Why have we as a society agreed that it is acceptable for dogs to urinate on the sidewalks? Saw a huge dog leave behind a massive stream this morning. Shouldn't owners be required to rinse?

Morning!

How about we first try to get the humans from pissing in the subway stations. I've never actually smelled dog piss on a fence or tree.

Hmmmm... I think Rob said he tries to keep duke steered towards the gutters. That seems like a good ground rule. One more difficult for subway urinators to follow.

Dave, when u sell ur house, do u have an attorney to do ur closing? I've never done a residential one but probably should. I'd be supervised by someone who has a clue.

GM.

I've tried to explain how we all met on Brownstoner and then the transition to LifeInBkln to a few people I'm close to. I get very puzzled looks and a variety of responses. Some think it's interesting or really fun/great. Some seem to think it's VERY odd/strange/weird and just refuse to get it.

Morning, jb. I'm sure you know the saying that a lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client. That said, I've done refis without a lawyer but that's it. Are you buying/selling a coop or condo? I think condo transactions have more complexity and pitfalls due to it being RE as opposed to shares. My sense is that for residential RE laweyrs, it is a form practice with a little bit of negotiation, unless the other side starts to monkey around. Then you want to be on your toes and know the legal terrain well, because it is arcane. Lots of magic words you need to know that either create or extinguish rights, and you want to know what those are when you review the other side's docs. But you are more familiar with this part of the law than I am.

And some lawyers can't follow a conversation. Not naming names, Slopey, but she was inquiring about MY sale and whether she could represent me not whether she'd be representing herself!!!!!

I've probably done close to 20 RE transactions and though I feel very comfortable about almost all aspects of the process I will never do one without a lawyer....cheap insurance.

Depending on the circumstances (such as job networking), at times it's easier to say, "We met through mutual friends", rather than attempt to explain the blogs.

In Kansas City, MO, my closing on a house took about 15 minutes. Go to title company, "yes, I'll have a cup of coffee, thank you", get out pen, look over document, sign. House mine. NY makes this a production. I needed physical therapy for my hand after hours of signing documents in Brooklyn.

All of my brick and mortar friends know what we went through with our house and completely understood how I got hooked into brownstoner. Most of them at least lurked and some posted as we all bought or were trying to buy, plus renovating, around the time fo the early brownstoner days. They thought the whole notion of our gatherings was interesting and perhaps quaint. Friends would ask things like, "so, have you actually met the what?" Two friends actually figured out who I am fom my posts. What would surprise them more is how little I still care and think about all of the RE obsessions I had a few years ago and yet that I still hang out with all you folks but don't visit brownstoner much.

People who already knew me think it is a little peculiar and decadent (are there 12 step programs for this?). I met someone who became a great friend on diets.com about 13 years ago. It was blogging about dieting. When the other people started talking about their meals, the two of us got annoyed. We were spending our time amusing one another with crazy stories. We finally met in person and have been friends since.

I've done house closings in 3 states, and all were different.

Alabama: Done at seller's lawyer's office - both buyer and seller (or representatives) present
Texas: Done at title company office - both buyer and seller (or representatives) present
California: done by neutral "escrow company" - neither side present

I've only bought and sold in NYC, so we were always represented by counsel. Co op purchase and sale went fine. House purchase, as some of you know, ended up in litigation. We were fortunate that our attorney was both an able RE transactional lawyer and a skilled RE litigator. Also a good friend.

I had two interesting closing where there was potential conflict of interest.

When I sold the first house I ever bought, the buyer turned out to be an accountant who shared office space with my lawyer, unbeknownst to either of us until we met. My lawyer closed the sale for the two of us if I remember correctly but it was very straightforward.

When I bought the P-Town house, I used a lawyer who actually owned the real estate agency where the house was listed but the sellers had a different lawyer.

Rachael Maddow played the clip of the soldier "coming out" to his father on the phone. I am really happy about the repeal of DADT. It is amazing the stories some of the soldiers told about being afraid, constantly. That was a travesty. It was really moving to hear the interviews.

At the end of my closing on the building, I remember being shaken down for a "tip" for the title company person. 200 bucks. (The lawyer leaned over and told me it was customary). I had writers cramp, my eyes were blurring over and was looking forward to never seeing the sellers again. I caved in.

