Does she have live-in staff, like what I saw last night on Remains of the day? I dare say, from her puns she's probably a Nazi sympathizer like Lord Darlington.

Scott not up yet? How much alcohol did he drink last night?

I love the new avatar, e-hubby.

Morning, dave.

I'm guessing Arkady's live-in staff is similar to mine. I have a cook, a housekeeper, a personal shopper, a maintenance person and laundress. People tend to confuse them with me, which is simply insufferable! : P

cobble- it must be the uniforms. I have told you over and over again, you cannot expect respect as landed gentry if you dress like the maid. Get rid of the frilly apron.
#14
September 16, 2011 8:44 AM - cobblehiller
I left off masseur, gives really great foot rubs! How could I forget him?! : P My driver is also excellent, apart from running the odd red light, he doesn't tailgate, which pleases me. The gardner on the other hand is a bit of a slacker. I often find her lounging on a deck chair staring off into space. No amount of threatening to fire her seems to motivate her! : P

September 16, 2011 8:45 AM - dibs
I thought they were live-in. Where did they fly in from??? You shouldn't allow your staff out and about mingling with the middle class. They'll likely get notions that they have rights or can vote; things that, as we've seen with the present administration, typically don't favor the landed gentry

WHERE ARE THE BRITS???????

From a friend of mine.....

"Good to see the Tories are back in form. Photos surface of the chancellor with his arm around a black tart with a line of white powder on the table in front that looks like Bolivian marching powder but apparently is dust. Even better the black whore in question actually ran a dunegeon mistress service called black beauties…(prompting the lead of the opposition to ask at PMQs if the chancellor was “lashed” to his policy…

This is what need from the tories…go back to the happy days of cabinet ministers found in nylons and oranges in unusual places and senior pols fathering numberless bastards…

That's probably it, M4L. Someday when I am feeling like a real hypocondriac, I'll get tested. This time of year is pretty bad. I read somewhere that you suffer the worst allergies around the time of your birthday. Legion - That guy has always dissented. His basic point is over vocabulary & I think the committee did make an error by using 'incontrovertible' but they did it because they're trying to avoid the kinds of undermining creationists do by misuse of the word "theory" about evolution. While science tries to phrase things w/o absolutes, crackpots label that as meaning things are in doubt at base - which they aren't.

Plus his statement:"means to me is that the temperature has been amazingly stable, and both human health and happiness have definitely improved in this 'warming' period," is hardly incontrovertible either. Health, maybe. Happiness? He must not read newspapers or psychology reports.

True,
Arkady, the physicist objected to the idea that the theory was without question.
He also made the point however, that such absolute terms are rarely used in science because of the nature of scientific inquiry.
The larger question here is the reason for his departure, is science being corrupted by politics?

DEEP THOUGHTS:

I was thinking about creationism while driving the other day.

I understand that this is controversial because it has been mentioned in regards to certain Presidential candidates.
For some reason, I felt a gnawing lack of logic in the argument that ; because a person, let's say a Presidential candidate, believes in the idea of creationism as it relates to how we are here as humans, that person is lacking in mental reasoning from a purely scientific viewpoint.

Then it struck me as I recalled readings into quantitative vs. relativistic physics.
There is a large and uncertain understanding in physics itself, a black hole if you will, and it has to do with the way everything we take for granted from science, down to the purest mathematics, begins to unravel at the idea of singularity.

Scientists understand that there is this large gap in understanding, even admitting that they don't know why our ideas can't form a bridge between the atomic world and the visible physical world.

In short, what we accept as an explanation for physical reality rests on shifting sands with no connection to repeatedly observed principles.

Yet, we do not categorize scientists as lacking in fundamental reason.

dibs,
I am completely for a separation of church and state and it's one of the reasons for my argument against Sharia law.
The argument I am positing here is aimed at the somewhat insidious notion that personal religious beliefs are a valid determinant of one's ability to reason in the "real" world.

