I just swept the steps. Some things just need to be done "good enough". That blue eyed white cat is probably deaf. White fur + blue eyes is almost always deaf. Not Aldo, (he had greenish yellow eyes) but Pippie had blue eyes and was deaf as a door knob. I found out that it is almost always true.
I can't find my snow shovel. It is probably under the crap under the steps. Maybe I can hire the kid to sort out that mess. I can't do it with one hand (grrr.......whine)
It was funny, he told me his brother said there are not usually so many dolphins by the mouth of the harbor, but for some reason there were A LOT of them there yesterday. He also saw some kind of seals!
Yes, cobble. it's been a few banner years for whale watching. This year there were even some blue whales!!! I have seen whales off the beach about 200 yards.
My neighbor came upon a group of them "bubble feeding." Look for a video of it on youtube.
Jokes of the proper kind, properly told, can do more to enlighten questions of politics, philosophy, and literature than any number of dull arguments. -Isaac Asimov, scientist and writer (1920-92)
"I thought he was in mourning? Was he at least dressed in a black suit while sailing?"
Oh lord, you really are a jackass of the first order, benson. The memorial is on Sunday morning. Is he supposed to sit in a straight-backed chair in a black suit for the entire weekend? Or is it possible that it might be IMPORTANT to spend time with the living family who he doesn't see very often and very generously took him out sailing? Your inappropriate jealousy and nastiness apparently know no bounds.
After I retire, I'm going to meet up with my friends Kurt & Katie somewhere in the world. Katie was a Montgomery Securities broker for many years and retired the day after 9-11. They have a 74' sailboat that Kurt designed. They have homes in Alameida and New Zealand, both on the water. I want to fly somewhere and do some sailing with them. Last year they sailed through the Strait of Hormuz into the Mediterranean.
That sounds really great, DIBS! If we ever have any money to do similar, I'd love to do a long sailing trip with BH. He would LOVE LOVE LOVE it. He's a "fish", being on or near the water is very soothing/rejuvenating for him.
The weatherman had the 2 inches of snow panic on the news last night. I couldn't tell if I should just go salt the steps or prepare for the Apocalypse.
;Meanwhile ACC is bringing me a cat I'm fostering. Poor thing was dumped by his owner- he's 20 years old. Saw the pic on FB and couldn't stop myself. Who dumps a 20 year old cat?!
I know. I figure at 20 he doesn't have a lot of time left and he looked so terrified. Even if it's only for a month or 2, I couldn't bear the thought of him ending his life like that.
"oh im SURE no horrific tragedies would come out of THAT."
LOL! Sailing requires excellent teamwork and cooperation. I'm guessing most of the teamwork and cooperation would involve pouring drinks and taking turns tossing anyone we don't like in the moment overboard! : P
ha. someone took me out on a boat sailing once and i remember being like ugh you expect me to hold this stupid rope? i remember being told to hang on hard to some giant rope. wasnt my idea of fun. the only other time i was on a boat was in cape cod (provineton whale watching) and my aunt told me to be careful around the homos lol. that was actually a fun boat ride, the sailing ride where i had to hold onto a rope the whole time was stupid.
No, that goes into the Red Sea. You meant either the Suez Canal or Straits of Gibraltar (but I kind of like the ancient Greek name, the Pillars of Hercules).
The Azores are great. I once stopped there during a sea trial. At that time (20 years ago) it was like stepping back in time (except for one island that had a US Navy base on it, which was much more up-to-date). We ate in a restaurant that was on a farm in the countryside, and it was great. It cost us a pittance, too.
I just remembered a funny memory from my stop in the Azores. We docked in a small, traditional town (I can't remember the name of it) after having been at sea for about 4 weeks. I went to dinner with the captain and we strolled around the town. While doing that, we saw a cab with the crew (it was a small ship; there were only like 4 crew members), speeding and zig-zagging around town looking for a brothel, any brothel. They failed.
I just googled to see if the ship for that mid-Atlantic sea trial still exists. Apparently not. It was called the GW Pierce, and it was owned by an outfit called Tracor Marine which was based in Florida. It was really not an appropriate ship for oceanic vogages, but we used it because it what was available, and we had to get the mission done before winter set in.
It was what is called a "mud boat", which is used by the oil industry in the Gulf to pump in a cement mixture (called "mud") as a lining for the wells. The main reason it was ill-suited was that it was a flat-bottomed boat, and therefore "slapped" against the waves. After 7 weeks of being on that boat with a constant pounding against the waves, my back was out of kilter for months.
I just went out with the car to do errands and to shop. I am back to my drycleaner in the Heights (my buddy Rolando sold the dry cleaners over here) and to go to Fairway to get a few bargains. I was supposed to meet my friend who was going to drive to the Met on the upper east from Washington Heights, then we would go to dinner then he would drive me home. Ain't gonna happen. It is going to be slick tonight. So I think we are going to watch the SC primaries (there is NOBODY more of a politics junkie than him).
"The main reason it was ill-suited was that it was a flat-bottomed boat, and therefore "slapped" against the waves. After 7 weeks of being on that boat with a constant pounding against the waves, my back was out of kilter for months."
Not sure I understand your question. If by "sails" you mean how many times did I go out to sea (for work), I'd estimate about 20. It was great. I still miss it. Sure beat being behind a desk. Most of the guys in my outfit didn't want it, because it meant weeks away from home. So, I constantly raised my hand and volunteered for it.
You are RIGHT, Ms. Snappy!!! For me, seeing the results would be fine. But just hearing a running commentary of this man's commentary should be entertaining enough.
Plus I am going to eat China Latina comida up in the hood with him. That'll be fun.
I discovered that traveling for work was fun and I was able to go a lot of places I probably wouldn't have otherwise. BUT, I did notice that if it started sliding over 1/3 of my life, my attitude changed. (one place was 50%). I felt tired, lousey, my stomach was messed up, I started feeling disconnected from home and my personal life started falling apart. People would think my life was a big vacation when I LONGED to be home.
One of the great resources this country has, largely unknown to the general public, is a group of folks whom I'll call "engineering/military contractors". They are a group of folks who do overseas contracting for the US military and engineering/exploration companies. When I used to go to sea I would rub shoulders with them. They are generally hard-working, hard-drinking and hard playing good old boys. They very much have a "can-do" attitude. They often spend years outside the US.