I think I'd refuse to pay it. It's not a 'tip' if you are forced to pay it - then it becomes a fee - which should have been included in their fee for service if they really wanted it/expected it. Otherwise, they'd just have to kiss the fattest part of my ass - all of it.

When I sold my Manhattan condo, the broker who represented the buyer was a particularly nasty bitch. At the end, she did the walk through and couldn't get the DW to work (she didn't press the right buttons) so I went there and had the doorman see that it worked.

SHe was agitated all through the closing because she had somewhere important to go and she demanded $600 for a new dishwasher. My lawyer and I conferenced out of the room 3X just to prolong her stay and in the end I gave her $150 and told her that I've spent less money with prostitutes and that she was one notch below a common street whore. She also missed her appointment.

My RE agent later reported her to the board for all the other problems she caused during the process.

Arkady - I did not have $100 cash on me to tip the person and I did not have any extra checks. I had moved into the house a month before I closed. We had to postpone the closing because my lawyer's father got really sick and died. I had to take care of some of the details that the lawyer should have been responsible for which I did not mind considering the circumstances. The owner and I had worked out all the details regarding prorating fuel bills etc. I think my lawyer did pay the title person, I don't remember. Agreed, dibs. Lawyer should tell client in advance. The tip is customary. In our case, title closer earned every penny. Sellers tried lots of shenanigans at closing, including resisting escrow for ECB violations and producing various documents -- releases, satisfactions of judgment, assignments, etc. -- that appeared bogus. Closing lasted 5 hours and title closer held their feet to the fire the whole time and would not tolerate any BS.

When I closed on my condo last March, Citibank kept calling and raising problems and objections. Their lawyer actually apologized to us.
We were there 7 hours. At the end, the Citibank lawyer pulled out the sellers check, and they had the sellers name wrong on the check.
Most unprofessional behavior I can imagine coming from a major bank.

I am not sure about this, but wouldn't the tip (or any disbursement) to another party at the closing be required to be disclsoed in the HUD-1 forms? It might even violate RESPA for the lawyer to tip the title company and then pass the cost on to the client. (Not sure about the lawyer independently tipping a service provider with whom they do business regularly.)

September 21, 2011 10:52 AM - Slopefarm
m4l -- escrow agent is usually an attorney and can be disbarred for that. lawyer has ethical obligation to maintain ledger and account for all escrow funds. They are held by the escrow agent as fiduciary to the person who puts the funds in. We had some doubts in our case that the rules were being followed but all we had to do was sneeze in a way that sounded like the words "disciplinary rule" and everything was kosher again on that front. There is also a fund to compensate people who lose funds due to attorney misconduct with escrow accounts.
September 21, 2011 10:55 AM - More4Less
Slopey, if you're a lawyer who does predominantly RE closings, it's probable that you could be dealing with 10 transactions at the same time. the cumulative deposits from those 10 transactions could be big enough for the lawyer to cash it and run away - ie they aint worried about being disbarred at the point, they just want to run away from the long arm of the law

Ooh! ooh! I know this one, Biffy! Because books are printed/bound in certain set numbers of pages (think multiples of 4/8/16/24, etc.). It has to do with the manufacturing process. And if the book/text/content isn't an exact even number of pages...you get blank pages.

"Interesting...never knew that about books. Can't they do something about that? Think of all the paper it wastes."

They can with perfect-bound books (think some trade or PB books with glued flat spines - the kind where the individual pages can fall out after much use), but not with stitched or bound books. It may waste paper, but it's actually more expensive NOT to have those extra pages in the sense that the printing and binding machines are set up to handle this method/number of sheets/pages.
September 21, 2011 11:26 AM - Biff Champion
Cobble, I saw this in Yahoo answers too:

Books rather than being made out if individual pages are most typically make out of folios (large sheets of paper that have been folded. Due to the way they are manufactured when a book goes only into say the first page of the last folio it is cheaper to use that whole folio than to custom cut one for the last pages. Some publishers just leave all the blank pages at the end while some split them between front and back.

Wiki has other explanations for blank pages in the middle of books.

September 21, 2011 11:26 AM - bxgrl
Snappy- that's where the designer comes in. But sometimes there just isn't enough content. And then again, there's something quality about several blank pages in a good book- like a buffer.

