Does Maly hang out in these parts?

I owe some money.

From the 6/21/11 HotD thread:

boerumhill
The bet ($5 effectively - that's the price of a latte, or a moonface single scoop ice cream cone) is as follows:

1) In contract by Labor Day without a price chop, I win. Closing price (which won't show up for months doesn't matter.
2) Any price chop for any amount, you win.
3) Still on the market by Labor Day, you win.

Open bet to anyone who wants to take it.

So I'm assuming netflix's stock has been tanking the past few weeks. That's typically the only reason a CEO would send out a desperate apology email.

Qwikster dh. I just read the email. Why would you screw around even further with teh brand after you PO'd your customers. What also worries me, reading between the lines, is that they may end up being two web pages. Do you have to look up a movie twice? Once for dvd queue and once for streaming? It's like after annoying everyone with New Coke, Coke decided not to call it Coke anymore and move the product to the bread aisle. I have almost zero business instinct and even I know this is stupid. Anyway, I can't chat much, today.

Poets have to have the biggest egos of any artists. I was at the Brooklyn Book Festival Sunday, and while I was waiting, poets on the main stage. The first is the 'poet laureate' of Brooklyn. Her first poem 'took ten years to write, she's been writing it since 9/11, and it's about life, death, and love'. Whatever. Her next was 'inspired by the Haitian earthquake'.

After her was the 'youth poet laureate of Brooklyn'. He's learning well, he writes poetry cuz 'he wants to inspire civic engagement' and 'register youth to vote'.

Gimme an effin' break, it's only poetry.

DH, I disregarded the expert opinions here and shorted NFLX at 244. thought their price hike would hurt them but was banking on them getting killed via the big increase in cost of their content deal renewals so their subscriber fcst revision last wk was a pleasant early surprise gift to me
#14
September 19, 2011 9:18 AM - Slopefarm
yes, dh, brand recognition and the convenience of managing two ways to access videos at once. If I have to navigate two sites, a streaming site and a rental site, they don't both have to be netflix. I think they make themselves more vulnerable to competitors.

what's mind boggling is the same people who are bitching and moaning about a small increase for netflix dont bat an eye lash at 10 dollar a scoop ice cream and ridiculous prices on things like coffee. wtf? how do you think people who make those movies are going to make money? and dont say you can say the same about the moonface food industry, it is NOT the same.

I was not brave enough to short NFLX, but I did sell my position at a nice gain a few months back.
All the analysts are saying how smart this move is, but it seems dumb to me.

I don't want to have accounts with a dvd mailing company and an internet streaming company.
I want to have an account with a company that can let me watch stuff at home.

I went to the Brooklyn Book Festival for the first time over the weekend. I really enjoyed it, but I had no idea how many events are associated with it. Next year I plan better.

DCB, I didn't want to get into the economic summit here yesterday but agree the extention of funds by FED to IMF is really scary. The Occupy Wall Street crowd has dwindled apparantly to 200 people. The NYPD can go back to other things; the stragglers will be shoved out of the way by commuters.

Hi Denton, yes I did see Cervantes and spoke to them. I am being a little creative with the Spanish now - no classes but will take the qualifying exam in Nov (it's like Toefl). My "class" became dominated by a guy who spoke like Bloomberg.

I think I might have seen you waiting on a line to get an autograph inside the courthouse, but I was on line upstairs for a panel. (Heard Senator Lieberman talk about a book he wrote on religious observance along..he was on a panel with a local Rabbi and minister). And regarding planning, I know about the tickets and the running around, but at least if I were more prepared I would have gotten there earlier and made some choices (wished I had heard Mary Carr at St. Francis). Generally, I thought it was wonderful, but did get to hear a few pompous, silly people.

A lot of authors are pretty bad at reading their own stuff. Also, a lot of the time the people in the audience either haven't read much, think it's just a big scene, or want to try to talk with the author for something of their own. When I get books signed, I always say, "Thanks for staying so long, I know it's difficult."

Hi all;

Getting ready to go to the airport. Had coffee in a local cafe' a few minutes ago. Picked up yesterday's Sunday Times "Week in Review" section. I wish I had taken it for framing. The lead story reveals all anyone needs to know as to why the NYT circulation is decreasing.

The lead story is a piece by Gail Collins, reviewing Rick Perry's Texas ways. Rich. Gail Collins - only second to Maureen Dowd in East Coast provincialism and elitism, reviewing Rick Perry.