Cobble, is Bed Stuy on your approved hood list? the rents in Stuy Heights seem pretty reasonable - ie nice sized good condition 1 bdrms list for 1200-1400 and occasionally 1500-1600 gets you a 2 bdrm. that area puzzles me why rent is that low compared to nearby crown heights north which feels like ~$150-$250 higher for comparable stuff

legion, you are extending an argument through pure logic and analogy that ai do not think is worth picking apart on those terms. My experience and observation is that candidates who tend to espouse some form of creationism and a public disdain or skepticism of evolution as "theory" (in the lay sense of the word) are probably more likely to discount scientific knowledge and methods more generally as valuable in setting policy or worth pursuing or teaching. It is a marker in my view for candidates who would like to bring more Christian and perhaps fundamentalist teaching, prayers, etc. into public schools. I don't see why a pol who accepts evolution and evolutionary processes as the current state of our scientific understanding but can't quite grasp quantum physics would be suspect in that regard.

This whole alarm about sharia law in the US is such a false bogeyman. The threat of a legislature adopting sharia law or of a court following it in lieu of federal and state laws and judicial common law precedent is a factual nonstarter.

bxgrl and slopefarm,
I think our system of governance has a valid and effective method of weeding out ideas and positions out of tune with society at large while still protecting the rights of the individual.

I don't argue that you can't pick apart a candidate's positions outside of their religious beliefs and hold them accountable for attempts to impose their views on the public domain,
I am arguing that to dismiss an individual's ability to reason wholesale based on religious views is in itself illogical.

Agree about Sharia law. I don't know where this concern comes from. I do not see it as even a remote threat. I think that the US is a kind of model for the integration of diverse religions, simply because of our existing legal system which is tolerant of a whole range of religious behavior within a certain framework. BTW, I learned something about Sharia finance - investments using commodities to make money which is not overtly interest. It is just an indirect way of earning interest. It is a kind of nonsense in my book. I don't worry about creationism too much. If you want an overtly religious teaching send your kid to a religious school. And most likely if you are a politician who is making a big deal of your creationist beliefs while Rome is burning [and we have separation of Church and State], I am not voting for you.

Arkady, do any of the current Presidential candidates believe that the world came into being around the time of the Sumerians?

But just by extension, here's the opposing argument on a Presidential candidate who is an atheist (mind you, as far as I know all the previous democrat presidents espoused some sort of religious belief):

"If someone is convinced that the world they live in is exactly what they see when they wake up, I don't trust him/her to make any sensible judgements about anything, for they leave no room for the unpredictable."

And I don't believe that is what people are doing when they react negatively to a candidate who publicly espouses creationism. They are not dismissing the candidate's ability to reason, they are seeing it as a marker for the kinds of policies the candidate will pursue where there is a religious and/or scientific component. It is about views and policies, not intellectual ability.

I agree with slopey, legion. It isn't the fact that they believe in creationism that bothers me. It's the fact that they're willing to bring those beliefs into public policy. We have separation of church and state. These days there are politicians who are increasingly blurring that line. So it isn't their religion I worry about- it's the moral and ethical code of forcing those beliefs on others and through law. I find that neither moral, nor ethical.

It sure seemed there were a lot more lurkers/non-PLUSAs who were against shutting down the OT than were for it. The only real enemy of the OT was crownmoulding, whom I suspect is a bitter regular (with a new login handle) from the old site.

The one thing I'll never understand are the more moderate individuals who said the OT was a distraction...WHY COULDN'T THEY JUST IGNORE IT?

Just to review a little old history, Biff, I am not sure if there were old regulars on the site who influenced Jon. I think the OT galloped off without him and that he didn't like that. It was not what he envisioned the site to be ultimatly and didn't see the relation of the regulars on the OT and the vibrancy of the rest of the site. And seemed to think he could direct traffic. And he was moving toward a more purely commercial business model. I wonder if some of the old regulars maybe got pwned by a PLUSA on the treads, never participated on the OT and harbored some snark. I don't think it matters though. Jon would have pulled the plug anyway.

