I have a personal request: can we please tone down the personal attacks on people?

I'm a big fan of free flowing conversations and heated debates on topics ranging from Atlantic Yards to food products that have been through animals' digestive tracks. I'll even tolerate puns on an occasional basis.

However, there have been several attacks on individual posters made by several people over the last several days, and in my opinion that's just not cool. I've seen sites go downhill quickly once personal attacks become a norm.

When you are angry, irritated, or annoyed at someone, please think twice before posting about them personally.

Agreed, Scott. While this may be a free forum to express ourselves, I think it's high time that we remember that there are real people, individuals with feelings behind the avatars and posts. We came over here ostensibly to continue the virtual community that represents the real community that we have developed offline. We joke that we are like a dysfunctional family that fights like cats and dogs, but this has gone above and beyond anything remotely tolerable. We don't all have to like each other, but dammit, we need to at the very least have enough respect for one another to not let it get to the disgusting level reached in the last few days. Just my .02, spend it how you will.

Ranking the breeches of subway/public etiquette, one is rising to the top of my list. Spaced out readers of magazines, newspapers or books who are standing, not watching where the corners of their reading material are. Yesterday the corner of one guy's large book was 3-5 inches from my eye. (I was sitting.) Do I need a life? Do you scoff at my concern?

Morning, all. I agree about toning down attacks. Saw the bike shares in action in paris a while back. A nice addition here. Saw benson's response to me late yesterday about 9/11 memorial speeches. Happy to let the discussion end there. However, benson did not respond re: moose & evolution. I can safely say I won that argument.

"I was puzzled by Benson's complaint about calling someone an alcoholic. I don't understand how that is considered such a heinous insult."

I have to admit that sometimes I feel like I was born on a different planet when issues like this come up. In my world, to call someone a "nasty alcoholic" on a public forum, and when the person is not there to defend themselves, is just hitting below the belt. It's just so basic to me that I don't even know how to explain it.

If people belive that Rob has been nasty in his posts -then call him out when he is there, and hash it out. You don't just drop in on a conversation when he is not there and cast such aspersions.

Imagine if a newcomer came to this site and saw that comment. You think he or she would be willing to join, knowing that there is a possibility that it will come to this?

These is a tendency on the part of some posters, including the administrator, to protect and defend Rob, who makes the most outrageous and offensive comments on a daily basis. His aim may be to be banned so he can play the martyr or worse, to destroy the blog. It seems fairly obvious to me.
I have been insulted, by the administrator and others, when I have complained about the content of his posts. I was told "not to read them" which is like saying "drop dead". I do not understand this enabling behavior. He posts things that are no only factually wrong but aimed to hurt and worry others. I think that is what should concern us.

Under firefox, you can disable images from a site by going to tools-options-content and clicking the "exceptions" box next to "load images automatically"
Enter the the site name and select "block"
This will keep you from seeing any images, including avatars from the site.

I don't know if IE can block images only from a certain site.

Pete and all;

Re: your lake.

Am I the only one who gets upset about how unkempt alot of property is these days? I'm talking specifically about the sumacs sprouting up aroung its rim. Those damn sumacs have become ubiquitous because folks don't maintain their property. And let's not even talk about the highways**. In Westchester County and Jersey, they grow so freely these days that alot of highway signs are now blocked.

BTW: that comment was not directed at Pete. It was a general comment on the ubiquity of the sumac in our region these days. It has become so ubiquitous that they have taken over native species.

DCB, yeah it is something like that. AND the CFTC (commodity regulator) gets to decide how to implement it. I paid money to sit somewhere yesterday to hear what they are thinking of doing in energy alone. Energy is actually the poster child for how things SHOULD work post-Enron. Gov't notices what works, decides to impose it on interest rate trading (not FOREX for some reason) and make a few "changes" to energy which would probably KILL all post Enron reforms. I need a day or two to absorb all the scary shit I heard yesterday. Oh well. Why should I expect a rational world. I need to calm down.

Dona, the regulators have decided they know how to keep banks from failing...by passing zillions of regulations.
It is not there job to keep banks from failing. And they will never accomplish this silly idea no matter how many regulations they pass.
The whole attempt is so misguided it is laughable.
Nobody can regulate failure out of existence.

I am about ready to go postal on another neighbor -- thinking of putting a broom by her door with a note to tidy up). She has whats seems is fulltime help inside -- but outside is pigpen.

Yes, Benson I can. The purpose of Dodd Frank is to monitor, record and oversee financial derivative activity across a series of asset classes for the purpose of preventing systemically destabilizing financial activity. This is a laudable goal. The devil is in the details. And in fact, the implementation itself may prove to be destabilizing because it is based on some incorrect assumptions about the markets themselves. AND it is being driven by political sentiment rather than science.
September 15, 2011 1:28 PM - dibs

FINALLY, WASHINGTON ACCOMPLISHES SOME GOOD........