The piece tries to make the case that Mr. Perry is highly provincial and only knows the world of Texas. It makes the case that we've had no other president who has been so provincial, and notes that "W" at least went to Harvard and Yale for 5 years. In the case of Mr. Perry, it notes that other than 5 years in the military - with duty in Germany and Saudi Arabia - he's never had experience outside of Texas.

Rich. Super Rich, NYT style. If Mr. Perry had spent 4 years at one of the IVYs rubbing shoulders with the "right people" llike Ms. Collins, she might have a better opinion of him. But 5 years in the military serving overseas? Doesn't rate.

God these people need a life.

M4L, thanks for posting the NY Post article on pedestrians killed by cyclists. I really need to do something about the NYC cycling policy because this has been eating at me for 2 years. I believe that it is irresponsible in the extreme, this NYC Khan/Bloomberg endorsed biking promotion/ bike lanes push. I think the whole program is based on a pipedream, that the city has been very aggressive spending money on this and it is a total head fake. It presumes a perfect world not only where everyone plays by the rules, but where there are no commercial deliveries, no cabs stopping in bike lanes, no construction, no garbage in the street, nobody trying to park a car crossing a bike lane, no sump holes, etc. etc. etc. I think it is insane that we instituted this policy and guess what people, it is only for half a year, since we have SEASONS here. This thing called W I N T E R. I can say this here because there isn't any psychotic jaguar or what's his name....the mace swinging psycho forgot his name, the one who used to post on OT.

For those who don't want to read through the insufferable article, here is the "money quote":

"His son (Gearge W. Bush) was much more of a Texas product, but his parents sent W. off to boarding school to erase some of the evidence.

RICK PERRY has never spent any serious time outside of Texas, except for a five-year stint in the military. Nobody sent him off to boarding school to expand his horizons."

Dona, I'm in midtown a lot and the bike lanes are used by the delivery guys. I suppose it is a plus to have them on the lanes than on the sidewalk. However it does seem like an awfully big municipal program for the sake of delivery people. The non-delivery people I see using the lanes are few and far between.
I think riding a bike is great exercise and can be a great recreational activity. The bike lanes along the waterfront park in Manhattan get a lot of use in nice weather. But in the heart of the Commercial District? It does seem like a lot of trouble to go through to benefit messenger services.
In the residential streets of Brooklyn, where there is less traffic, it seems bicycles can do fine w/out lanes, however, the busy commercial intersections and heavy-traffic streets in Brooklyn, like Manhattan, should be off-limits to bikers. they are really dangerous.

I have mixed opinions on the push to improve the bike access, but the city had hardly been "very aggressive" spending money here. The bike lanes and related improvements supposedly are less than 1% of the DOT's capital plan. When that's combined with generally better traffic control (like PPW), I find myself in favor of it and not unhappy that my guy lost in the 2009 election.
September 19, 2011 12:53 PM - boerumresident
Wouldn't the better answer to be separated lanes rather than making them off-limits?
September 19, 2011 12:54 PM - denton
minard and dona, you are missing the point. By building infrastructure for cyclists it encourages cyclists to get out there. The more cyclists there are, the more they will be seen as legitimate part of the traffic flow. If motorists learn to look for and expect bicyclists, then everyone will be safer.

Messengers and delivery people used to make up the majority of cyclists. No more. Walk by any bridge in rush hour and look at the incredicble flow of cyclists, most of whom are not messengers.

Oh, please Benson, Gail Collins is expressing one woman's opinion, her own. How that becomes a policy point of the Democratic party is certainly a stretch, as she is not a candidate, official of the party, or spokesperson of the party.

Most of the people who bike to work -and there are not that many- do so mostly because of the "cool factor". Once they get a little older and the cool factor diminishes, we will be back to zero. The next generation will probably look at bikes, like tattoos, as what the old folks liked.

There is nothing that can convince me that this push for urban biking, i.e. sharing almost all streets except for highways-- is a good idea. I think that if you are a person who believes in what your eyes tell you and not what is written in the Small earth handbook for daydreamers, you will see that the bike lanes have created an illusion of safety and has made driving in this city terrifying. And commercial traffic is NOT a little postscript, ala delivery guys. There is a whole secondary unwritten set of rules in this city. Where commercial traffic will not get busted for double parking for example. There is a whole set of unpublished rules for double parking on cleaning days. Everyone double parks in this city, or should I say "stands". We struggle to get streets fixed, potholes filled. And this city NEEDS its commerical traffic. There are plenty of places to ride a bike for exercise, but to encourage sharing major NYC roads is insanity in my book.

