Catching up with events:

DH: good luck with the interview;

Lech: good luck if you decide to run the marathon. Normally I have a front-row seat from my balcony (3rd Street off 4th Ave), but I won't be around.

Donatella: sorry to hear that things didn't work out with that position. Something better is coming your way.

Off for my weekly visit to my mother-in-law's to make sure all is well there.
November 5, 2011 8:37 AM - Cobble B. Hiller

DCB, Sorry to hear that. Have they told you how long this will last?

Lech, What ever you decide, don't hurt yourself!

Great, just great. My neighbors started fighting about midnight last night, and joy-of-joys, they are continuing this morning.

Andy Rooney died. I didn't often like his 'attitude' or agree with his rants, but I grew up watching him on 60 Minutes. And I have a soft spot for cranky old curmudgeons.

is that the nutball who complains about everything? like oranges and coffee tables and stuff?

Great, just great. My neighbors started fighting about midnight last night

sometimes that can be amusing. oddly ive never heard anyone have a domestic dispute in my three years of living in park slope. people around here probably dont argue like normal people tho, they probably write down their grievances with each other on index cards or something. when i lived on the LES there was a woman who lived with her adult son who lived below below me and they would argue like MANIACS every night pretty much. i called the cops a few times but then eventually stopped (honestly it always sounded like she was being murdered or raped it was scary as hell). cops never did anything and everyone in the building told me it was just them being normal. it was an old chinese lady and her son who honestly i think was mildly retarded or something. one time she asked me if i could could go in her apartment to help her move a bed.

o.m.f.G. it was a one bedroom but it was straight outta the tenement museum. and dirty. smelly. and roach infested and they had like ONE lightbulb. so im helping her move this bed from the teeny tiny back room and her son comes in and whispers in my ear "im going to kill you" i was like whaaaaaaat? and then he made some sorta hyena noise. i ran the fuck out there.

November 5, 2011 11:18 AM - gay smurf hoodlum
happy belated birthday! (you werent serious that you arent doing my taxes this year, right?)

today is park day with my dog. is there any area of that park that is really nice on a crisp fall day? we always wind up near the GAP area but id love to explore the park more. the only other time i ventured deep into the park (by myself tho) i got lost in some wooded area and felt like i was in a horror movie and almost cried cuz i kept going in circles or something. id like to avoid that area but im not sure where that area was. on maps the park doesnt seem THAT big, but when youre in it it's like a labyrinthe.

I really like the part between the Audubon House and the skating rink. Just follow the signs. You do have to walk through the woods but there is a path past the doggie beach.

EW @ the dog beach. there is something off putting about that beach (we've been there a few times), but i never let my dog go in the water. im sure he'd like it tho... he ran into a lake once (somewhere upstate) and i couldnt get him out!!! im afraid of that happening on that doggy beach in the park.

where is the skating rink?! i think i saw the audobon house.. (is it sorta on top of a hill?)

They are both on the other side of the park from Prospect Park West. The skating rink is under reconstruction. Audubon House is on the lake.

CobbleDitmas, my neighbors in DC were an old married couple that fought like cats and dogs. They had some great lines too but print doesn't convey them well. I knew a lot of their marital history from what I heard through the walls.

RF, I didn't have time yesterday to post re: your comments on HP.
In my opinion, the HP Board of Directors has a history of incompetency and that is at the root of the problem.
When Apotheker was hired to replace Mark Hurd,(Also fired) he made his financial deal, which obviously included the idea that he would make a bundle if he were removed.
Given that Board's history of dumping CEO's no big name outside executive would take the job at HP without considerable guarantees.
Why they hired this Bozo in the first place is a real mystery. He was the CEO at SAP so he did have a Star name. But he didn't do a good job at SAP, and that should have disqualified him.
Worse, there were several interesting candidates within HP who were passed over. Think what that did for morale.
Yes it is gross to reward failure with millions of undeserved dollars.
But the real crime is that a great company is being run into the ground.

November 5, 2011 1:20 PM - DeadCatBounce
Cobble, thanks for your concern. A main riser broke and flooded out into the street. Lucky for me, plumbers were able to restore water on my side of the building. Big mess.