The movie "Apollo 13" offered a glimpse into this world.
i am totally on the fence with the whole internet piracy thing. i dont think the internet should be censored in any way however. but piracy is rampant and kinda sucks for a lot of people. it makes video games, well, kinda suck these days unless they cater to a super population of people. im kinda blah on the music aspect of it and when it comes to porn, well, i used to support pornstars, but fuck no, not no more. if porn stars and their producers wanna make money they can set up fuck dates for money with their fans if they want.
i dont like movies and and television shows getting ripped off tho. but then again im not about to drop 14 bux to see a stupid movie then have to pay 45 dollars for a small popcorn anyway.
i work in an industry where piracy actually is kinda rampant. luckily their are lawyers on board and lookout people to sue their asses.
"Just went to the supermarket to get all the fixins for chicken noodle soup"
Sounds very JEW-ish.
When I lived on the UES, my Jewish next door neighbor became my good friend. She was always over and was a bit like Kramer, bursting in all the time. Once I was making chicken soup and she says "The house smells JEWISH!!!!" Jeez, since when do the Jews get dibs on chicken soup smell!!!??!!!
dibs - Don't put the noodles in the broth except what you're eating today. Freeze the rest. Even reduce it a lot & store it in ice cube trays to use as stock. Really good!!
Just in from shovelling for myself & neighbor. Easy except where it's been trod on. Much easier to clear bluestone than aggregate - some snows are the exact opposite.
Yes, if you put the noodles in just before you are eating it, the noodles don't get mushy.
Also, my soup always tasted great, but the broth wasn't clear. I discovered that the key to keeping the broth a clear yellow was never allowing it to boil, only simmer and to constantly skim the "stuff" from the top.
Oh and when you're soaking wet and not wearing much clothing and you stop running and it's 23 degrees you get FUCKING COLD. Took a long, long hot shower and put on long underwear when I got home.

i thought everyone has a starter marriage these days, then a i gotta get my monies marriage, and then a final marriage where you're rich from the second marriage and sexually experienced in the sack from the starter marriage. am i viewing how the str8's do it these days? it seems about right.
i think running for sport fucks with the basic fight or flight instinct. i ran once on purpose. i ran from chelsea to the LES (obviously not VERY far) and the whole time i was doing it my mind was racing a gazillion miles a minute, it did not feel exercise, it felt more like that movie run lola run, or like i was running away from freddy krueger or something. no thanks.
Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes! I ended up cancelling my plans to go to Mass due to road conditions. Having dinner at home with some good friends tonight.
Had fun running this morning - here I am about halfway through the race.
Been having a relaxing day with my son doing a bit of playing in the snow, and a lot of building a castle out of Legos while Wendy is in meetings all day.
I'm experimenting today. I made a blueberry & apple pie and I put some dried cherries in it. I hope the dried cherries aren't too chewy. I'm kind of hoping they plump up a bit from the juices of the apples after I macerated them. Definitely a perfect day for baking/cooking.
I know better than to put the noodles in now. Just cooked the chicken and added all the vegs to the cold stock. Will portion it out now.
Cobble we have an apple pie on our counter here that aneighbor brought over with blueberries. I haven't had it yet. I'm chary of gilding the lily and that sort of thing.
We went out for burgers at Pub & Kitchen. One was $14 and the other was $18. Had 2 bloody marys there and thentwo more at Dirty franks and now i'm bloated and have gas and heartburn. But This Old House is on so life is good
my front tooth is KILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLING me. OWWWWWWW. sorry, i hate when people complain and try not to complain much, but i cant hold it in right now. shit hurts! ive never had tooth pain in the front teeth before, it's always been in the back. tho i think back tooth pain hurts more, this is just moreso annoying for some reason. i used a different dentist than i normally do (cuz it was emergency when the cap fell out that time) and i regret it now. i dont think he did such a good job. plus my other dentist molded my front two front teeth when they broke to look great like normal teeth. this guy made the tooth square with annoying jagged edge and completely crooked :-/ i know he did it on purpose thinking it would make me get a whole new crown or implant sooner, my regular dentist knows im a tad on the destitute side and acts accordingly.
i was doing multiple errands today back and forth back and forth and i kept looking in restaurant windows and this evening most were empty but again that stupid al di la place was PACKED. why is that place always packed!? honestly, it looked like an overcrowded candlelit daycare center all up in there. gross.

Question to Scott, Bxgrl and any other web savvy PlusA's:
I am thinking of developing a website for a personal small (side) business.
Is iPage any good?
Any better ideas?
Thx
rob - My dds will be open tomorrow (Sunday) if you want to phone. He's excellent & not at all expensive &, at the very least, could give you relief until you can get to your own. I'm not sure which office he works out of on Sundays, Slope or Coney Island (but it's worth the trip there if that's it - I've trekked there several times.) Slope is 718 965 9823 & is at corner of 9th St. & 6th Av. - just down on 6th a bit. C.I. phone is 718 996 7700. His name is Nathaniel Sasson. Tell him I gave you his name.
thanks arkady, it's definitely not a dental emergency exactly. it's just that my tooth is very sensitive... im going to schedule an appointment in a few weeks. a lot of times when people get chips it winds up being sensitive to hot and cold, which isnt exactly anything bad per se. but will eventually need further work.
I've never used iPage. I assume that is an Apple product, and I don't use anything by them.
There are a ton of options for creating web pages - it all depends on what you want to do, how much technical skills you have, and how much you want to spend.
Today certainly makes the primaries more interesting.
Before tonight I thought Florida would be close, with the next month (Nevada, Maine, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Arizona, Michigan, Washington) being all Romney.
I still think the calendar favors Romney, but Gingrich has the momentum to keep thinks fun.
If Newt's campaign takes off, his utter drubbing of CNN's John King at the last debate will be marked as the take-off point. Anyone who doubts that such moments could propel a candidate should know that this famous one minute in history vaulted Ronald Reagan past his contenders (you can briefly see George Bush I in it).
DCB- depends on what kid of site you're looking to build- informational, commerce, interactive. How complicated do ou need it to be?There's a lot of webhosts out there. I have some page links that compares webhosts. I'll dig it up but Fatcow is number 2 on it. So check them out. And the other question is how much of the site building will you do? And in what program. Do you want to be able to make any changes yourself or pay someone else to do it? I'll post the other links tomorrow.
