The MTA got full A, B, C, and D service restored by rush hour this morning.
I think that is pretty impressive, considering there was up to 10 feet of water covering over a mile of track less than 24 hours ago.
Well, technically close to 5 miles of track - 4 tracks x 1.2 miles of tunnel.

I would make sure that the car I as in was only filled with hot latino and Asian guys, rather unrealistic. And that frottage was not only allowed but encouraged, realistic.

My unrealistic change:

The system would shut down for a full week - everyone gets a paid week off - and they spend the first two days putting cyanide and arsenic laced snicker bars all over the tracks and platforms. For the next four and a half days, all the rats munch and die. Then they bring in a HUGE industrial strength vacuuming system that sucks up all the rats, garbage, etc. Then re-open the system and carry on. This happens every two years to keep the rats in check. Anyone caught littering is fined $500 and if they don't have the money to pay the fine, they get caned Singapore style (remember that kid who got is ass beat over there for spray painting cars? yeah...that's what I'm talking about!)

I fully agree with the no eating rule. Except for babies I guess. If your baby needs a bottle, then by all means, feed 'em so I don't have to hear them screaming like banshees.

Easy change (at least from a budget perspective): no eating allowed

Easy change when there is more money : Bring back the W and extend it to Brooklyn to replace the M service lost last year (The rerouted M is working well for people along it, so I would not want to screw with it)

I'm dreaming: Hook underused tracks in Brooklyn to the Second Ave subway via new tunnel, extend existing lines in outer parts of Brooklyn.

Realistic - Crank up the air-conditioning year round, air condition the platforms, and do NOT turn on the heat in colder weather.

Unrealistic - Sell reserved seating.

Well, I would phase in a number of changes. The first one would be banning backpacks, all people over 250 pounds get to be in the fat peoples' car. Until we phase out drinking hot beverages, all coffee swizzlers get to go in the fat peoples' car and spill on them. Until we start enforcing the beggar rules, the guys who sell candy and beg can be in the fat people's car. Also, the people with tinny headphones. Additionally, we will put anyone with over 3 shopping bags, bicycles, luggage and material on handtrucks in the fat peoples' car. Then we have someone (sort of like me) lecturing the fat peoples' car about their shortcomings and how to reform for a couple of months. Then we just detach the fat peoples' car.

I would however like to see people with craptastic headphones banned. Yesterday morning, as I tried to read my book, a guy behind me was listening to Jay-Z and Kanye West's new album. And, unfortunately, I and the rest of the front of the car was listening, too. HATE shitty earphones that broadcast your tunes. If one can afford to buy new albums, they should be able to afford better earphones.

Ok, forget the fat peoples' car. Every New Yorker subway rider has to take a brief course called "Know your dimensions" where people in question are tested. "Can you fit in that space?". If you can judge correctly 8 out of 10 times, you pass. If you fail, you go in the caboose with the coffee drinkers, bicycles, luggage beggars and tinny earphone people.

Ok...so the Daily News has a story online about a group of bicyclists offering free escorts to women from 5 subway stations from 8pm-midnight in response to the rash of attempted rapes. I found the times piece on "National Single and Unmarried Americans month" to be pretty poorly written.

The social, political, and economic dynamics of being single vs partnered, as well as having children or not, are incredibly dynamic. From my perspective the articles picked a few generalizations and selected statistics and quotes that matched the author's opinion.

For one example, there is a huge tax disadvantage to getting married if the two people make relatively close to the same income, and additional disadvantageous kick in as the family income goes above $150, even with disparate incomes.

I do think that our society is slow to catch up to the realities of the wide variety of relationship status that exist out there. I just don't think such generalized and opinionated articles help any.

i was trying to think of an improvement id like on the subways couldnt think of any that wouldnt sound totally outlandish, but i DO agree with dave about the temp issue once they turn off the ac. the r train was kinda stuffy and gross this morning... and they havent turned the heat on yet. in the winter they blast the heat and it's WAY too hot which i why i rarely ever wear a jacket or coat to work in the winter (people think im a freak but whatever) i dont mind walking the few blocks to the subway from home it's not gonna kill me and i know how grossly hot the subway is gonna be and how grossly hot old loft buildings in soho get as well in the winter, so screw that im gonna dress like it's summer or fall.

re: national singles week? oh whatever, dont need a special week, how utterly lame. gee thanks to the crotch-dependent to give us a week to feel good about ourselves. and yes the crotch-dependent get TONS more tax breaks. unless your a poor female mother, then it's best you dont get married cuz you lose out on the poor single mommy bennies train. anyway, im not gonna let this bother me anymore. if the economy gets worse and i become a victim im just gonna turn to crime. hide your ipads and locks your doors cuz there's a butterfly hiding in your closet.

Donatella, I've been thinking about your comments about sharing the road with bikes. I drive a lot in the city and I don't find it's that much of a problem. Definitely an increase in bike commuters and ordinary people using bikes to get from here to there, run errands, whatever, in the last year. Most (not all!) of them are reasonably intelligent about their safety and therefore reasonably predictable. It was unnerving for a while to be on the lookout for their presence on the road but I got used to it and I just don't think they are as much of a problem as you do. And I think it's unrealistic to think that they are going away! I am not so sure I'd like my 15-year-old to ride a bike in the street, but it's not outside the realm of possibility for me. She'll be 16 in March and therefore eligible for the bikeshare program starting next summer and I could see her using it. It would certainly mean less schlepping for me when she goes places that are not very far away but difficult to get to without many transit changes.