Not to put too fine a point on it.

Benson, unlike you, I can tell the difference between one person's opinion and the policies of an entire political party. If an op ed piece was written by the head of the RNC, then I would say that was the opinion of the party. If if was written by Joe who happens to be a Repub, then no.

I read her piece, yesterday, long before you did, and you are taking most of it out of context. Her so called "Money Quote" is one sentence in a long piece, and not anywhere near her central point. Her comment about boarding school was to contrast him to Bush, and she never said anything about the "elites" requiring boarding school from presidential candidates.

True, Scott. That's the point. If they can't/won't enforce any rules, why on earth do they even create them. Just to give the illusion of order. And it points to the reality of NYC. For a long time, in its own wacko way, there HAS BEEN a kind of order to what is enforced (i.e. the whole unwritten rules of double parking for example). Drivers are aggressive here, but it is hard to flaunt rules eggregiously. You WILL get a ticket for going through a stop sign, a red light, making an illegal turn. Think about the demands on cops now. There are less of them, crime is up. THEN you dump this whole bike thing on them and the whole thing is overwhelming. If they were serious, they would have the bikes registered, they would give big tickets, they would prevent people from riding bikes who are infirm, crazy, don't know the traffic rules and or don't give a shit. But this bike program has not been a serious enterprise from the start otherwise they would handle it like in the Netherlands, il.e. register bikes, get a license and ticket/confiscate the bikes of rule breakers.

*************ASKING A FAVOR********************

My cousin's son is looking for a share. He just graduated from grad school (was in Scotland for 5 years) and back to the USA and wants to live in Brooklyn. He is going through a little of what cobble is going through, only he is just learning about hoods and needs a place in a couple of weeks. He is a very nice guy, smart, funny, well socialized. I don't know quite how to help him...... Craigs list has been full of creepy things. I just gave him a run down on the various neighborhoods, so far he is striking out. Does anybody have any ideas?

Donna, would he have about 18K for a downpayment? (borrowed from parents maybe?) There is a really cheap first floor studio for sale now for 89K in my building. The owner is older guy who is desperate to sell and move to Florida. Hence the cheap price. Maintenance is 500 so after the downpayment, he is looking at maybe spending 900 for mortgage plus maintenance and that'll be tax deductible.

I don't hate the French, but it doesn't stop me from posting jokes about them:

Why wouldn't the Statue of Liberty work in France? Because she has only one arm raised.

What do you call a french man killed defending his country? ... I don't know either, its never happened!

Do you know what's the difference between a Frenchman and a chimpanzee ? - One of them is hairy, stinky, and scratches his ass all the time. The other is a chimpanzee.

Did you hear that the Post Office had to recall its series of stamps depicting famous Frenchmen? People were confused about which side to spit on.

Whats the best place to hide your money?
A. under the soap of a Frenchman

Did you hear about the Frenchman who lost his licence to practice medicine? He was caught having sex with some of his patients. It's a shame, he was by far the best vet in town.

Why wasn't Jesus born in France? Because they couldn't find three wise men or a virgin.

Q. Did you hear about the French hockey team?
A. They all drowned in spring training.

Hi, everyone,

Too little time to chime in on everything today, so just two quick points: 1. Ironically, disqus would not recognize my login to comment on Kael's thread; 2. Huntsman name-checking Cobain/Nirvana is the tip of the iceberg. That man can converse intelligently about the collected works of Captain Beefheart. If Obama's going to lose, that's the guy I want him to lose to, and for exactly that reason. Unfortunately, not gonna happen. It's a two way race for GOP nomination and Huntsman is not close to being third, let alone one of the two.

Customers using A, B, C and D train service should expect severe service disruptions due to a water main break in the vicinity of 110th Street and Central Park West. Logistically, there is no real reason why anyone would want to go through the old terminal building other than nostalgia/curiosity.

158 Saint Johns Place GMAP
This brownstone’s reno garnered high praise when it was a House of the Day in May. It almost fetched the asking price of $3,249,000 and went into contract quickly. Entered into contract on 6/1/11; closed on 7/29/11; deed recorded on 8/31/11."

