the highest taxes in the developed world, which is one reason so many of them have moved operations overseas.
One of the most damaging subsidies is the requirement under Obama that every man woman and child must be covered by private Health Insurance. This gives them a license to steal and if allowed to continue it will cripple our health care system within a few years.
Mrs DCB is already seeing this happen, as one insurance company is on their 25th unpaid claim to her for no ostensible reason.
January 22, 2012 9:44 AM - dibs
"the Republicans have been completely obstructive"

It takes two to negotiate. The Democrats have been pigheaded.

There was a shellacking for a reason; and that was after the republicans became "obstructive." The people spoke.

However, that doesn't make Newty any less of a hypocrite. And the constant drum beat of his "mea culpa" is inflammatory and aggravating. It's the "do as I say, not as I do" mentality. He was more than happy to try to get Clinton tossed out for his philandering.
January 22, 2012 9:54 AM - dibs
The bailouts were necessary. They were actually initiated by Bush. If they hadn't happened, the economy would have collapsed. You have no idea. Period.

Well, you're wrong. I do have an idea about how bad things might have been. I read more than you think, DIBS. I'm NOT saying it only benefitted the wealthy. It's the hypocrisy of accepting on the one hand that the govt had to step in to save the country — which in reality is "Socialism" — which was necessary as the corporations failed, while rejecting "Socialism" as some evil thing when we are STEEPED in it already. All this false hue & cry is just posturing and not based in reality.

And by the way, re: tax code, I didn't bring up GE, so don't assume that's where I was going.

"I cannot even to begin to fathom "Newt for President". He's a proven bigot, a hypocrite, a bully, and a liar, "

Truer words were never spoken. Newt would make the worst president in the history of the office. He's totally unfit. And that opinion has nothing to do with his merry-go-round marriages.

He would never team up with West. He really despises black people, and doesn't get along with anyone who could possibly upstage him in the intellectual department. Plus, he doesn't need him. West would not bring any new votes to the party, or bring any states or new constituencies to vote for a Republican ticket.

Newt also scares mainstream Republicans. They are not going to let him have the ticket. It will be Romney.
January 22, 2012 10:23 AM - dibs
It has nothing to do with "Socialism." It was a crisis. Calling it "socialism" is just a further indication that you don't understand the background and the likely outcome of not doing it. Calling it socialism is the same as if I called social security "socialism which, despite the eponymous connection, is not.

Plus, his "outrage" at the debate was as staged as a WWF tag team meet. He knew somebody would ask him about his ex-wife's allegations. He may have not known who it would be, and the CNN reporter was really stupid in how he did it, but there was no way a major news story about a presidential candidate was not going to come up in a debate on the same day. His great moral umbrage was ready to go, and he played the crowd like a violin. "It's clear that those leaders certainly believe they have Obama wrapped around their fingers. A leader who is outspoken with some balls will scare these nutjobs back into their caves."

Obama wrapped around their fingers - they would be wrong. Ask Osama Bin Laden.

The arrogance in thinking that the Iranians and the North Koreans are bumpkins in caves is what is wrong with Republican thinking on foreign policy in the first place. That's what happened to Bush with Iraq, in thinking that we could go in there, wipe them out, or intimidate them into surrender with our military superiority, and be done in time for a cocktail in the evening. And the Afghani people have successfully worn down every army that's been there since the Romans and Alexander the Great. The Soviets couldn't conquer them, and they don't care about collateral damage. We didn't stand a chance, which has become patently obvious, and we should pack up and get out.

The last thing this country needs to do is get involved in Iran or North Korea, two places we have no clue about how to win a war in, with 2 vastly different kinds of situations. You may want to remember that we did NOT win the Korean War. It was a negotiated truce, as neither side could win. Going to war in Iran could start a war with the entire Middle East. "Bombing them back to the caves", is at the height of national stupidity and arrogance, and a situatation I do not want someone like Newt Gingrich in control of.

Pete. I'd have to know more about it. You have to do a present value calculation of the 2023-2030 payouts. Getting a 5,5% return for 7 years that starts 11 years from NOW is very suspect. I can earn well over 5.5% in dividend yields in some VERY blue chip stocks right now, not have to wait 11 years for them. I bet this is a real rip off but I really need to see all the details.

It's the fact that the payouts don't start for 11 years that is crazy. I bet even if you buy 30 year treasuries that yield only 3% you would have more money in 2030 than you would with that plan, but I'd have to do the math.
January 22, 2012 11:24 AM - petebklyn
I guess you got 1st and 2nd place
January 22, 2012 11:25 AM - dibs
It all has to do with the "time value of money." If you can earn 3 % now for 16 years forward, that is likley more valuable to you than 5.5% that starts in 11 years and only runs for 7 years.

Pete, I bookmarked the site but I can't say I'll look at it in any detail until after I retire and have time to. I just want to let you know that most CFPs will be able to explain to you why each and every annuity is ill suited to you from an economic standpoint ( and very suited to the insurance company who is issuing it and making $$$ off of it).

If you can believe that the issuee is going to make more money off any individual annuity than the issuer then I have a bridge nearby to sell you.

And, the commissions to the people who sell them are HUGE.

They should get impartial financial advice on these from a CFP. If they have one and he is selling them this then he is not impartial and he's getting a big fee.