"yesterday in the house of the day thread, there was ONE post and it was by crownmolding saying... "ive been in that house before many years ago as ive lived in this neighborhood for 20 years" hahah"

Yesterday's HOTD was in Clinton Hill so thinking 11217 = crownmolding even if he did post is ridiculous
September 21, 2011 11:26 AM - Biff Champion
From Wiki:

An intentionally blank page is a page that is devoid of content, and may be unexpected. Such pages may serve purposes ranging from space-filling to content separation and room for notes. They may also prevent ink transfer that would otherwise occur between printed pages and the inside covers, which is particularly an issue with vinyl binders. Similarly, blank pages are often present before, between, and after illustration pages, to prevent ink transfer.

Sometimes, these pages carry a notice such as, "This page is intentionally left blank." Such notices typically appear in printed works, such as legal documents, manuals and exam papers, in which the reader might otherwise suspect that the blank pages are due to a printing error and where missing pages might have serious consequences.[1]

In 2001, German student Lars Kasper drew attention for "The This Page Intentionally Left Blank Project", which encouraged webmasters to include blank pages on websites as places for "rest for the restless mind".[2][3] David Feldman's 2007 book Why Do Pirates Love Parrots?, part of his Imponderables series, includes a chapter discussing the function of intentionally blank pages.[1]

cobble, of course, is right about why there are blank pages. Book printers are mass producers- the print machines aer set up to handle the largest sheet of paper, that is then cut. When I do a book or journal, I always make a paper mock up, as well as the layout on the computer. Keeping track of 100+ pages is very confusing, especially since you have to plan the layout so that certain pages fall on he left, certain on the fight. And if your centerfold is important, you have to design around that too.

Interesting read from The Nation...

The Other Execution Tonight—Man Who Dragged James Byrd, Jr. To His Death
Greg Mitchell on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 - 10:07

If you are inclined to question capital punishment, it is not hard to protest the scheduled execution tonight of Troy Davis in Georgia. His case contains much doubt about his guilt, and the racial aspect (black man as victim of white-dominated justice system in the former Confederacy) is undeniable. What really tests a principled position against the death penalty are cases like Lawrence Brewer.

That's why I was happy to receive, just a few minutes ago, an email from the National Coalition Against the Death Penalty. Of course, it calls for last-minute action to save Davis. But it also includes this key section:

"We should also note the odd juxtaposition of the two executions scheduled for exactly the same time this evening. At 7pm EDT in Georgia, racism plays a part in the execution of Troy Davis. At 6pm CDT in Texas, Lawrence Brewer is to be executed for his participation in the infamous racist hate crime dragging murder of James Byrd in Jasper, TX in 1998. Please join NCADP in opposing the executions of both men. We stand against all executions without reservation."

The Brewer case certainly tests one principles (as did, for example, the McVeigh case). There is the matter of the brutality of the crime. Not only was it racist in origin but evidence suggests Byrd was alive for most of the ordeal, losing body parts as he was dragged and ultimately decapitated. Then there is the fact that Brewer (and at least one of his colleagues, also on death row) was a white supremacist.

Also: He is unrepentant. In July, in his only interview with the media since the arrest 13 years ago, he told a Texas TV reporter: "I have no regrets. I'd do it all over again to tell you the truth."

Nevertheless, Byrd's only son, Ross, has campaigned against the execution of Brewer, as a member of Murder Victims For Reconciliation (a group profiled in the book I co-wrote with Robert Jay Lifton, Who Owns Death?). Yesterday he told Reuters: "You can't fight murder with murder. Life in prison would have been fine. I know he can't hurt my daddy anymore. I wish the state would take in mind that this isn't what we want."

It will be interesting to see how many of those who protest the Troy Davis execution will also raise their voices against the state murder of the horrid racist killer Lawrence Brewer.

My "official" stance is that I'm against the death penalty. But it takes a VERY forgiving person to be against the execution of Brewer. If it was a family member of mine, I would have an incredibly tough time opposing it (his execution, that is).