U.S. House Votes to Limit Labor Board’s Powers After Boeing Case

The U.S. house of Representatives passed legislation curbing the powers of the National Labor Relations Board, a move spurred by an April action against Boeing Co. that has become a presidential campaign issue.
The Republican-led House voted 238-186 for the bill, which would bar the board from ordering companies to close, move or open factories when labor laws are violated. The NLRB general counsel said in April that Boeing should start a second assembly line in Washington state after finding the company built a South Carolina factory to retaliate for labor strikes. The measure would apply to pending cases, such as Boeing.
The agency’s proposal against Boeing is “an unprecedented power grab that makes people wonder if we still live in a free country,” Representative John Duncan, a Tennessee Republican, said today during debate. “The actions by the NLRB will stifle economic growth across the country.”

Today's press release: New York City’s adult smoking rate has reached an all-time low with only 14 out of 100 New Yorkers still smoking. This marks a decrease in the number of New Yorkers who smoke by 35 percent since 2002, when the Health Department began its efforts to reduce tobacco use. This translates to approximately 450,000 fewer adult smokers in New York City, with some of the steepest declines registered among Staten Islanders and teens city-wide.

Since the repubs are in the house, y'all should read the NYT review of the Palin book. Hard to see a 'liberal bias' in that review.

"Although most of “The Rogue” is dated, petty and easily available to anyone with Internet access, Mr. McGinniss used his time in Alaska to chase caustic, unsubstantiated gossip about the Palins, often from unnamed sources like “one resident” and “a friend.” "

I am reading the great book Harold McGee that I had mentioned last week. I am loving it. I am finishing up chapter 1 on milk, cream, cheese, butter and ice cream. I think you don't need lactase to digest most cheeses (or the enzyme itself is in the cheese) but maybe ricotta is closer to milk and requires lactose to digest it. Not sure. But the majority of black people are lactose intolerant into adulthood .... so he says.

And many Asians, too, dona.
September 15, 2011 5:28 PM - Donatella
Denton....it's ricotta, but I guess I was just writing it the way a lot of people say it. Including me.

No difference....

It seems that way, Arkady, and so McGee says. Supposedly the only people on the planet who have lactase into adulthood are Northern Europeans, so I get to drink milk my whole life. Even though I need 50 sunblock.
September 15, 2011 5:38 PM - BoerumHillScott
From Wikipedia:

Many people with ancestry in Europe, West Asia, India, and parts of East Africa maintain lactase production into adulthood. In many of these areas, milk from mammals such as cattle, goats, and sheep is used as a large source of food. Hence, it was in these regions that genes for lifelong lactase production first evolved. The genes of lactose tolerance have evolved independently in various ethnic groups. By descent, more than 70% of western Europeans can drink milk as adults, compared with less than 30% of people from areas of Africa, eastern and south-eastern Asia and Oceania. In people who are lactose intolerant, lactose is not broken down and provides food for gas-producing gut flora, which can lead to bloating, flatulence, and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Did y'all read the sugar article on the cover on the NYT mag a coupla months ago? Basically, it argues that sugar is not just empty calories but a real toxin. Now, I was a way over the top sugar eater. A pint of ice cream on the regular, a few candy bars a day while running around Manhattan. The article freaked me out so bad I decided to go cold turkey sugar free. I've lost 15lbs in a few weeks while continuing my other bad habits.

It is really hard to avoid sugar or high fructose corn syrup unless you make every thing you eat. I was sitting at a sushi bar waiting or my meal and happen to look at the container of fish roe. High fructose corn syrup was an ingredient.

Now that's a surprise, BSM!
September 15, 2011 6:04 PM - denton
I know BSM. I know when i stop for pizza, most likely there will be sugar in the sauce. there's also sugar in most bread (that you can control when you shop, of course). And my wife bakes... but I've managed to get her to only do fruit tarts, and to buy riper fruit. You'd be amazed, you can cut the sugar in any baking recipe by 2/3, and in the dough by 1/2. I know you can never get rid of it all, but i figure I can cut 90% out.

The NYTimes did a series of articles on diabetes about 2 years ago. It was terrifying. I had an issue with sugar (hypoglycemia) from teenage years so I always knew about the insulin/mood/weight connection. But my bf was borderline on the adult onset diabetes sugar level. Diabetes is a nightmare on so many levels and excess sugar consumption is directly connected to obesity and diabetes. All processed foods are loaded with sugar. It is true that the more that we can eat fresh foods, the better even just to offset all the random sugar we get from meals we can't directly control.