The link you read was written by the same self-serving schmuck who sold a defective bill of IT goods to Jonathan Butler, and MONTHS LATER has yet to properly fix!!!!!! OF COURSE he’s going to blame someone else (or, in this case, blame a whole lotta someone elses). You think he’s going to stand up and admit his own incompetence? No, he’s going to reframe his shoddy work as Brownstoner’s salvation from the marauding hordes.
If anyone took the steering wheel from Mr. B’s hands (besides his pathetic IT team), it’s the advertisers to whom Brownstoner’s now beholden. Brownstoner built his brand by virtue of an active/interactive readership. Having built the brand he now THINKS he can survive without readership. How well did that work in Philadelphia...hmmm?
crownmolding, I suspect you’re a sockpuppet for one of the blankslate team (hence the royal “we”, as in “Dave, we are glad you are here too”). Is Royal-We-World so taken with themselves that they can’t recognize the foolishness in believing that readership can be directed or diverted at will? Or so arrogant that, in lieu of engagement, they’d not only make a bunch of vibrant, amusing, disputing “minions” get out and walk, they’d actually throw them under the bus and roll over repeatedly?
And, btw, if this thread is too stoopid to deserve comments, or too likely to detract from “interesting” threads, let me guess at the inspiration for posting... "

""I have no idea what 11217 means with reference to me. Isn't that a zip code in Boreum Hill?"

Crownmolding, no, 11217 was a long-time poster who constantly posted Park Slope comps in the HOTD . . . just like YOU did in today's HOTD in fact:

"This is my dream house. I love everything about it.

It seems CHEAP considering 158 Saint Johns:

2. PARK SLOPE $3,220,000

Seriously, I pretty much agree with vinca, and with what dibs, bx and denton said on the streetfight thread. I am being a little contrarian, and not really all that serious, on the issue of why keep fighting this or looking for fingerprints on the moulding in furtherance of a conspriacy theory. And i really take issue with Kael's post in part because there are many ways, with little effort, that Mr. B could have salvaged a decent OT and kept a good chunk of this community engaged while getting it toned down a bit. For starters, some explicit, concrete ground rules about what would get a post taken down and what would get you banned. Much easier to enforce than unreviewable discretion on an "I know it when I see it" basis. Anyway, I think I'm being contrarian partly so I don't get worked up about it all over again myself.

Funny thing is, I wasn't all the pissed because he shut it down. The OT and brownstoner, much as I enjoyed them, were not huge elements of my life. And like denton, I do understand his thinking. It was his blog, he pays for it, he puts in the time to maintain it- he can do what he wants. But the sanctimonious blather about why he shut it down and the toxic comments were really despicable. If we were so toxic and awful, why did he personally email us to ask for our help in testing the site? Fine if he wanted to close down the OT- but be a man about it, and a professional. And don't unleash your not overly competent webmaster to try to make himself (and you) look good at our expense. That I found unforgivable. I was even going to recommend Kael to a friend who needed a rather complicated website- one I felt was beyond what I could realistically do. I'd rather scratch my eyes out with walnuts first.

the exterior of dave's house is lovely, but it probably should be painted or stained a nice brownstone color to even it out.
Perhaps leave the basement facade natural, and paint the upper floors to match it as closely as possible. That usually works very well. I have no qualms about painting brownstone especially when there are stucco portions or patches. Painting brownstones has been done in Brooklyn for over a hundred years. I only recommend painting in the same color as the original stone.

September 19, 2011 7:20 PM - dibs
Minard, I explained this before to you. All the brownstone was repaired. Most of the facade was fine but parts weren't and so there's a blotchiness in areas. All the lintels and sills are done and everything was replaced from top of stoop down.

DAVE......I said I didn't want to argue with you because you are a good guy, although way to forgiving of 11217. I know you probably met him once and he had cute buns.
Anyhoo my friend, the term "brownstoning" really means stuccoing. Since the quarries that supplied brown sandstone have long been shut down and in most cases built over by the burbs, and since the stone was crap to begin with, almost all repairs of brownstone fronts in brooklyn are done with stucco. Layers of stucco with the upper layer tinted brown to approximate the color of the natural stone. Now don't call me pedantic,I know a little about this. We are every lucky in Brooklyn to have had expert craftsmen from Italy and Spain, who have worked stucco for centuries to make it look like stone, and today we have their apprentices who are mostly from non-European countries following the age old craft of working stucco. The original brooklyn brownstoners have long since retired in luxury to their villas in the old countries.