Very thought provoking, biff. I'm really struggling to find an answer for myself, although right off the bat I have no sympathy for Brewer. I understand, kinda sorta, Byrd's son's position but Brewer has no regrets and that for me is the sticking point. Davis, on the other hand is a much different situation. There is a huge amount of questionable evidence and testimony. 7 out of 9 witnesses recanted their testimony, there is no dna evidence tying him to the crime. The judge refused to consider something like 70+ pages of material throwing the Davis conviction into question and seems only to care that the family of the dead officer wants the execution to go forward. I don't think the death penalty is a deterrent. I don't like that we use it as part of the justice system and if there is a smidgen of doubt, no one should be executed until all doubt is erased. But someone like Brewer? I only wish they would execute him the same way he did Byrd.

I would imagine it's all about the hit count. Just interesting how it completely flies in the face of his reasoning (as he stated and as is surmised) behind eliminating the OT, e.g., elevating the level of discussion, appeasing advertisers, being less offensive, more on topic, blah blah blah.

I 've never heard of "johnknife" so I wouldn't be too concerned with their opinion on the web site.

Regarding the discussion of real estate closings,
here's another tid bit for those thinking of buying:

There's this little thing that sits in the corner of every closing,
it looks inconspicuous at first, cloaked in it's corner and hiding behind all the legal terminology.

When the time is right,
it jumps out like a Tasmanian Devil, teeth bared, to bite you in the ass.
It's name is the NEW YORK STATE MORTGAGE TAX.
It consistes of a little tax stamp which adds 1.75% of the mortage to the closing costs.
In other words $1,750 dollars for every 100K borrowed.
...and there's no way around it.

September 21, 2011 2:33 PM - dibs
Legion, if a buyer doesn't know about that beforehand then they are severely ill informed and probably shouldn't be buying a property. "Thanks, Legion. Oh, one more question about that...if the seller agrees to pay the buyer's closing costs, does that include the mtg tax, or is that still left on the buyer?"

I believe the seller can give the buyer a "concession" at closing which I believe is a sort of break on the sale price to cover closing costs.

Transfer tax:

RPTT Rates
The TYPE of sale or transfer of property and tax rate for each type determines the amount of tax due. The tax is usually paid as part of closing costs at the sale or transfer of property.

Type

#1 Residential - A conveyance of, or the transfer of, an economic interest in:

a one- to three-family house;
an individual residential condominium unit; or
an individual cooperative apartment.
#2 Residential - A grant, assignment, or surrender of, or the transfer of an economic interest in a leasehold interest in

a one- to three-family house or
an individual dwelling unit in a home of more than three families living independently of each other.
Consideration

Residential Type 1 and 2:

If the consideration is $500,000 or less, the rate is 1% of the consideration.
If the consideration is more than $500,000 the rate is 1.425%.
All other transfers:

If the consideration is $500,000 or less, the rate is 1.425% of the consideration.
If the consideration is more than $500,000 the rate is 2.625%.

So 1.425% for most Brooklyn properties.

In New York it used to be much lower. Bloomie doubled, or more than doubled it. There is nothing approaching that cost anywhere else.
When will they start charging for bike registration? Perhaps that is the mayor's real motive?

"This post was supposed to be (a) sorta fun and (b) potentially a jumping off point for a discussion about quality of life issues in Fort Greene, albeit in a somewhat sensationalized format. The elimination of the OT was not based on never discussing issues such as this, it was about a small subset of readers taking up too much oxygen on the site discussing things that had no topical bearing and, frankly, acting in a proprietary way that was often alienating to newcomers. We will certainly admit that the readers who expressed frustration at the dominance and mob mentality of the OT commenters have failed to blossom into active commenters as quickly or as plentifully as we would have hoped, but that doesn't mean that it was a mistake to end it. While we will also admit to a certain clumsiness in bringing about the end of the OT, we still believe it had to be done. (And to be clear, since many people still think it was driven by a desire to kiss up to advertisers, it was about trying to enhance the sense of community. Many OT commenters still have a mistaken sense of their collective impact on traffic--a few hundred comments a day actually doesn't matter very much to traffic or the bottom line.) While we have quite a lot of affection for most OT commenters on an individual level, let's face it: It had gotten totally out of control, both in terms of behavior and volume of comments; our frustration was hardly unknown and yet the OT gang made no effort to try to police itself of bring its bad players into line. 15,000 or so people read the site every day and too much of the tone was being dictated by a small group of people. Admittedly, we could have tried just banning the small number of truly disruptive forces--but, actually, we did try that upon occasion and inevitably we'd get emails from members of the group begging for clemency. It was exhausting. Babysitting the comments in the OT was a fruitless though time consuming job that we no longer have the patience for. We can understand why many people had hurt feelings about the way things went down and we're sorry about that, but it had to be done.