Thanks Bxgrl.
I want to be able to do the site building myself using the tools and templates the host provides. So ease of use is important.
This site promotes a service mostly requiring some personal inter-action, so commerce may not play a big role, at least initially. It probably wont be too complicated, but it should be able to imbed video, photographs and multiple images.
For now I'll be happy to just have the site hang out so people who are interested can go and see what is available.
Why would I not say it? I consider Newt a better choice than Obama, thus I would support him if he were the Republican candidate, even though I would much rather have Romney get the nod.
"OMG! With 40% of the vote. What is going on in this country!"
they woke up and realized we can't have 4 more years of this socialist bullshit. They want a president with balls who will stand up. Obama can't even negotiate himself through Congress
Then maybe this "socialist bullshit" shouldn't be supporting so many corporations in this country via the bailouts, subsidies and the tax code!
I cannot even to begin to fathom "Newt for President". He's a proven bigot, a hypocrite, a bully, and a liar, not to mention being a republican! : P
There's a big difference between the narrow-minded defiant posturing Newt does and actually having broad-minded constructive ideas. And you're 100% wrong about Congress, the Republicans have been completely obstructive, not to mention the extreme abuse of filibustering.
Oh, and GM. How was the apple/blueberry pie? Mine was great, the dried cherries did indeed plump up. I'll be having some for breakfast shortly.
Cobble, as a proponent of free markets I agree with you about subsidies and bailouts.
I don't agree with you about the tax code. US corporations pay the highest taxes in the developed world, which is one reason so many of them have moved operations overseas.
One of the most damaging subsidies is the requirement under Obama that every man woman and child must be covered by private Health Insurance. This gives them a license to steal and if allowed to continue it will cripple our health care system within a few years.
Mrs DCB is already seeing this happen, as one insurance company is on their 25th unpaid claim to her for no ostensible reason.
DIBS, I don't entirely disagree with Newt on the specific point that the negative campaigning is hurtful in terms of encouraging good people to get into politics in this country. However, that doesn't make Newty any less of a hypocrite. And the constant drum beat of his "mea culpa" is inflammatory and aggravating. It's the "do as I say, not as I do" mentality. He was more than happy to try to get Clinton tossed out for his philandering.
The bailouts were necessary. They were actually initiated by Bush. If they hadn't happened, the economy would have collapsed. You have no idea. Period.
Subsidies are part of the tax code and need to be voted on or off. DCB is right about US corporate tax rates.
You can't sit there and tell me that all of the Dems would not have responded similarly if there was a Republican President "filandering." Reality check.
They pay them when the accounting shows that they must. If they have tax loss carryforwards, they work against paying taxes. Many companies had huge losses in 2009.
Don't bring up GE. You don't know what you are talking about as far as their accounting.
"The bailouts were necessary. They were actually initiated by Bush. If they hadn't happened, the economy would have collapsed. You have no idea. Period."
I do have an idea, thank you very much. It's "Socialism" for the rich!
"I do have an idea, thank you very much. It's "Socialism" for the rich!"
Probably the singular dumbest thing you've ever said. Like I said, you have no idea how bad things would be if those banks, GM, AIG all crashed. It was bad enough that they let lehman go. Remember that???? Understand now????
Saying that it only benefitted the wealthy is really stupid.
"You can't sit there and tell me that all of the Dems would not have responded similarly if there was a Republican President "filandering." Reality check."
No, I won't, but you have to agree that Newty really should have just taken a pass, and sat the f*ck down! : P
Cobbble, continuing to bring up Newt 's infidelity is exactly the sort of discpicable shit that he's talking about. You and the liberal media really need to let it go. it's just making you look foolish, like he pointed out, got a standing ovation for and surged ahead in the polls.
Please, make an effort to focus on parts of his platform and tell us why you disagree with them instead of falling back on the infidelity. it's getting old and really makes those who do it look foolish.
Well, you're wrong. I do have an idea about how bad things might have been. I read more than you think, DIBS. I'm NOT saying it only benefitted the wealthy. It's the hypocrisy of accepting on the one hand that the govt had to step in to save the country — which in reality is "Socialism" — which was necessary as the corporations failed, while rejecting "Socialism" as some evil thing when we are STEEPED in it already. All this false hue & cry is just posturing and not based in reality.
And by the way, re: tax code, I didn't bring up GE, so don't assume that's where I was going.
"I cannot even to begin to fathom "Newt for President". He's a proven bigot, a hypocrite, a bully, and a liar, "
Truer words were never spoken. Newt would make the worst president in the history of the office. He's totally unfit. And that opinion has nothing to do with his merry-go-round marriages.
He would never team up with West. He really despises black people, and doesn't get along with anyone who could possibly upstage him in the intellectual department. Plus, he doesn't need him. West would not bring any new votes to the party, or bring any states or new constituencies to vote for a Republican ticket.
Newt also scares mainstream Republicans. They are not going to let him have the ticket. It will be Romney.
It has nothing to do with "Socialism." It was a crisis. Calling it "socialism" is just a further indication that you don't understand the background and the likely outcome of not doing it. Calling it socialism is the same as if I called social security "socialism which, despite the eponymous connection, is not.
clinton lovers could care less about newt's infidelities. It is the hyprocrisy of skewering clinton while his own personal behavior was abhorant. Was a pure calculated political prosecution - with 'the lie' as the technicality so they could publish the dirt titillating stuff.
but I'm not a clinton lover. He got rid of that glass seagull. Was such a beautiful bird. big cause of problems we are in today.
Which is worse, skewering Clinton while cheating in your own marriage or being President of the United States and telling an outright lie about doing it yourself???
"clinton lovers could care less about newt's infidelities. It is the hyprocrisy of skewering clinton while his own personal behavior was abhorant."
Exactly.
Plus, his "outrage" at the debate was as staged as a WWF tag team meet. He knew somebody would ask him about his ex-wife's allegations. He may have not known who it would be, and the CNN reporter was really stupid in how he did it, but there was no way a major news story about a presidential candidate was not going to come up in a debate on the same day. His great moral umbrage was ready to go, and he played the crowd like a violin. That crap would not have had the same effect in a Republican debate in New Hampshire, or Arizona, or anywhere but in the South, which likes him anyway. He couldn't have asked for a better audience to perform to.