And yes, I understand that most people don't understand the naunces of these but if they took the time to learn (it's basic math and compound interest calculations) they would be able to analyze each one.

There should be a basic course in this that each and every retiree must take. It's not like they won't have the time to learn.

Given the relatively low level of the stock market in terms of valuation, there has rarely been a time when so many companies with such strong histories of raising dividends can be purchased at such strong yields. Only 2009 was better.

Benson, Dan Rather and crew were just making sh*t up. "Fake but accurate" news. Nobody was making anything up this time around.

If Gingrich is the nominee we can expect to hear Obama talk a lot about being a family man.

"If Gingrich is the nominee we can expect to hear Obama talk a lot about being a family man."

Yet again avoiding the issues and proposing "Change you can believe in"

Fool me once, shame on you.......
January 22, 2012 2:16 PM - rf
The family man thing didn't work very well for Mitt, at least not in SC. But I bet Obama's PACs will tell that story!

I think there will be plenty of Republican women like Donatella who would never vote for Newt. And then there are the Democrats and independents who also would never vote for Newt! I'm looking forward to hearing from the Republicans who served in Congress with him. There was some noise from them when he started surging again in Iowa; let's see what happens.

"Nobody was making anything up this time around. "

Oh really, Six? Tell me, what was the "news" that was relevant to the public in the ex-wife "story". Newt had already acknowledged the affairs. He had already acknowledged that he was a poor husband to his first two wives (it's on his website, if you want to go look), and that he was responsible for the break-up and pain he had caused them. He has said that he is ashamed of his behavior at the time, and has sought redemption.

What further information did the public now need to know? How did a "he-said-she said" story about the details of the marital wreckage serve the public?

Folks recognized the ABC story for what it was: a hit piece that had no relevance to the presidential campaign.

Benson, I didn't say anything about whether the story is relevant or irrelevant. I just said nobody in the media invented a story, complete with fake documents, like was done in 2004.

Rf, if Gingrich is the nominee, all those Republican politicians who said he's unfit to be President will fall all over themselves to say how he's a changed man, they were wrong, etc. Democrats would do the same if the shoe were on the other foot. They want their party to win, and there are Cabinet positions to be doled out, etc.
January 22, 2012 2:22 PM - bxgrl
With a pretentious, self righteous prig like Newt, I think the story is totally relevant. He wants to talk about his new found religious righteousness and push his so-called family values. I can't tell if he's running for President or stand up comic.
January 22, 2012 2:22 PM - MontroseMorris
No one thought they were going to put a nail in Newt's coffin over his ex-wives. It's not exactly breaking news, and the stories about how he did it are also quite old. The public has stated, through voting, polls and any other way you want to slice it, that they do not think a person's personal life, no matter how badly they've bolloxed it, is the stuff of ineligibility for high office. As it should be.

This race will not be about what a rat Newt is to his exes. He can puff up all he wants in righteous indignation, but it's just theater. Obama could wipe him up with a wet rag in any debate on real policy issues.

Newt is not as smart as he thinks he is. This is a guy who was forced from the Speaker's chair by members of his own party, most importantly and ironically, John Boehner, chief among them. He's a loose cannon.

Yeah, right. I guess presiding over, and leading the pitchfork brigade over an unpopular, and failed attempt to have Clinton impeached, while fending off his own ethics charges had nothing to do with it. Neither did the recent election in 1998, which resulted in the Republicans loosing the majority that they had crowed over, and Newt had crowned himself king of, in 94. Talk about the foggy memory of history past.

January 22, 2012 2:39 PM - dibs
Eddie Vo was a small world story.

It was a UA flight from HK to Tokyo. We werre the only 2 people in the rear (nh) of the 747 upper deck. We looked at each other and there was a recognition. I went over and sat next to him after we took off and we chatted. i figured out that many years ago I met him in SF and he took me home in his TR7. It was the TR7 that I remembered and then I remembered his name.

1996 - 1998 is ancient history? Only because you don't like the results.

By the way, a true shellacking would have been the loss of both houses by a sizable majority. That did not happen. It was a usual mid-term election in a turbulent economic time, and most of the seats lost by Democrats were weakly held to begin with. All of which is irrelevant. The presidential race is the big show. Whether people hold their noses and vote for Obama, or proudly walk in and vote for him, he will win. Newt will be hard pressed to win the nomination, and he would not win the general election.

I would caution folks about making predictions concerning elections. As we have just seen, a week is a lifetime in politics - things can change dramatically.

By the way, I hear that ABC is working on a fresh new story. Newt's former dog walker claims that he's not a very nice man. Now THAT is news. It's so much better than examining why no one - including Jon Corzine - has been charged with the loss of $1.2 Billion entrusted to them.

DIBS, I am taking my brother to Mt. Sinai tomorrow morning at 5:30 to have a small nodule removed from one lung. If all goes well he will be out of the hospital after one night. Then they have to decide about the 5 nodules in the other lung. All nodules are very small and it's possible that he will be ok. But of course he is totally freaked out and it's been a rough week for all of us. He wants them to give him a prognosis but I don't think they have enough info to predict anything yet. We took his 26-yr-old daughter to the airport this morning after a 10-day visit from L.A. and an hour ago I dropped him off at the F trainso he can hang out in Manhattan this afternoon with some friends. He's been staying with us but will go to my aunt's in CT after surgery to recuperate. Thanks for asking.