There used to be a great Pizza place on the UES right near me when I lived up there. The owner explained to me that the difference between great pizza sauce and so-so sauce is the quality of the tomatos. Cheap, poor quality tomatos are too acidic which is offset by sugar. The good stuff is just pure tomato sauce. Who knows what you get really.
September 15, 2011 6:15 PM - Donatella
One of the key factors in the "toxicity" of sugars is the speed with which it is digested. The sugar in an apple takes much longer to be broken down into glucose. Refined sugar is mainlining glucose and the body goes nuts, secreting too much insulin which then inefficiently converts the sugar into adipose (FAT!!!), dropping the blood sugar and causing dizziness, lightheadedness and hunger. SO you eat something that hits you fast (more sugar) and the cycle goes on and on and you get fat and you get sick.

Luckly, I do not have a sweet tooth. I was not given sugar or salt as a baby. All my baby food was homemade. When I was in Jamaica we used natural brown sugar for everything but baking. I still only us it for when baking and just for a few things. I have had the same 5 pound bag of sugar in my pantry for about 4 years now. I am a big label reader. I try not to buy products with sugar, high fructose corn syrup or ingredience I can't easily pronoucne.

"Alcoholism is a serious illness, and using that as the basis for a gratuitous insult is inappropriate."

It wasn't a gratuitous comment, it was an honest assessment based on real life experience with such people. There is no other reason for such venomous and continued personal and nasty attacks on me. I'm just one person, and I'm not a symbol for all that is wrong in the world that rob experiences, and yet, I seem to draw the most ugly, mean-spirited and angry remarks. And few posters, until now, have defended me. I guess it had to get THAT bad. I do not attack unless I am attacked first. I think most will agree with that statement. I don't go trawling the OT to look for things to be nasty or disagreeable about. rob needs to grow up and stop focusing his anger on me. And then I will lay off, but not until.

Sugar in it's many forms is in so many things, it really pays off to read labels. BH and I went off sugar for the month of July just because it seemed like we were having too much and he wants to lose weight and I just thought we were having too many sweets. Curiously enough, other than one or two evenings of ice cream since then, we've stayed off. As Martha Stewart would say...It's a good thing. I've done it off and on in my life since my early 20s. It tends to creep back in, but it's a good to fight it off.

BSM, I noticed in Jamaica that there are few desserts or sugary things, mostly just fruits...and beautiful fresh ones at that.

Eastern europeans have an issue with lactose. I developed lactose intolerance here when I used to love cereal in younger years. Doctor told me it's very common amongst Russians and Asians as their diets do not have much dairy and when they come to states and go on dairy consumption overloads, lactose intolerance kicks in. Usually it goes away by adulthood. I still can't have whole milk or very rich cheeses without crazy stomachaches but I am fine with pizza, ice cream, etc.

The Spider Chronicles : Part II

In last week's installment I described how the kids went on a "spider safari" into the basement only to come face to face with the mother of all spiders.
It took a couple of days to assuage their fears about monster spiders invading our home and more than a few candy bribes to make them venture into the basement again.

Which brings us to this morning when they were all dressed for school and ready to start the morning drive over to school.
So as I get ready to open the front door look what decided to build a web right over our stoop as if to catch us all right on our way out:

When I was a kid in Jamaica, the only processed food I remember eating was cornflakes and that was a treat. Most of the food we ate was picked or killed within hours of consumption. We also had the big meal at lunch and a light supper. It is different now, especially for people in the more ubanized cities. A lot of the food is imported. In the country people still eat a lot of fresh picked or killed food. Most folks have a patch of land where the grow food and raise chickens. Those with more space will have some goats, pigs and cows.

Aspirin is classified as an NSAID
Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug

First in it's class, it's a derivative of Salicylic acid and works well in the relief of aches and pains by inhibition of the body's inflammatory mechanisms.

It will work on body aches, but others like ibuprofen often work better.

I like Excedrin for headaches, it has aspirin, tylenol and caffeine.
For body aches I usually go with Ibuprofen.

The last time I went sailing I had many glasses of scotch (tying themes together). And I didn't even feel them. That is, I had them when I got off the boat after almost 5 hours of being out in a tropical storm. And my "partner" almost fell off the 42 foot boat, the only other person on the boat. And he ripped the mainsail. I was in passive mode; I was invited on the boat, didn't check weather, the captain does that. Started out a beautiful day. When this squall came in, waves were tremendous. I was steering the boat as partner fumbled around and ALMOST FELL OFF. Meaning he didn't strap himself to the boom during the storm. Scott, wow. Hang in there. That place is a mess. Remember that, it isn't you. You are living through a time of upheaval and you are so close to it, you can't see it well. The industry is in an uproar. Dodd Frank is changing everything. But if you go through your emotional stream of being down, pissed, disgusted etc. then realize that the financial services industry has to spend a lot of money on IT refitting systems to totally reclassify financial transactions. Have something to eat and don't miss working out tomorrow!! Did you go today? Was today day #4? So then tomorrow is day #5. Hang in there!!!