"Which is worse, skewering Clinton while cheating in your own marriage or being President of the United States and telling an outright lie about doing it yourself???"
So it DOES matter, then DIBS? You can't have it both ways. Either extra-maritial dalliances matter for everyone, or they matter for no one. You can't decide depending on which side of the political spectrum you happen to be in.
Extra-marital dalliances have nothing to do with the performance of your job.
I never blamed Clinton for doing it. I bet every President of the US (except Carter) got some sort of sex in the Oval Office. It would be #1 on anyone's "Bucket list."
"Extra-marital dalliances have nothing to do with the performance of your job.'
Agreed. It's not Newt's affairs that bother people, it's the hypocrisy of pontificating about it, and leading the pitchfork and torches parade to the Clinton impeachment, while doing the same thing himself. As nauseating as that is, it's not his worst fault. He's got plenty more.
I think at some point the "red button" may need to be pressed for Iran or North Korea. It's clear that those leaders certainly believe they have Obama wrapped around their fingers. A leader who is outspoken with some balls will scare these nutjobs back into their caves.
"It's clear that those leaders certainly believe they have Obama wrapped around their fingers. A leader who is outspoken with some balls will scare these nutjobs back into their caves."
Obama wrapped around their fingers - they would be wrong. Ask Osama Bin Laden.
The arrogance in thinking that the Iranians and the North Koreans are bumpkins in caves is what is wrong with Republican thinking on foreign policy in the first place. That's what happened to Bush with Iraq, in thinking that we could go in there, wipe them out, or intimidate them into surrender with our military superiority, and be done in time for a cocktail in the evening. And the Afghani people have successfully worn down every army that's been there since the Romans and Alexander the Great. The Soviets couldn't conquer them, and they don't care about collateral damage. We didn't stand a chance, which has become patently obvious, and we should pack up and get out.
The last thing this country needs to do is get involved in Iran or North Korea, two places we have no clue about how to win a war in, with 2 vastly different kinds of situations. You may want to remember that we did NOT win the Korean War. It was a negotiated truce, as neither side could win. Going to war in Iran could start a war with the entire Middle East. "Bombing them back to the caves", is at the height of national stupidity and arrogance, and a situatation I do not want someone like Newt Gingrich in control of.
"Wow, Cobble. Was that a surprise to people or is it par for the course with this woman?"
Well, I've just gotten bits and pieces so far...but...(Where is ENY when I need him...) apparently, at the dinner last night, the wife was referred to as *Eurotrash* by a very close friend of departed! Everyone is a little shocked, but apparently not surprised.
"Obama wrapped around their fingers - they would be wrong. Ask Osama Bin Laden."
Snort!
I'm into the 'Hollywood gossip' at the moment, Arkady! ; ) Man, this is really some story. I can't wait till BH gets home to tell me the whole story. He's going to call me later today, so I'll hear about who spoke at the memorial. His mom will be one of the 5 speaking.
Six, none of those "grandiose statement" could ever cause the damage that Obama inflicted on this country with his class warfare agenda against "millionaires and billionaires."
"cause the damage that Obama inflicted on this country with his class warfare agenda against "millionaires and billionaires." -- DQOTD award. (drama queen OTD).
"cause the damage that Obama inflicted on this country with his class warfare agenda against "millionaires and billionaires." -- DQOTD award. (drama queen OTD).
Pete. I'd have to know more about it. You have to do a present value calculation of the 2023-2030 payouts. Getting a 5,5% return for 7 years that starts 11 years from NOW is very suspect. I can earn well over 5.5% in dividend yields in some VERY blue chip stocks right now, not have to wait 11 years for them. I bet this is a real rip off but I really need to see all the details.
It's the fact that the payouts don't start for 11 years that is crazy. I bet even if you buy 30 year treasuries that yield only 3% you would have more money in 2030 than you would with that plan, but I'd have to do the math.
It all has to do with the "time value of money." If you can earn 3 % now for 16 years forward, that is likley more valuable to you than 5.5% that starts in 11 years and only runs for 7 years.
Six, Get this...there was no funeral! Wife had ashes shipped back east here to departed's siblings here in NYC. (per best friend at dinner last night...) She didn't even want the memorial to happen, had to have her arm twisted by big wigs/friends. This whole story just gets weirder and weirder...
Mornin' losers. I'm feeling super sleepy/lazy today. Eventually I'll check my lotto tickets to see if I'm rich. If you all hear a super loud howl and hear tales of glitter bombs exploding , you'll know I won :-)
first time I've read about these. Looks legit- not a scam. lots of them to choose from with different payout- I guess they are bought from insurance claims (lawsuits and lotteries).
This one cost 65K -- and they payout is approx $1700 monthly for 12 years. Person has no reason to leave money to heirs (darn, it would be me).
"That level of analysis at this point in our relationship with both Iran and N Korea is pointless. Simply making them think that we are more likely to lob missiles at them is all that is necessary."
Translation - I can't really argue with your statement, so I'll just call it pointless.
OK, that's it for me. Got things to do today. Right now, I'm sitting here freezing in front of the open oven, as I ran out of oil. They are supposed to deliver sometime today.
Cobble, that story seems to get weirder and weirder. Btw if you want a lot of stupid laws, look at the ones related to the scattering of human ashes:
http://www.ehow.com/how_2058998_dispose-cremation-ashes.html
DCB- check this website: http://www.webhostingreport.com/best-cheap-web-hosting.html
You can also try www.weebly.com which as probably the easiest site builder to use and their interface is also used by other webhosts who offer site building tools. I used them to build a site form my brother in law and it was so much easier to deal with than the other programs I use. And it's easier for him to deal with as someone with little web site experience. If you've got other questions, you can email me at bx2bklyn at g mail dot com
"There are hundreds of requests each year sent to National Parks for disposal of remains. Some parks will allow this, but not very many and you MUST have a permit. Of course this permit will cost you! The law forbids you to dispose of "human remains" on public land and inland bodies of water. This happens anyway, but if you are caught you will go to prison, straight to prison, and stay there a very long time."
DOUBTFUL!!!