Biff, I don't know if you saw the link Kens posted last week to Mr. B's September 7th interview with Apartment Therapy, so here it is:

http://tiny.cc/tvk15

At 38:30, he says, "Interestingly enough, in terms of the [Brownstoner] community, the big decision I made recently was, for the last couple of years we had this thing called the Open Thread on the site, which I created a couple of years ago because some of the most vociferous, enthusiastic commenters on the site were sort of hijacking topical threads ... to talk about what movie they went to last night or how much they had to drink, so I decided to put a post up every day to give them a place to talk about that off topic stuff. And, after I guess now like 6 weeks ago I, without any warning, announced that I was taking it away because it had just gotten kind of out of control. There were like 500 comments a day. And there was this kinda small club of people that I felt was kind of sucking all the oxygen out of the room on the site. So ... after keeping a kind of a low profile, that was a huge thing."
Edited at September 16, 2011 1:58 PM
September 16, 2011 2:01 PM - Biff Champion
Dona, well said. I agree with all of that. Having gone on Brownstoner over the past couple of days, it's definitely lost it's mojo (doesn't make me happy to say that). The lack of comments and continuing technical issues have certainly given it a much different vibe from the olden days, when I used to have to walk 20 miles in the snow to post, but I don't think it's the vibe Jon was looking for. It's more the vibe I used to get when visiting my grandmother in the old folk's home (or when I dine in Brooklyn Heights).

Nice, Pete.

Re Brownstoner, it started out with a scrappy sense of fun and discovery and clearly, a love of the wonderful old housing stock in brownstone Brooklyn. But a lot of stuff happened to make that dream, well. less luminous. He had a rough time, like everyone, as he tried to weather the massive market bust. It is one thing to be cheering on the parade from the sidelines with no skin in the game, but when he quit his regular job, he had to make a living of this. And at a really hard time for real estate. As he tried to make it commercially viable, his "brand" changed. I think now it is suffering from a kind of identity crisis. The really interesting thing to me is that he thought he could direct traffic, keep the PLUSAS, just make them post where he wanted. He was probably too close to it all, pretty tired too.

September 16, 2011 2:25 PM - Donatella
Yeah, I think the variety of topics was pretty "broad". We discussed/fought about so many things.... What about this as a metaphor. You open up a shop to sell things and in the corner of the shop, you have a little coffee shop/corner. The people in the corner give liveliness to the shop, they shop sometimes in the shop, they attract others in. Then the coffee corner starts taking over the shop and the proprietor starts thinking "who are these people, what have I done?" So he says no more coffee, the gang in the corner says F U and then the place is deserted and he is back to square one, figuring out what to do. It's ok, he'll probably figure it out. One thing I have to say is that Jon wasn't paying attention. Benson used to say he was phoning it in. If he was paying attention, he would have hid the OT earlier and reached out to people to create a compromise. But it was more like he woke up out of a fog and thought "I hate this. No more". Or he was ambivalent about it for a long time but just didn't know how to deal with people.

September 16, 2011 2:45 PM - Slopefarm
Biff,
I more or less agree with dona's take, although I give Mr. B credit in the early (boom) days for not being a cheerleader. Not a critic, but interested in fostering free-flowing discussion and casting a wry glance and letting the fur fly. I think a few things happened:
1. His business model now is more heavily dependent on RE advertisers. They don't like us.
2. He took a beating from us on the relaunch and we were taking up a lot of his time. Some of us were genuinely trying to help and he would acknowledge that, but he certainly did not want to focus much time or effort on the OT. Here he was trying to get a wonky relaunch to work better and we were pestering him to pull posts. We were also commenting a lot on the site's problems. I am sure it irked him, though many of us think he should have worked out the kinks before relaunching.
3. I think he erred in not being clear and specific about OT ground rules, banning people and pulling posts on an "I know it when I see it" basis. That led to a sense that pulling the OT was arbitrary. We had no warning and didn't know what we needed to do to keep our clubhouse.
4. Time will tell if the site will thrive as a more informational RE site with less vibrant discussion. But that is what it is at the moment.
September 16, 2011 2:45 PM - Donatella
I know CGar, I was thinking that he either was OTL and not paying attention and then realized how active the OT had become (versus inactivity elsewhere) and was freaked. OR he was ambivalent and did know how to approach it and because he lacks social intelligence, he handled it impulsively RATHER than reaching out and doing something more constructive which would have been better for himself.
September 16, 2011 2:45 PM - Biff Champion