September 19, 2011 7:45 PM - dibs
Actually, stuccoing is a different process that uses metal lathe as a base for the cement. "brownstoning" is a completely different process. The deteriorating stone is chipped off and then sratch and multiple finish coats are added. Not the same as stuccoing.

I know. I actually had it done.

who cares if mr. b gets "gloaty" over it? the point is for folks to finally air their grievances in a manner that is more direct and actually counts.

I'm hoping bxgrl will get a 'guest' columnist spot on StreetFight.

somehow i don't see that happening, but it would be nice.
September 19, 2011 8:03 PM - DeadCatBounce
Snappy, legal question. Is Mr. B's right to ban absolute? Could he reasonably be expected to post a code of conduct and adhere to it? Since he is inviting public comment, is there a first amendment right that applies to posters?
September 19, 2011 8:06 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
DCB, when he first did the changes to the site and included blankslate/disqus, he posted rules of conduct. We all literally laughed at and about it the very first day we saw it. In that sense, he could claim we were forewarned, however I still feel the OT was supposed to be the place for all the off-limits convo. He clearly changed the rules on that without telling us - or rather he told us after the fact (when he shut down the OT), but there isn't anything actionable here. His blog, his rules. The rules may have sucked, but still his decision.
September 19, 2011 8:06 PM - bxgrl
They haven't answered yet. Snaps- I emailed copes to Kael and Mr. B today after I posted in the comment section. I also asked them why they had to be schmucks about it.

DCB- MM asked what are you talking about? She didn't ask you anything.
September 19, 2011 8:11 PM - DeadCatBounce
Bxgrl, I asked MM if she might know why I am banned (if I am - might just be technical screw up). I don't think I implied that she asked me anything. Sounds like a communication mix up.
September 19, 2011 8:14 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
Bxgirl, I applaud you for writing to them directly. I've been working on a letter to Mr. B on my own for several days now. I honestly do support the PLUSAs as a whole in the anger towards not what he did, but the way in which he did it. The only thing I've disagreed with through the course of this is the indirect complaints made over here that get nowhere. As things sink in, folks are getting understandably angrier. I too am far more offended and reactionary than I was that first day it was announced that the OT would be no more. I just don't see the point to talking about it ad nauseum over here instead of saying the stuff to Mr. B himself. If we're gonna swing, let's swing and connect instead of swinging and missing.
September 19, 2011 8:19 PM - minard lafever
My theory by the way, is that Mr. B. was trying to emulate "Curbed"
they eliminated comments a long time ago. and now I think comments are tweeted?
Anyway, I think Curbed had A LOT TO DO WITH IT.
It's all about the business plan you know?

Curbed still has comments, Minard. They're sort of visually minimized, but they are there.
September 19, 2011 8:24 PM - CGar
Snappy, sometimes it's just fun to vent and say I-told-you-so for the sake of doing it and nothing more. To me, today, in the gentrification thread, was one of those times. I personally have no interest in airing grievances to Mr. B. As you said, his site, his rules. I am annoyed that he and Kael have publicly - 3 times now - blamed us and the OT for all of Brownstoner's problems. But, I'd rather air our side of the story in a NY Magazine article - bookending the article on the What -- than to Mr. B. But, that's just my view.

"But let's not hear all this sanctimonious crap about 'community management and development' and just admit it's about advertising and more advertising. "

I loved denton's quite on the StreetFight post. (MWAH!!!! denton!)
September 19, 2011 8:29 PM - cobblehiller
Who else are we going to talk to about it?

I agree, it's good to vent/talk about it. It was handled very badly, and we have every right to be affronted when we are publicly used as a whipping post , while in reality, Mr. B just wants to kowtow to his advertisers, but doesn't want to look like a sell out to the segment of readers he also caters to...the wealthy and hipsters.
September 19, 2011 8:31 PM - CGar
Exactly, cobble. And it's not like we've been going on about this the whole time. To me, it's perfectly understandable that the debate starts again when we discovered the Apartment Therapy interview and then Kael's article. They're the ones who have continued to bash us for the site's problems 2 months after we folded up our tents and moved to another campground.

im sorry but that is just sad!! havent you ever been kicked out of somewhere or not wanted for reasons that were made very clearly! i thought they seemed like they were stated pretty obviously. his website is an advertising and real estate website these days to prop up mediocre brooklyn neighborhoods. it's very obvious. it's like that episode of strangers with candy where they turned the high school into a mall on the last week of the school year but kept denying it was a mall! but everyone KNEW the school was turned into a mall, and they all got kicked out the last day. duh !!