Rob, smartest thing to do is be pro-active. Don't wait for them to hunt you down. Call or write, make a deal for what you can realistically pay each month, and go to it. Anything else is foolishness.

Another thing, Rob: don't bother paying with money orders. Any company that has your social security number can find any other company that has your social security number. If the student loan bank gives you a better deal for paying via direct deposit and you can live with that, go for it.

Well, ok, rf. Those are my observations. I definitely understand the issue of getting around. It seems that your daughter is a pretty level-headed person and I think that anybody who does venture out on a bike needs to be smart about where they will ride, i.e. stick to the side streets and stay away from main thoroughfares. And wear a helmet and have the right sized bike, and flashers for night and all the rest of it. Good luck to her. Seriously.

Good luck, dh. I've never had to do this, but good advice I've heard is you have to see the train coming way down the track -- harder to stop smoking if you maintain all the other habits that accompany it. Be prepared in advance with an alterantive to lighting up at all the times you are used to it. I've also heard some people have fared well with cinnamon sticks, to give your hands and mouth something cigarette-like to do. Goodluck -- this is hard to do but great health benefit if you succeed.

MM: my total for both of my loans will be 180 a month. 120 for the government one and 60 a month for the private one. it's easily manageable if i tighten my purse strings (and quit smoking)

honestly, i dont want to do direct deposit. because there will be times there is no money in there also, i need leeway of sending in late sometimes, etc. they are usually okay with it if you call them. i dont get the thing about the social security # tho, student loans has that, and yeah you have to write your SS# on money orders, but what other companies are talking about? i dont have any other debts, nor any other bills under my name except for the two student loans.

I'm just saying that bike riding is such an obvious means of transportation. You and I can drive to Fairway but without a car, it's a bitch to get there, just one example. I am sure you wouldn't want all those people on bikes to have cars--you think it's hard to find parking now! As for my daughter, definitely a helmet and safety equipment. She's actually pretty sensible for a teenager. When the city and the MTA were talking about eliminating metrocards for students, even though I didn't think it would happen, I told her she would have to use the Bedford Ave. bike lane and then the Dekalb bike lane to go to Tech, and home on the Willoughby lane and then Tompkins (not Nostrand! Although it too will have a bike lane too). A little out of the way but safer than the 2-way streets and even the side streets where I don't think drivers pay enough attention.

DH can you take a few weeks off of work? you can put yourself in detox and then inpatient rehab for smoking you know. you have insurance right? it makes it much easier. i think they also make you exercise everyday multiple times a day so you dont gain weight.

There is the cheerleading, positive pitch for quitting smoking - the obvious $$$$ savings, feeling better, better sports performance, no smell, blah blah. Your speaking voice changes a little, singing voice much better, better endurance, all of that. If you want the negative pitch, believe me, I have one. But with that I use caution. Includes specific stories of my friends and relatives who got lung cancer and COPD.

Keep up the good work, dh.

DH, good luck, you can do it.

Both of my parents quit cold turkey when I was around 13 or 14, and both stayed off ciggies for the rest of their lives. I don't know how they did it, but they did. My mother always said that what did it for her was not even her kids' nagging, (we were awful) it was the time she ran out of cigarettes in the evening, when all the stores were closed, and she spent half the night going through every pocket and purse, even throwing up the chair cushions, and digging through ashtrays, and couldn't find anything. She realized that she was totally addicted, and she stopped cold, right then and there, and never smoked again. I guess you just have to come to that bottom of the pit moment.

About 30-40 min to Chinatown and there is a pretty decent Chinese community on Newkirt by B/Q train with local shops as well as pretty big Brooklyn Chinatown close enough on Avenue U and in Sunset park if that's important to him. Avenue U shops are only 3 express train stops away.

Maybe not too close to the city but hey, the prices reflect that.

Any of you losers interested in a nice size one bedroom on the 1st floor but elevated (not ground floor). It's a sponsor sale so no board approval and I have the "in" with the sponsor so definitely below market price. It's pretty big (probably hovering between 700 sq feet) and pretty dated but livable with minor cosmetic changes. Maintenance about 600 (I can tell you how much for sure if you're interested). Real one bedroom with eat in kitchen. I think I'll be able to get it down to 130-140K AS IS.

I'm only interested in the kitchen help, Minard, not the other Silverdaddies.

The new Roosevelt Island tram is much nicer than the old one, better selection at the bar, reclining seats, widescreen TV's.

Actually, no, the main improvement is that it is less likely to stop dead over the East River like the old one.

Hey DH, did you see that Anella chef split to open his own place in Carroll Gardens? I am excited.

That review of St. Anselm was drool worthy. Sounds good.

Maybe it wont get a lot of press at first so I'll be able to hit it up. who knows!
September 20, 2011 4:57 PM - Kensingtonian
How the heck do you build a full restaurant kitchen and pay rent and off to all the agencies and actually make dough having a 30 seat restaurant? I always wondered that. I can understand how David Chang makes it charging 130 beans a pop and carrying limited menu but how do places like this make it?

September 20, 2011 5:00 PM - dibs
Most restaurants fail for just that sort of reason.

Yes, booze.

What does froyo cost, maybe $4.00?? If we give it a 75% gross margin, they have to sell 1,200 of them a week just to pay the rent, not counting utilities or staff!!!!!!

dh, thanks! I will let my cousin know.

Midtown is incredible with the UN in session. I went from Grand Central to the West Side around 3 pm and there was a parade of police cars one after another after another from east to west. Maybe 20 or 25. I think the NYPD does a great job during these things. I did take a cab because I was a little late and the driver was beside himself, a young East Asian guy saying that he made no money today.