It has to be driving Jon up the wall that our new site was up & running so quickly (thanks again, BHS!) & we even had a choice w/ the BHI version (did he get stuck in Switzerland or lost in the forest?). Granted 'Stoner's a lot more complicated but I bet BHS could've had even that smoothed out quickly & before making it active - that was a serious error.

I think Crown Heights North has more of a variety of architecture so maybe the apartments have more square footage with all those double-wide buildings? So many buildings in Bed-Stuy are straight-up brownstones consisting of 1.5-br apartments, with the half bedroom tiny and only accessible via the other bedroom, plus kitchens opening onto the living room. Also people don't want to be stuck with only the A/C lines and Crown Heights also offers to the 2-3-4-5.

That said, if the layout works for you (it does for us!), the 1.5 br can be finel

minard- well, I am of Russian-Jewish heritage :)
September 16, 2011 3:13 PM - Donatella
I think rents are up because it is much harder to buy a place. Banks have the cash and rates are low but that is not equalling to easier to buy. There is more demand for rentals now.

RF, Re BedSty, I saw these places NY Times. There was one smallish broker with very nice apartments and low rents. I wonder if they do the whole bait and switch or advertise fake apartments to get people calling them.

On September 17, 20,000 people will pitch tents and set up kitchens at Chase Manhattan Plaza in an occupation of Wall Street that will last for months -- or at least, that's what the organizers of Occupy Wall Street are hoping for. According to them, the event will involve a couple thousand people dancing to "Thriller," doing yoga in the street, voicing their opinions, sleeping head-to-toe around a few city blocks, and trying not to get arrested.

Tourists are better anarchists than the anarchists themselves. They cause much more disruption on the sidewalks, wandering every which way, walking too slow, spacing themselves 5 across (and they are much wider on average than the typical NYer or the typical anarchist), staring into space, stopping and turning randomly, and they don't know how to twist slightly to ease by people walking the opposite way. Meanwhile, the anarchists are doomed to failure. Ever read John Sayles' "At the Anarchists' Convention"?

I feel sorry for any anarchist who blocks the view of the bull statue. The tourists will throw them in the bowling green fountain.

right, Slopey? I read somewhere that there is this syndrome called sidewalk rage, provoked by people who walk slower than some some extemely fast NY standard. I forgot how many steps per minute is the norm in NY. But tourists are WAY below it. They walk in phalnx, stare up and in certain people provoke a new psychiatric designation, sidewalk rage. There was also some ridiculously large percentage of people who responded to a questionairre saying that they wanted to punch these people in the head.

if there is any lingering doubt in anyone's mind that crownmolding is 11217. read today's windows thread on brownstoner.
He was always obsessed with Norah Jones, and her privacy, and happiness, and well being. We were offensive barbarian to even dare discuss the alterations planned for her house in Cobble Hill. He was clearly emotionally carried away with the topic at the time. Today he revisits those psycho feelings again in a thread about a house in Park Slope.

September 16, 2011 7:09 PM - bxgrl
Minard- but why would he use a new name? He was hardly shy or retiring. Can't see him using a new alias.
September 16, 2011 7:16 PM - minard lafever
I don't know bx. I always suspected he used aliases in threads where he was under attack to appear as if he had allies. New posters would appear from nowhere and say "I agree with 11217, he's a great guy".
He went bonkers a few weeks ago responding to my post requesting that Jon enlarge the images in the "six months later" thread. It was a different alias, but the psychodrama was all his.