And speaking of being time-consuming, that's all we're going to say on the topic for now so we'll apologize in advance for not engaging in any further back-and-forth in this thread. "

It's now reported they were all STOLEN. haha... don't you have to be a member to get in the door?

Just want to say something to you guys about Jon Butler......... if you really read what he wrote..... that he just wanted to start a discussion (in a fun way) about a supposed mugging, just consider what that means about him. He is clearly posting that assinie shit to get a rise out of somebody, and to stimulate the kind of toxic discussion he purportedly hates. I propose that everyone just let him go back to tumbleweeds and whistling winds down the alleys of his articles and allow his huge readership to react as they will.

Are we the OT diaspora? That is a negative way of defining this blog.

Thx Bxgrl, but a lot of the fun is going out of economics as we slide ever closer to recession.

Oh? I wasn't aware that we ever LEFT the "recession"! : P

So he made you out to be the bad guys to a bunch of people on-line who don't know who you are. So what, has it caused anyone here any harm? Continuing to post on Brownstoner benefits Mr. B.

Everyone who can should go look at Snappy's response to Jon. Go, Snappy!

Bravo Snappy
September 21, 2011 7:44 PM - Donatella
True, Arkady. In her inimitable way, Snappy expressed perfectly and very politely, our sentiments.

And Bxgrl, if you were hoping the guy to be "cool" about the OT, clearly he wasn't, and still isn't and perhaps
that is because he just isn't cool. Who knows why.... That's his problem.
September 21, 2011 7:45 PM - Donatella
Completely agree, Bed Sty Maven.

BSM- I rarely post there anymore- far less than some of the other PLusas. I'm not living my life worrying over Jon or brownstoner, so please save the advice. And it is a so what? Most of us know each other and so does Jon, and even Kael. It's not about getting back on brownstoner- except for MM's post, which now I can no longer even see, I don't much care. It is about setting the record straight because I don't like me or my friends being used as punching bags internet or not. Jon's getting play out of all this and online personas are personas none the less.
September 21, 2011 7:47 PM - Donatella
Well, let's put it this way, I understand why people were posting and I liked the posts but I think maybe now we should just leave him to the little graveyard he created.

To change the topic a little, post labor day, I stepped up my game in reaching out to old colleagues and it looks like I have a couple of consulting gigs. Who knows maybe enough to start a new business???!!!!
September 21, 2011 7:50 PM - Bedstuymaven
Mr. B, thanks for replying. The questions asked earlier in my post honestly weren't meant to try to get you to rehash the decisions behind ending the OT - I'm of the mind that what's done is done. So, let's talk about the real meat of this which is why post this tweet. I'm going to have to echo what ENY said - this tweet post failed miserably to reach its goal. Could posting tweets be an interesting jumping off point for conversation? Absolutely. And this particular tweet? It was chosen to spark a conversation about quality of life issues? I'll go ahead and give you the benefit of the doubt that you did in fact hope have a quick thought that it may spark that line of conversation. But you simply had to know that this would instead give you one of two things. 1) Exactly what you got - angry posters who felt as though they had been baited, or 2) The lowest common denominator of posts that quickly turns into a race/class battle.

Now, since you went into detail about the end of the OT, I'll comment on that as well. In that thread where you announced the end of the OT, I didn't wish a pox on your house or anything else. I wished you well and stated that I understood your decision. And I meant that. While I never liked the way it was done, I took you at face value that day regarding your decision and have continued to read and post on your blog. I simply ask that you understand that based on what I've seen since then, it doesn't really look like the problem was truly where you placed it. This isn't just about the other readers not being quick to comment as you stated. This is about the tone of the comments that still persist. I've seen the nastiness, etc. that was supposed to disappear with the ending of one thread. Tired of policing the OT? Fair enough. If it was supposed to be policed. And it was encumbent upon us to reign in our more volatile members? Ok. Never heard that one before, but ok. We are all adults here (well, in terms of age anyway!) and people will do what they will, not only regardless of what you say, but also regardless of what we say. If you as blog master felt as though you couldn't control the 'crazies' (yes, I know, my word, not yours), what made you think that we could?