This ios also a perfect example of how government has gotten too big and become intrusive way beyond what the constitution was written to include.
Only someone who is a career beauracrat could come up with this stuff.
Six, BH's birth/real dad's ashes were scattered in the Gulf Stream off the coast of Ft. Lauderdale last year. A friend of one of the step-brothers took us out to the Gulf Stream, and BH and his half brother scattered the ashes. It was really lovely, a very fine send off. (You really need a chart to map BH's family tree, many marriages, steps and halfs on both sides. Super complicated!)
Pete, I bookmarked the site but I can't say I'll look at it in any detail until after I retire and have time to. I just want to let you know that most CFPs will be able to explain to you why each and every annuity is ill suited to you from an economic standpoint ( and very suited to the insurance company who is issuing it and making $$$ off of it).
If you can believe that the issuee is going to make more money off any individual annuity than the issuer then I have a bridge nearby to sell you.
And, the commissions to the people who sell them are HUGE.
They should get impartial financial advice on these from a CFP. If they have one and he is selling them this then he is not impartial and he's getting a big fee.
And yes, I understand that most people don't understand the naunces of these but if they took the time to learn (it's basic math and compound interest calculations) they would be able to analyze each one.
There should be a basic course in this that each and every retiree must take. It's not like they won't have the time to learn.
Given the relatively low level of the stock market in terms of valuation, there has rarely been a time when so many companies with such strong histories of raising dividends can be purchased at such strong yields. Only 2009 was better.
And, the notion that retirees should have their money in bonds now is completely ridiculous given the rates. Never has this been a worse strategy at these rates. They have no idea how fast they will lose principal as rates begin to rise.
DIBS, Not that I have ANY money to invest, but are there courses one could take in such things? Or is it better to just use a CFP? And how would you 'vet' one?
For retirees or those approaching? Not full-on CFP certifications, etc.
Good gosh!! Me thinks some people doth protest so much. Hey, if Newt only appeals to "teabaggers", what's the problem? They are only a small bunch, right?? Relllaaaaxxxxx.
I need to view this Newt development the way I do horror movies. I need to follow the story but through the cracks between my fingers as I hold my hand up to the screen. I need to talk to a few Republican friends to burn off the top layer of emotionality. I freaking detest that guy.
You know what's so great about this story? CNN and ABC thought they were going to put the nail in Newt's candidacy with that ex-wife story. Newt deftly turned it around and ate their lunch, dinner, and the rest of the pantry. It completely backfired on them -landslide in SC. It's exactly analogous to how Dan Rather thought he was going to bury GWB with that fabricated National Guard story. By the way, how is Dan Rather these days??
Cobble, not sure. i will have a conversation about this with my life-long friend who does my taxes. He is a CFP and I would trust him. I'll let you know.
On another, MORE IMPORTANT MATTER, I just boarded an Amtrak train (earlier than I planned but this one is late, NIOT SURPRISING given it's gubment run) and I'm in the cafe car sitting across from a vbery hot and chatty asian guy.
The family man thing didn't work very well for Mitt, at least not in SC. But I bet Obama's PACs will tell that story!
I think there will be plenty of Republican women like Donatella who would never vote for Newt. And then there are the Democrats and independents who also would never vote for Newt! I'm looking forward to hearing from the Republicans who served in Congress with him. There was some noise from them when he started surging again in Iowa; let's see what happens.
"Nobody was making anything up this time around. "
Oh really, Six? Tell me, what was the "news" that was relevant to the public in the ex-wife "story". Newt had already acknowledged the affairs. He had already acknowledged that he was a poor husband to his first two wives (it's on his website, if you want to go look), and that he was responsible for the break-up and pain he had caused them. He has said that he is ashamed of his behavior at the time, and has sought redemption.
What further information did the public now need to know? How did a "he-said-she said" story about the details of the marital wreckage serve the public?
Folks recognized the ABC story for what it was: a hit piece that had no relevance to the presidential campaign.
Everyone seems to be forgetting that this "second wife" was c heating with him while he was married to his first wife. Convenient for you Dems to forget that while you castigate him.
Benson, I didn't say anything about whether the story is relevant or irrelevant. I just said nobody in the media invented a story, complete with fake documents, like was done in 2004.
Rf, if Gingrich is the nominee, all those Republican politicians who said he's unfit to be President will fall all over themselves to say how he's a changed man, they were wrong, etc. Democrats would do the same if the shoe were on the other foot. They want their party to win, and there are Cabinet positions to be doled out, etc.
With a pretentious, self righteous prig like Newt, I think the story is totally relevant. He wants to talk about his new found religious righteousness and push his so-called family values. I can't tell if he's running for President or stand up comic.
No one thought they were going to put a nail in Newt's coffin over his ex-wives. It's not exactly breaking news, and the stories about how he did it are also quite old. The public has stated, through voting, polls and any other way you want to slice it, that they do not think a person's personal life, no matter how badly they've bolloxed it, is the stuff of ineligibility for high office. As it should be.
This race will not be about what a rat Newt is to his exes. He can puff up all he wants in righteous indignation, but it's just theater. Obama could wipe him up with a wet rag in any debate on real policy issues.
Newt is not as smart as he thinks he is. This is a guy who was forced from the Speaker's chair by members of his own party, most importantly and ironically, John Boehner, chief among them. He's a loose cannon.
"With a pretentious, self righteous prig like Newt, I think the story is totally relevant. He wants to talk about his new found religious righteousness and push his so-called family values. I can't tell if he's running for President or stand up comic."
Well done, bxgrl. I'd expect nothing less than a personal attack from you!!! How about addressing his platform????
Well, whatever anybody thought about the 2nd wife interview, I saw it and basically it provided nothing new. He acted badly. We already knew that. It had the reverse effect. I don't care. I think he is a head case.
Ok, I am going to go and breathe deeply. I am seeing a play with a friend of mine in a little while. Mozart's sister. It is at the Kosciuszko Foundation on 65th near 5th. My friend says it is a stunning mansion.
Look I admit I am at the level of emotional reaction - I guess I can't define accurately "head case" so I can't refute dib's rebuttal that Obama is a head case.
"Actually, he was forced from the speakers chair because he actually worked well with the Democrats."