Minard,
I've told this story once before on the OT.
It has to do with my first introduction to a beautiful home when I was a child.
My parents came to know a Chilean urologist who lived in Manhattan.
I recall going to his home on a couple of occasions, I couldn't have been more than 6. I vaguely remember the brownstone facade but clearly remember the iron fencing in front.
The home was across from Gramercy park. I only learned that name much later in life.
The first floor had a huge sweeping staircase which is the image most etched in my memory. In particular because the doctor's daughter came down those stairs when I first arrived and offered me a curious gift, one of those change makers that the ice cream vendors used to use. I held on to that present for years.
The home was several stories with rooms that had different themes, including a type of solarium with tall plants and one with zebra prints all over the place.
The home made such an impression that I've loved brownstones ever since.

My favorite scene in Gangs of NY, is when during the draft riots (well explained by Montrose in several essays) the rioters crash through the front windows of rich families' brownstones. The ladies in their huge dresses rush upstairs and the men smash the glass cabinets to get their rifles to repel the riff-raff.
The scenes where Cameron Diaz works as an expert pick pocket are good too but the movie as a whole is way too long and way too bloody.

There is no question in my mind that crownmolding is 11217.

There is nothing wrong with people going over to the gentrification thread to call him out, especially given his comments on the End of the OT.

I really didn't pay much attention to 11217 since his posts were usually whiney.
My main impression of him was of being very thin skinned and prone to blogociding.
Which makes the appearance of crownmolding on the last OT thread particularly interesting in terms of timing.
Everyone knows that 11217 avoided the OT like the plague because he couldn't stand the heat.
He also had the longstanding feud with *rob*.

It does seem too much of a coincidence that this gonad, crownmolding, suddenly showed up on the OT the last day, having never ventured there before.

An intervention for me, Minard??? Whatever for?
September 19, 2011 9:17 PM - cobblehiller
Yes, I think that's the point, legion. 11217 disappeared, and at the public flogging of the OT/PLUSAs...crownmolding appears. Coincidence? We think not.
September 19, 2011 9:18 PM - Biff Champion
"I was taken aback by ENY's post, too."

nh?
September 19, 2011 9:18 PM - Legion
What!
ENY is badmouthing us?
I'm gonna have to read this now. What thread is that?
September 19, 2011 9:18 PM - cobblehiller
I saw that ENY post. I was a little surprised, but not really since he never came over here, did he?

Yeah, I was surprised by that ENY thing as well. Came out of nowhere. Maybe we should invite him over here?
September 19, 2011 9:21 PM - CGar
I invited ENY to come over a here a couple of times. (nh)

eny has always had a big chip on his shoulder.
as for bs, it's odd how he doesn't seem to think he needs posters, just readers as most of his news is just re-hash from publications.

DeLepp. Look who else the invisible cat dragged in.

And who the hell is Maggie???
September 19, 2011 9:24 PM - minard lafever
an intervention what for????
you count down the number of bottles -I'm thinking little mini airplane bottles -of wine you're drinking.
and they surpass the number a person can drink without going into a coma.
well?

September 19, 2011 9:24 PM - Arkady
He is looking for comments otherwise he wouldn't have put up that Tweet thing today.

maggie smith won an emmy last night, did you go straight to montero's after 8 bottles?
September 19, 2011 9:25 PM - CGar
LOL, Minard. I wasn't drinking them alone. It was just a typical 7-hour "brunch" with dave and George Gobel.

The gentrification thread wasn't the first time ENY seemed to turn on the PLUSAs. I think he did it on the End of The World Thread as well.
September 19, 2011 9:28 PM - CGar
Oh, is THAT what you were talking about?! I couldn't fathom. No, I went straight home.

I couldn't drink any more after you threw money at me like I'm some cheap whore.
September 19, 2011 9:28 PM - bxgrl
Yeah- ENY was surprising.
September 19, 2011 9:28 PM - minard lafever
the three of you drank that much wine?
Now we are going to have three interventions?
I'm going to have to clear my calendar.