Remember the first time the OT hit HUGE numbers? It was a Thursday in August about 2 years ago. In the midst of our posting frenzy, you popped in to give us encouragement to keep on going. You said something along the lines of "you go, girls!" Tacit approval of what we were doing. And the conversation that day in the OT? It was no different than others. Sex, cats, food, more sex, poo mist, etc. I'll never sit here and say that the OT was high-brow by any means. I don't think any of us could ever make such a claim with a straight face. But, still, that's what it was for though, right? Taking it away because it represented a pit of unpleasant conversation is fine. You just can't be surprised or all that angered when people point out to you that, even in the absence of the OT, the fungus is still among us.

I hold no illusions about the power of what amounts to a handful of posters in relation to your readership at large. If we were all to leave tomorrow and never click on this site again, I don't doubt that you'd still have plenty of click, pageviews, etc. and be just fine. I never said I was taking my toys and going home, never again to return. And you, in that end of the OT thread, stated that you hoped we'd all stay around and continue to provide on-topic comments in the other threads. You said you didn't want us to go away. So imagine the surprise when we read an article by Kael wherein he states proudly, “So if a portion of your readership makes a lunge for the steering wheel, don’t just threaten to turn the car around. Actually pull over and make those readers get out and walk. You’ve got somewhere else to be.” Simple translation – kick them out and be done with them. Now I know you may be tempted to defend Kaels’ statement and give it a different meaning, but let’s be real about this. He meant ‘kick them out.’ You posted a comment about your readership levels in that thread, yet made no effort to rebuke his euphemistic statement about kicking people out. Again, I say that shows tacit approval.

The bottom line here is that we feel we've been hearing duplicitous statements - those about what you wanted from this blog and those regarding what you want/wanted from us as active posters on your site. And to tell you the truth, that really burns.

September 21, 2011 8:09 PM - Donatella
Thanks, Snappy. Pete, wouldn't THAT be great!

Tonight I spent 34 minutes of my life (and 34 cell phone minutes) listening to a sweet but nutty woman pitch the most hairbrained idea about timberland in Mexico. My friend had given her my number a while ago (he has since apologized) and I couldn't just seem to cut her off and hang up. Have you ever spoken to someone (or listened to someone) who can talk for 10 minutes without a breath? I could have just interrupted mid-sentence but I didn't feel good about it. I just let her run on and on, looking for an opening to hang up.

dona- at this point I am so upset I would be happy just to beat it out of her. This is one of those anal retentive nervous nellies who keep changing their minds and expect you to charge them the same price no matter how much extra work you do. I did- - now she claims things weren't done in a timely manner (trust me when I can prove they were. Thankd g-d I kept all the emails and dates), that I "checked out" for 2 weeks (I told her Spetember was crazy for me with 9/11 and a smal temp job but we did keep in touch. There's more but I am really feeling burned - I bent over backwards to work with this woman. She chickened out of starting her business and now wants to lay it on my. Even though we ar still 10 days away from our agreed upon deadline and she has seen most of the work. She claims it was not delivered finished- yes, because it was waiting on her final changes. I got an email about a new Meetup group started

Do I belong in NY?

We started this group to meet up with people who share the same complaints as us, have a laugh about them and to make new friends. The purpose of this group is to make life for those who feel they don’t belong here more enjoyable. You should join this group if you: • Are sick and tired of constant honking cabs and endless cars and traffic jams • Think that a residential city should not be intersected by highways on every block • Are always getting cut up by cars while riding your bicycle • Think the NYC subway is convenient but pretty gross • Think that calling a block of cement with no trees a ‘park ‘ is absolute bullshit • Miss seeing the seasons turn because you don’t live near Central Park • Think NY Magazine, Time Out NY and the Village Voice don’t talk to you • Are not interested in shopping and spending money on things you don’t need • Are fed up of meeting in bars and restaurants that are so loud and noisy you can’t think • Do not communicate using ‘oh my god’, ‘yeeah’, and ‘like’ • Are interested in having an conversation about things that really mean something or matter (politics, the environment, what is the meaning of life etc) • Don’t care about sports on TV, or competitive sports in general • Have no clue what programs are on TV but prefer to spend your time reading, talking, cooking, making music, just looking out of the window, doing yoga or some other thing like that • Don’t like seeing people eating food on every street corner you look • Know how to hold a knife and fork properly while eating • Don’t appreciate being rushed out of a restaurant. (eg having the plate taken away from under your nose while you are still chewing the last bite) • Can’t wait for the weekend to get the hell out • Can accept all this and still have a laugh • Have a cool and interesting plan for where’s next