Benson, thanks.

Re fighting: When I lived in Manhattan in my "walkup" (aka tenement) on the UES, there was a lot of action. A family of 7, inhabiting the same space I had - right above me used to yell and scream constantly. The father hit the kids and they screamed bloody murder. I called Child Services and.....it was terrible....they wanted my name, but I was afraid of the father myself. It turns out that he really wasn't a bad guy and the kids were better at yelling than he was at hitting them, but it was still an abusive family environment. It really rattled me.

The other family was an older Italian couple who yelled all the time. Ironically, other than the yelling, they seemed to be a very happy couple and had a very large affectionate family. The owner (also an Italian man from the same village) told me they were probably fighting about how she made her Sunday gravy....they were just loud.

After I moved to Brooklyn, I never heard anybody fighting. Ever.

My other friend running today called me this morning with his number: 35303.
November 6, 2011 9:52 AM - Donatella
No, D-Cat, that would be handy because finding him otherwise will sort of be hit or miss.

November 6, 2011 3:41 PM - Donatella
Well, I looked up Lech on the computer and it looks like he finished the race in a very respectable time. I was lolligagging around talking on the phone and walked over and realized that I might have missed him. The the runners were still running very well; I suspected that Lech might have been by there already. I went home, logged in, found his number and that he had already finished the race!!

Congratulations, Lech!!!!

On another, pathetic note:

I'm having my super yummy dinner tonight. Got the cornish hen in the oven, stuffed full of tasty herbs etc. Went to get out my potatoes to peel them to make mashed potatoes. MY POTATO PEELER IS GONE! Can't find it anywhere :-( And yes, I know I could use a knife, but only if I wanna wind up fingerless (me peeling potatoes with a knife always ends very badly and very bloody. no can do.) Thought I'd take a quick run to Target to get a new one...THEY ARE OUT OF STOCK OF ANY TYPE OF POTATO PEELER. DAMMIT! Fine, no potatoes. So, I whip out my steamer bags so I can go ahead and steam my broccoli. I FORGOT TO BUY THE FUCKIN' BROCCOLI! AUUUUGGGH!

Apparently my chip wasn't working so no one could track me. I finished with a so so OKish time. I was doing really well until about mile 19 when the shin splints came back, and that slowed me waaaaaaay down for the last 7 miles. I was doing a walk / run / limp combo through central park. Overall, I probably got a 4:25 or so, but with no official results I don't really know. I was solidly on track for a 4:00 up to mile 19. Oh well. I also just felt really off right from the start. Something was gurling around in my belly and making me want to stop at a port a potty, which I never did. Damn Peruvian food. And I was just kind of in a fog, just not really focused. Hard to explain. But I finished, and I'm really happy with that.

Snappy, that's too funny, and the picture is really cute, too.

So, I guess you gave the game hen to the chirrun, which was their nefarious plan when they took the potato peeler in the first place?
November 6, 2011 7:11 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
MM, no, I munched some hen and put the rest away. Although I do suspect that the wee ones have something to do with the missing peeler. They are both sitting in front of the oven, looking at me expectantly. If I don't get my hands on a peeler and broccoli tomorrow, I'll likely give in and hand over the bird. Sigh. Next potato peeler will be kept near the water guns. They want nothing to do with water guns so that may work for me.

November 6, 2011 9:10 PM - DeadCatBounce
It was a dark and stormy night on the Brooklyn Moors. Cats were heard screeching incessantly, although the cause of their distress was unknown at the time.
Dr. Smurf Hoodlum sat on his futon, slowly smoking a Newport, and sipping a vintage 40. He thought back on the scene of the crime: the kitchen, with everything but the aforementioned potato peeler, perfectly arranged on the counters.
Truffles, provided by the rogue trader and smuggler, the nefarious underworld character known as DIBS, untouched on the cutting board. The recipe for Hen provided by the Pasty Brit, sat expectantly next to the Truffles. Why, Dr Hoodlum wondered, would anyone use a recipe provided by an Englishman?
To be continued...