Yeah, right. I guess presiding over, and leading the pitchfork brigade over an unpopular, and failed attempt to have Clinton impeached, while fending off his own ethics charges had nothing to do with it. Neither did the recent election in 1998, which resulted in the Republicans loosing the majority that they had crowed over, and Newt had crowned himself king of, in 94. Talk about the foggy memory of history past.
It was a UA flight from HK to Tokyo. We werre the only 2 people in the rear (nh) of the 747 upper deck. We looked at each other and there was a recognition. I went over and sat next to him after we took off and we chatted. i figured out that many years ago I met him in SF and he took me home in his TR7. It was the TR7 that I remembered and then I remembered his name.
Unfortunately Peter N is getting off at Metropark. if I had 3 bottles of wine instead of 2 at brunch i'd probably ask him if he wanted a BJ in the bathroom.
1996 - 1998 is ancient history? Only because you don't like the results.
By the way, a true shellacking would have been the loss of both houses by a sizable majority. That did not happen. It was a usual mid-term election in a turbulent economic time, and most of the seats lost by Democrats were weakly held to begin with. All of which is irrelevant. The presidential race is the big show. Whether people hold their noses and vote for Obama, or proudly walk in and vote for him, he will win. Newt will be hard pressed to win the nomination, and he would not win the general election.
Well, I'd like to still have all my marbles, a career, and a busy active life at 90, so yes, she is ONE hero. But even I'm not as raunchy as Betty. : P
I would caution folks about making predictions concerning elections. As we have just seen, a week is a lifetime in politics - things can change dramatically.
By the way, I hear that ABC is working on a fresh new story. Newt's former dog walker claims that he's not a very nice man. Now THAT is news. It's so much better than examining why no one - including Jon Corzine - has been charged with the loss of $1.2 Billion entrusted to them.
I CANNOT wait to hear who spoke and who else was attending this memorial. It's a good thing I'm not there, because I wouldn't be very somber...I'd be too busy GAWKING!
Well considering he wants to get into womens bodies ( in more ways then 1) and deny gays the right to marry, I see not reason why anyone should complain that he is "personally" attacked. And since those issues are part of his platform, I am attacking his platform.
DIBS, I am taking my brother to Mt. Sinai tomorrow morning at 5:30 to have a small nodule removed from one lung. If all goes well he will be out of the hospital after one night. Then they have to decide about the 5 nodules in the other lung. All nodules are very small and it's possible that he will be ok. But of course he is totally freaked out and it's been a rough week for all of us. He wants them to give him a prognosis but I don't think they have enough info to predict anything yet. We took his 26-yr-old daughter to the airport this morning after a 10-day visit from L.A. and an hour ago I dropped him off at the F trainso he can hang out in Manhattan this afternoon with some friends. He's been staying with us but will go to my aunt's in CT after surgery to recuperate. Thanks for asking.
No you are not. You attack him personally like you always did with Bush. I never before attacked a president personally but I do Obama now because I learned it from you with Bush.
Unruly teens just threw snowballs at the snowplow guy in the schoolyard next to my building. He yelled a few choice words at them and they ran away. Then they came back and threw more snowballs. He drove his snowplow out onto the street and chased them down the block. They ran away like rabbits. Now they're back but totally ignoring him and fighting each other.
I had to google that! Looks like fun. Mostly it was just the usual riding bikes around the neighborhood, playing with toy guns, pretending to be soldiers, building forts, and so on. We did go explore canyons near my house until one kid got a really bad case of poison oak. This was before the 24-hour news cycle made it impossible for parents to let their kids out of sight in a major city.
I googled that kid who got poison oak. He was arrested at a wedding for beating the crap out of another guest!
Not even air rifles that you stick into the sand and shoot the sand into your friends' faces????
What a sad childhood. No wonder you're so fucked up. :)
Well good, dave. It's nice to see you're capable of learning something. Although, truthfully you must have gotten a good many lessons within your own party on the subject.
I only hope you 'll learn how ti understand why Newt deserves everything he gets.
I want one of those helium-filled shark toys - about 4 feet in length that come w/ a remote control - evidently they were a popular xmas present in Australia & one spooked a pilot coming in to land.
No air rifles, sorry - indeed, a sad, sad childhood explains a lot. Of course it was namby-pamby liberal California so there was probably a law against kids having those sorts of things!
attacking lawyers goes at least back to shakespeare. so gingrinch was just being shakespearean. he is/was a college prof.
so that follows. you know, those over-educated, ivy-tower, elitists that contribute nothing to society.
I've started a jigsaw-puzzle. I am, apparently, going blind. I have to keep taking my glasses off and peer at the pieces, practically up to my nose, to see them. : (
Namor was at my house drinking last night. He asked for coordinates to wherever the asshats are these days. Said he wanted to give DIBS a bunch of guff about being conservative. I told him to start with me, I was sitting right there for chrissake.
Just finished Rabbit Redux. Need to buy Rabbit is Rich and Rabbit at Rest now I suppose.
I agree. Can we go back to arguing?
My sweetness sent me photos of himself sailing, after we spoke late last night. He looked so damn happy! It was a gorgeous day for it, apparently.
LOL! Yeah, all I got is booze, too, this weekend anyway! : P
: (
I thought he was in mourning? Was he at least dressed in a black suit while sailing?
It is high time they paid their fair share of the taxes!
My neighbor came upon a group of them "bubble feeding." Look for a video of it on youtube.
I spologized. I'll say it again: I apologize for the inappropriate joke.
;Meanwhile ACC is bringing me a cat I'm fostering. Poor thing was dumped by his owner- he's 20 years old. Saw the pic on FB and couldn't stop myself. Who dumps a 20 year old cat?!
" Poor thing was dumped by his owner- he's 20 years old. "
bxgrl, That is a previously unrecognized depth of depravity and evil.
OMG! There is SNOW out there! I barely made it back alive! Save yourselves! ; )
Maybe we organize a PlusA sailing afternoon next summer?
oh im SURE no horrific tragedies would come out of THAT.
*rob*
Who dumps a 20 year old cat?!
probably it's gay lover
*rob*
*rob*
LOL! Sailing requires excellent teamwork and cooperation. I'm guessing most of the teamwork and cooperation would involve pouring drinks and taking turns tossing anyone we don't like in the moment overboard! : P
*rob*
*rob*
*rob*
Uhm, yeah, rob, we're not taking you sailing.