I think the demise of the OT had a lot to do with cobble's BFF (does anyone say that anymore? I'm soooo 2007) with the asterisks around his name. He had an uncanny ability to turn any thread into a discussion about himself, and think the OT fed that tendency.

Agree w/ bxgrl about Mr B, though. I watched some of the interview that Kens posted last week. Most interesting thing to me was how Mr B seems to think of himself as a serial entrepreneur and still somewhat of a finance guy. By definition that makes the PLUSA's means to an end at most.
September 16, 2011 7:59 PM - minard lafever
bx, my last post was about jon, not huntsman, LOL!
I don't know a thing about Huntsman except that he was Obama's ambassador to China. I think he is far too normal to ever possibly win any sort of republican primary His association with Obama would make him Pepe le Peu to the tea party types.
I fear that Perry may get the nomination, which means, that this could be the decade that New York is forced to secede from the Union.

MM and I heard that from a LOT of people who never posted, because of him. Maybe the OT did feed his tendency- he did have his enablers. Folks;

I was the one who reported on the 11217 "outing" a few weeks ago. It had nothing to do with the demise of the OT. It happened post OT-demise, and was a thread about a rental in Williamsburg. Someone (not a regular) said that Crownmolding had to be 11217. Crownmolding played dumb - he said something like "Who is 11217?". Then the poster played his bluff brilliantly. He said something like: "I'm glad you're not 11217, because he was the most shrill, pompous Park-Slope-shilling poster ever seen on this site". Soon thereafter, the COMPLETE thread was pulled. Strange going-ons in Brownstonerland.

That is really strange, benson. I take it that was the only comment that was out of whack? You didn't see any other reason Jon would have taken it down?
September 16, 2011 8:22 PM - etson
I don't actually care what the President or any of the candidates thinks about global warming as long as he / she doesn't try to do much about it.
In any case, I am very dubious of the cost / benefit of anything a politician or government could do - i.e. is it worth higher power prices / fewer jobs for 20-30 years to change the temperature by 0.4 degrees.
I have no idea if those are the numbers but nor does anyone else because the argument on both sides seems to be airy and emotional instead of focused on the implcations (+ve and -ve) about anything that might be done.

Don't care enough about what other people think to make a good politician and the pay is lousy if one is clean.
I like Rubio based on what I know, but I don't know much about him.

he also has to learn to say "hasta la vista baby" with an Austrian accent. But even I can do that.

Rubio is a conservative republican and therefore I have my issues with him, but for heaven's sake, he is native born. If the constitution meant that your parents had to be native born, it would read: "president's parents have to be native born".
However the people the founding fathers absolutely meant to exclude were pasty British subjects. That is true.

Yer out Etson!!!

"business people w/out an internal compass about their company often place their trust on consultants, who have no connection to the business or its users and are usually dead wrong."

Bingo, Minard!

etson, I did not know you are a US citizen! I learn something new everyday on this blog! : )

I'm not voting for you, etson! No matter how much I like you! : P

It would be fun to say, I voted for a Pasty Brit. But then I remember you're a republican :( Oh well- I might forgive that if you oil your body and pump iron.

benson- are you going to oil your body and pose with pumped up musculature? You do need the women's vote.
September 16, 2011 10:35 PM - cobblehiller

I just thought of a good campaign slogan:

BENSON: he'll take control of the steering wheel!

I just came back from a party and looked at that article etson posted. I started getting mad all over again. What a jerk that guy Kael is. I thought he had an attitude from the start with the , the OT as a gift thing. Well, they have plenty of oxygen over there now, hands firmly on the steering wheel and it about as interesting as a Laurence Welk rerun.

I wrote to their site and asked them to let me guest post a response since he "quoted" me. Let's see what they say. If not, I'll psot it to his original op piece. I am pretty mad too. Blaming us for his failings- please!
September 16, 2011 11:34 PM - Arkady
It's so dishonest of them not to have mentioned Kael's affiliation w/ 'Stoner.