September 21, 2011 8:30 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
"Think that calling a block of cement with no trees a ‘park ‘ is absolute bullshit"

Oh, yes! I say that all the time! But, considering that long ass list, if anyone agrees with all of that, I'd say it's high time they moved...that shit's not changing!
September 21, 2011 8:30 PM - Donatella
Bxgrl, maybe you can work it out. If not, that is why they have court. Good luck with it. Don't get stressed.

Only thing I agree with on that list is that Time Out & the Village Voice are completely lame (or at least were when I last read them 5+ years ago).

Other than that, guess I must be NYer at heart.
September 21, 2011 8:43 PM - Donatella

September 21, 2011 8:49 PM - etson
Not me, one of the first things I appreciated when first I moved to NYC was much faster service in restaurants.

NYMag doesn't bother me much. Occasional good article among the crap & their website has some funny stuff.
September 21, 2011 8:51 PM - Donatella
Etson, did you ever have your drink snatched away when there was still a little in there? That burns me. Not enough to join a group or leave NY though.
September 21, 2011 8:51 PM - etson
"Are interested in having an conversation about things that really mean something or matter (politics, the environment, what is the meaning of life etc)"

This was the lamest part. Writer clearly thinks they are sooo much deeper and more interesting than the mortals around them.
September 21, 2011 8:52 PM - etson
I drink fast enough not to have that problem dona.
September 21, 2011 8:52 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
I only ponder the meaning of life when

1. really drunk
2. really depressed

other than that, why bother?
September 21, 2011 8:54 PM - Donatella
Or do you know how to use a knife and fork??? Maybe that was an uninitiated response to our Pizza eating habits. Only complete barbarians eat that with a knife and fork. Perfect alien detection test. HERE EAT THIS PIZZA.
Edited at September 21, 2011 8:54 PM
September 21, 2011 8:56 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
ROFL! If you are amongst company where you feel you need to eat pizza with a knife and fork, you are hanging out with the wrong people. Pizza is a hand-held food. Only time I've ever eaten pizza with a knife and fork was when I was on the train to NJ and couldn't wash my hands before touching my food. I used the plastic knife and fork they gave me at the take out place. Otherwise, hands all the way.
September 21, 2011 8:56 PM - Donatella
I know, Snappy. Why is the contemplation of the meaning of life so connected in my mind with deep depression? I have NEVER contemplated the meaning of life when happy.
September 21, 2011 8:57 PM - Donatella
yeah, utensil pizza eaters. Total losers. Deport them all.

I presumed they meant holding the fork in the right hand and leaving the knife on the plate or table unless cutting something. As opposed to fork in left, knife in right.

(which made me wonder if they were British as a lot if the gripes sounded like bored expat wife complaints. But then I noticed they wrote 'bullshit', so unlikely)
September 21, 2011 9:03 PM - bxgrl
I associate the contemplation of the meaning of life with picking out navel lint. And I never have navel lint so.... But I do find great psychological meaning in using a knife and fork on a slice of pizza.

In Japan, I used to think that using chopsticks would slow me down. Hell no, I got really good at eating with chopsticks!

I am guessing that the proper use of knife and fork might relate to holding a fork nicely balanced between your thumb, forefinger and middle finger, rather than holding it with a fist. (God, immediate disqualifier!)

Yeah, etson, you ARE going to show up someday!!!!!

I sent you pvt email of a screen shot of what I saw.
September 21, 2011 10:29 PM - cobblehiller
Yes, I've looked at those. We've been to see a bunch, I'm starting to be able to translate the listings to reality. They take particular photos, of course, and leave out certain aspects. It's a fascinating study. I've NEVER had to look at so many apts to find a place to live. The last 3 times I've moved, I've found a place within 2-3 tries. This 'escapade' of ours has been very trying.
September 21, 2011 10:32 PM - cobblehiller
Ah, I just saw it, yep, I'm not seeing nearly as many apts, may need to loosen/open parameters a bit. But for now, I need to get away from the computer, it's been a (of many) difficult day.