DIBS: "Last year they sailed through the Strait of Hormuz into the Mediterranean."
That's an amazing feat, especially since the Strait of Hormuz is between the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean.
*rob*
Six, I don't think anything gets between DIBS' men and his booty! : P
LMFAO, *rob*.
Not sure if things have changed since then.
Serves you right for entering into a virtual marriage!
Apparently at Ocean's 8, too.
Later.
Lots of possibilities for misinterpretation here!
Oh please! BY A HAIR, if at all!! Fer f*cksake! You just wait until you're coming up on the BIG FIVE-OH-NO!!!!
Plus I am going to eat China Latina comida up in the hood with him. That'll be fun.
Happy birthday Lech.
DonaT, get the results online...stay away from the tv and in person commentary! It's bad for one's sanity :-)
Sounds very JEW-ish.
*rob*
The movie "Apollo 13" offered a glimpse into this world.
"They can touch our balls at the airport"
Apparently at Ocean's 8, too.
i am totally on the fence with the whole internet piracy thing. i dont think the internet should be censored in any way however. but piracy is rampant and kinda sucks for a lot of people. it makes video games, well, kinda suck these days unless they cater to a super population of people. im kinda blah on the music aspect of it and when it comes to porn, well, i used to support pornstars, but fuck no, not no more. if porn stars and their producers wanna make money they can set up fuck dates for money with their fans if they want.
i dont like movies and and television shows getting ripped off tho. but then again im not about to drop 14 bux to see a stupid movie then have to pay 45 dollars for a small popcorn anyway.
i work in an industry where piracy actually is kinda rampant. luckily their are lawyers on board and lookout people to sue their asses.

"Just went to the supermarket to get all the fixins for chicken noodle soup"
Sounds very JEW-ish.
When I lived on the UES, my Jewish next door neighbor became my good friend. She was always over and was a bit like Kramer, bursting in all the time. Once I was making chicken soup and she says "The house smells JEWISH!!!!" Jeez, since when do the Jews get dibs on chicken soup smell!!!??!!!
dona - I don't know what he can do w/ that but don't get him started!
.
Also, my soup always tasted great, but the broth wasn't clear. I discovered that the key to keeping the broth a clear yellow was never allowing it to boil, only simmer and to constantly skim the "stuff" from the top.
Newt Gingrich's three marriages mean he might make a strong president -- really

i thought everyone has a starter marriage these days, then a i gotta get my monies marriage, and then a final marriage where you're rich from the second marriage and sexually experienced in the sack from the starter marriage. am i viewing how the str8's do it these days? it seems about right.

You really are insane, you know.
I mean that in the nicest, sort of awe-struck way.

Had fun running this morning - here I am about halfway through the race.
I'm experimenting today. I made a blueberry & apple pie and I put some dried cherries in it. I hope the dried cherries aren't too chewy. I'm kind of hoping they plump up a bit from the juices of the apples after I macerated them. Definitely a perfect day for baking/cooking.
Cobble we have an apple pie on our counter here that aneighbor brought over with blueberries. I haven't had it yet. I'm chary of gilding the lily and that sort of thing.
That's very un-1% of you, DIBS. : P
Let me know if you like it. I'll be having mine with a little Vanilla ice cream. : )
I love This Old House, and I don't even own a house to do anything to! ; )

I am thinking of developing a website for a personal small (side) business.
Is iPage any good?
Any better ideas?
Thx
*rob*
There are a ton of options for creating web pages - it all depends on what you want to do, how much technical skills you have, and how much you want to spend.
Before tonight I thought Florida would be close, with the next month (Nevada, Maine, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Arizona, Michigan, Washington) being all Romney.
I still think the calendar favors Romney, but Gingrich has the momentum to keep thinks fun.
That's the idea. Mwahahahahahaha!!
"I'm paying for this microphone"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OO2_49TycdE
Bit I will support Newt, if I am forced to.
lech, Don't even say that.
Holy Crap! It's 18 degrees outside, and I have to meet someone outside before 9 am (being driven to a church in New Jersey this morning).
I don't want to go out into the slippery world!
they woke up and realized we can't have 4 more years of this socialist bullshit. They want a president with balls who will stand up. Obama can't even negotiate himself through Congress
I'll be having some for breakfast shortly.
http://www.cnn.com/2012/01/19/politics/gop-debate/index.html
"No. But I will."
It takes two to negotiate. The Democrats have been pigheaded.
There was a shellacking for a reason; and that was after the republicans became "obstructive." The people spoke.
Subsidies are part of the tax code and need to be voted on or off. DCB is right about US corporate tax rates.
Only theoretically, when they actually pay them! : P
Don't bring up GE. You don't know what you are talking about as far as their accounting.
http://www.cnn.com/2012/01/19/politics/gop-debate/index.html
I do have an idea, thank you very much. It's "Socialism" for the rich!
Probably the singular dumbest thing you've ever said. Like I said, you have no idea how bad things would be if those banks, GM, AIG all crashed. It was bad enough that they let lehman go. Remember that???? Understand now????
Saying that it only benefitted the wealthy is really stupid.
No, I won't, but you have to agree that Newty really should have just taken a pass, and sat the f*ck down! : P
Drop it.
And by the way, re: tax code, I didn't bring up GE, so don't assume that's where I was going.
Thank heaven for small graces! : P
Plus, it was Clinton who was the liar, MM, proven.
Another illogical statement.
Yet he just won by what could be called a landslide in SC.
http://forum.brownstoner.com/question/8HvDv7rdE28=/birds-of-prey--hide-your-kids
but I'm not a clinton lover. He got rid of that glass seagull. Was such a beautiful bird. big cause of problems we are in today.
Q.E.D.
So it DOES matter, then DIBS? You can't have it both ways. Either extra-maritial dalliances matter for everyone, or they matter for no one. You can't decide depending on which side of the political spectrum you happen to be in.
Not.
I never blamed Clinton for doing it. I bet every President of the US (except Carter) got some sort of sex in the Oval Office. It would be #1 on anyone's "Bucket list."
This is the sort of east coast elitist liberal speak that the majority of the country refers to as BULLSHIT.