Growing up, my mom would fry them for us as a treat, but I bake them for my son.

I really am glad I still have a job still. Lots of layoffs at my company this week.
I am upset that I will no longer being a manager for the first time in over 6 years, and there are more rounds of layoffs on the horizon.

The good news is that I have talked to two headhunters this week, and even if neither of them pan out, it does show that there are jobs in the city that more or less match my skill set.

September 15, 2011 9:08 PM - CGar

September 15, 2011 9:08 PM - minard lafever
They are building the new LIRR tunnel that will bring the LI trains into Grand Central. Seems like a good idea to me.

September 15, 2011 9:09 PM - Donatella
Scott, I was thinking of Enron too recently. I lump Enron together with 9-11 since they happened so close together. That ended my idyllic (ha) life in Kansas City, Missouri and I returned to NYC without a job. You are right. If you lived through that disaster in Houston, you will live through this. I think a person learns how resourceful one can be under tough circumstances. You'll be ok.
September 15, 2011 9:10 PM - lechacal
Crappy idea. That means more people from long island and new jersey working midtown east. I like those people to stay downtown and midtown west.
September 15, 2011 9:11 PM - petebklyn
GC has turned into a shopping mall. They used to have these great wooden seating in waiting room when entered from 42nd st. And huge area of pay phones where the big hudson news is now. Phone booths, phone books -lot of brass.
September 15, 2011 9:12 PM - BoerumHillScott
I think the idea is of the LIRR to Grand Central is great. The tunnel under the East river was put in in the late 60s/early 70s, and the lower level has been unused since then (the upper level is for the F train).

I just wish they could have found a way to use unused/underused tracks and platforms at Grand Central instead of building a new station in a cavern deep underground that will take commuters several minutes to get to the surface.

Oh well, at least it is progress.

reading some past posts... people who are lactose intolerant can't eat ricotta? Seems arbitrary, why ricotta?
Mozarella gives me gas now and then, not that I would let that stop me from enjoying it. But ricotta seems so digestible, Snappy's issue with it must be something else.
I have to say though that I was brought up believing that adults should not drink glasses of milk. It's just not good for grownups. A little milk in coffee yes, but not chugalug glasses of milk. That could make anybody ill.
Grownups should drink beer for their their Vitamin B.

September 15, 2011 9:32 PM - BoerumHillScott
2001 was a very strange year for me.
Moving from Birmingham to Houston (with tons of money being thrown at me to me do so), leaving good friends behind, my son being born premature, Tropical storm Allison flooding my house and the hospital my son was at, 9/11, the brief euphoria as Enron melted down and my company being number 1 in energy trading, then the realization that we were going down with them.
September 15, 2011 9:33 PM - petebklyn
don't you have one of those motorized ones yet where could drive yourself into the harbor instead of looking for a hand?
September 15, 2011 9:38 PM - Donatella
I ran a research team there and right before Enron, senior management was still beating the drum to bring people in, relocating them with fancy dancy packages. Then Enron happened and they were sort of in denial about what this meant for the industry. Still pushing me to hire. I wouldn't hire anyone outside the company. I got some people from another division that was closing and in the end, we all were laid off and the company closed, but all these people got packages. I think back and that is one thing I think I did right. I followed my instinct & didn't disrupt anyone's life by bringing them in.

I drink about a quart of milk a day.
I think the way ricotta is made means that it's quite close to being raw milk so more of a trigger for lactose intolerance. I have a friend who is very much so - can't even have French bread made w/ a TB of milk in it. She's Italian & loves cheese, poor dear.
September 15, 2011 9:44 PM - Donatella
I love milk. I drink Skim Plus. No fat but sort of boiled down somehow to make it a creamier consistency. I always drank a lot of milk. Or 2%. And cereal in the am.

arkady, I am of the mediterranean persuasion and as a rule we do not drink milk. Although we do eat cheese and other dairy products like yogurt.

Minard, I read that Southern Europeans are lactose intolerant. I seem to remember that 40% of them have the ability to manufacture lactase into adulthood. I read that in the Harold McGee book. I also learned how ice cream is made. Sugar reduces the freezing point of the cream in ice cream, so it is put in a cylinder surrounded on the outside by slushy water mixed with salt which lowers the freezing temperature of the water and allows the ice cream to freeze. Who knew?

Didn't cover most of the names (in the index they were 'utilities' rather than 'energy') but can't remember any others that technically went bankrupt. Most shut down or scaled back.
Not sure who was #2. Were you at El Paso? They didn't go bankrupt but it was a concern for a while. Williams came within a day (Know that for a fact), Dynegy very close in 02 and again currently.