8 mini airplane bottles of wine wouldn't cause a coma, or any adverse effects beyond a headache the following day.

etson, that's eight full glasses of wine.
Major headache.

It will be ugly, but it's tough love.

8 BIG bottles? Oh good lord! That's way too much for 3 people. Tell me you had other guests with you?
September 19, 2011 9:33 PM - CGar
What cobble said, Minard. When making "brunch" plans with dave, I block off the entire day on my calendar.

Last time, recall, I was photographed by Snappy looking even worse than usual by Arkady's pool.

ENY is ok, I like him, but he told me I was being petty on the day of the massacre. I am not surprised by what he said today. He would regularly say stuff like he had no desire to meet anybody. But his nice part comes out when he is talking about the yankees. He agreed today that the thread Jon B. put up was a new low. Crownmolding or whatever was a real shit on the last day. Outright mean. Whoever he (or she) is. But of course, I am trying not to carry on about this (is this getting funny to anyone? Are we being obsessive or what?)

Minard, Montero's is a perfect spot to stage an intervention. We can do St. Germain shots.
Edited at September 19, 2011 9:36 PM

...back from reading the thread,
ENY's statement doesn't surprise me that much.
It seems in line with sentiments he posted in the past. Although he posted quite a bit in the OT, he always made a point of standing apart.
Saying something to the effect of:
"why would I want to meet you guys offline? I'm not interested in making more friends that those I have."

He got along with the other regulars for the most part, but it always stayed online only.
September 19, 2011 9:37 PM - cobblehiller
Minard, Planning an intervention with that group would probably only lead to us being bound and force fed alcohol until we puked!

Andy, like most normal people, only consumes HUMAN QUANTITIES!
September 19, 2011 9:37 PM - BoerumHillScott
I could probably drink 8 bottles of wine with 2 other people over 7 hours and not have any ill effects the next day, if it were white wine.

More than a bottle and a half or so of red wine for me, and I will be feeling it the next day.

8 drinks for me spread out over 5 hours is close to how much I put down at the average PLUSA gathering, and I 've never had any ill effects the next morning.

September 19, 2011 9:37 PM - CGar
"why would I want to meet you guys offline?"

Truer words were never spoken.

I'm other way round. Red wine affects me much less than white.
I couldn't drink that much white wine anyway because of taste rather than alcohol content. 1-2 glasses max.

September 19, 2011 9:42 PM - Donatella

I'm Irish American and I think I can say pretty authoritatively that the Irish have a passionate relationship with alcohol. Either it is a problem, or you are constantly dealing with someone who has a problem (most Irish women fit into that category) or you are trying not to have a problem or you used to have a problem or you decided to never have a problem (like A, B, C, D in your life) so you never drink. There is almost no such thing as a neutral attitude toward alcohol.
September 19, 2011 9:43 PM - Donatella
Denton WHAT IS STREETFIGHT. Is that the article where the bad IT guy trashed the OT?
September 19, 2011 9:45 PM - cobblehiller
8 drinks and no effect? Cripes! I can drink 2 glasses on ice in the evening at home or 3 glasses of white wine on ice at a party. Maybe 4 at a party over 4-6 hours, but that's the outside limit and with 4 I know I will suffer the next day. And I hate when that happens!

I can think of few people who would be great in remake of Days of Wine and Roses.

last year I like Black Swan, Kids are All Right, Winters Bone, Rabbit Hole, Kings Speech.
I don't like romantic comedies, too much violence, scifi.

Kings Speech-------->try Orlando

i dont think ive ever had a real hardcore hangover in my life, or even a slight one. im usually chary of people who claim to have them. i think it's just guilt or something or people just looking for sympathy and attention. is a hangover basically a giant headache? ive never really gotten physical headaches.. mental ones yes, but not a real physical one. of course you probably need an actual brain to get a headache.

I happen to be a fan of Marlene Dietrich. I like Judgment at Nuremberg, and Witness for the Prosecution, as well as Destry Rides Again. She was the quintessential Movie Star.
I like Greta Garbo in Ninotchka and in Queen Kristina-two very different movies.
Jimmy Stewart in Harvey and in practically anything else he was in
And one of my all time favorites and a must-see for any Brooklynite: "Arsenic and Old Lace" with Cary Grant.