Too true. And once he takes a stand he's not the type to back down even if he's in the wrong.
Examples to back this statement up, please.
And you do? Now THAT's bullshit.
YOU ARE THE ONE WHO SUGGESTED THEM, NOT ME. God what a load of crap. Can you even hear yourself???
But Carter lusted in his heart for sex in the Oval Office.
I see Paterno's condition has been upgraded.
Wow, Cobble. Was that a surprise to people or is it par for the course with this woman?
Simply making them think that we are more likely to lob missiles at them is all that is necessary.
Well, I've just gotten bits and pieces so far...but...(Where is ENY when I need him...) apparently, at the dinner last night, the wife was referred to as *Eurotrash* by a very close friend of departed! Everyone is a little shocked, but apparently not surprised.
Snort!
I'm into the 'Hollywood gossip' at the moment, Arkady! ; ) Man, this is really some story. I can't wait till BH gets home to tell me the whole story. He's going to call me later today, so I'll hear about who spoke at the memorial. His mom will be one of the 5 speaking.
dibs, ever hear of 2nd market annuities? friend of mine is looking into 1...payout is from 12/2023 - 10/2030.
yield of 5.5%
Cobble, that's going to be a good story. Maybe the Eurotrash was offended by someone or some part of the funeral arrangements.
It's the fact that the payouts don't start for 11 years that is crazy. I bet even if you buy 30 year treasuries that yield only 3% you would have more money in 2030 than you would with that plan, but I'd have to do the math.
Mornin' losers. I'm feeling super sleepy/lazy today. Eventually I'll check my lotto tickets to see if I'm rich. If you all hear a super loud howl and hear tales of glitter bombs exploding , you'll know I won :-)
This one cost 65K -- and they payout is approx $1700 monthly for 12 years. Person has no reason to leave money to heirs (darn, it would be me).
Translation - I can't really argue with your statement, so I'll just call it pointless.
OK, that's it for me. Got things to do today. Right now, I'm sitting here freezing in front of the open oven, as I ran out of oil. They are supposed to deliver sometime today.
Don't freeze! Come over here! I'm just puttering, you can hang on the computer if you need it.
12 years??? You said it started in 2023 and lasted until 2030. Already you are confusing the terms. Need more details.
http://www.ehow.com/how_2058998_dispose-cremation-ashes.html
Payout is from Prudential Life ----- found this on totalreturnannuities.com
You can also try www.weebly.com which as probably the easiest site builder to use and their interface is also used by other webhosts who offer site building tools. I used them to build a site form my brother in law and it was so much easier to deal with than the other programs I use. And it's easier for him to deal with as someone with little web site experience. If you've got other questions, you can email me at bx2bklyn at g mail dot com
DOUBTFUL!!!
This ios also a perfect example of how government has gotten too big and become intrusive way beyond what the constitution was written to include.
Only someone who is a career beauracrat could come up with this stuff.
For retirees or those approaching? Not full-on CFP certifications, etc.
Mwahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!
Gingrich as president - never happen.
South Carolina does not represent the entire country. In any way, shape or form.
On another, MORE IMPORTANT MATTER, I just boarded an Amtrak train (earlier than I planned but this one is late, NIOT SURPRISING given it's gubment run) and I'm in the cafe car sitting across from a vbery hot and chatty asian guy.
If Gingrich is the nominee we can expect to hear Obama talk a lot about being a family man.
Yet again avoiding the issues and proposing "Change you can believe in"
Fool me once, shame on you.......
Folks recognized the ABC story for what it was: a hit piece that had no relevance to the presidential campaign.
rf...how is your brother????
Rf, if Gingrich is the nominee, all those Republican politicians who said he's unfit to be President will fall all over themselves to say how he's a changed man, they were wrong, etc. Democrats would do the same if the shoe were on the other foot. They want their party to win, and there are Cabinet positions to be doled out, etc.
Well done, bxgrl. I'd expect nothing less than a personal attack from you!!! How about addressing his platform????
recent history is more relevant that ancient history. You of all people should know that.

None other than HELEN "Goddess & Hero to all women over 40" MIRREN!! Turns out...they're buddies. WHAT!!!!???
But your hero is probably Betty White, right?????
By the way, a true shellacking would have been the loss of both houses by a sizable majority. That did not happen. It was a usual mid-term election in a turbulent economic time, and most of the seats lost by Democrats were weakly held to begin with. All of which is irrelevant. The presidential race is the big show. Whether people hold their noses and vote for Obama, or proudly walk in and vote for him, he will win. Newt will be hard pressed to win the nomination, and he would not win the general election.
Oops - there is nobody left!
Think whatever makes you feel better.
By the way, I hear that ABC is working on a fresh new story. Newt's former dog walker claims that he's not a very nice man. Now THAT is news. It's so much better than examining why no one - including Jon Corzine - has been charged with the loss of $1.2 Billion entrusted to them.
Benson, wanna make a bet? Stakes are very high:
I thought you were busy playing 'footsy', or whatever you call it, with your train buddy.
What a joke.
he deserves the best despite his sister's wrong and misguided political leanings. And her foul mouth. :)
A school board in Utah rejected students' choice of mascot. "Cougars" would be offensive to middle-aged women!
I had no idea liberal elitists had gotten so far west. What the hell is this country coming to????
I googled that kid who got poison oak. He was arrested at a wedding for beating the crap out of another guest!
What a sad childhood. No wonder you're so fucked up. :)
I only hope you 'll learn how ti understand why Newt deserves everything he gets.
TTYL
Bxgrl, EVERYTHING that Dave says regarding politics is actually YOUR fault. Now you know.
HA!
so that follows. you know, those over-educated, ivy-tower, elitists that contribute nothing to society.
Why — Are you guys tired of my posting about HIS trip!?!
My life is so dull and pointless, I have to live vicariously through him.
I'm watching Downton Abbey too. I missed last week but I watched it online. No DVR here. I found last year's on Netflix streaming.
Do you love it? I can't get enough — I wish it was two hours every week.

Snort! Just make sure they're of legal age, DIBS.
Just finished Rabbit Redux. Need to buy Rabbit is Rich and Rabbit at Rest now I suppose.
Score tied between Giants and 49ers in Overtime. My cousin is in SF watching the game, probably delirious by now.
