Good Morning. It is too early for me to be focused on Dodd Frank but that is what I am doing today...... spending the day on how Dodd Frank will affect the energy derivatives industry. IMHO, it is a holy mess... Obama gets a hard kick in the shins from Park Slope and Queens.... Have a great day everyone.

Obama Approval Plummets Among Americans Skeptical of Jobs Plan

Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- A majority of Americans donít believe President Barack Obamaís $447 billion jobs plan will help lower the unemployment rate, skepticism he must overcome as he presses Congress for action and positions himself for re- election.
The downbeat assessment of the American Jobs Act reflects a growing and broad sense of dissatisfaction with the president. Americans disapprove of his handling of the economy by 62 percent to 33 percent, a Bloomberg National Poll conducted Sept. 9-12 shows. The disapproval number represents a nine point increase from six months ago.
The presidentís job approval rating also stands at the lowest of his presidency -- 45 percent. That rating is driven down in part by a majority of independents, 53 percent, who disapprove of his performance.

Discuss.

Obama's approval rating is a testament to his incredible Charisma. Anyone else would be run out of town on a rail.
Highest poverty rate, and highest long term unemployment rate recorded.
He has 8 months to pull off a miracle.
Really doubt that the Jobs Bill will deliver any such thing.

"A dramatic rescue of a motorcyclist trapped underneath a burning car was caught on tape in Logan, Utah. The crash occurred when a BMW pulled out of a parking lot and in front of the motorcyclist. Thanks to the heroic work of a dozen bystanders, the burning car was lifted and the life of 21-year-old Brandon Wright was saved."

A little-known Republican businessman from Queens, channeling voter discontent with President Obama into an upset, won election to Congress on Tuesday from the heavily Democratic district in New York City last represented by Anthony D. Weiner.

Foreign aid and lots of other programs should go, but in reality they make a small part of the overall budget.

Nothing on the expense side other than reductions in Social Security, Military, Medicare, and Medicaid really matter in terms of the long term deficit.

Getting rid of Medicare Part D seems like a no-brainier, as does raising the starting age of Social Security to match increases in life expectancy.

denton -- It's a canon at the higher end of P&S in terms of quality, lens, zoom, functions, video quality, etc. Paid a little over $300 at J&R about 12-15 months ago. I figure I will go up to about 40-45% of that on a repair. No harm in getting estimate, then deciding. I've got all my vaca photos downloaded off the card, though.

Meanwhile, my daughter is getting serious about photography. Plunked down about $200 of allowance savings (she never spends it, we are actually on the low end of allowance amongst her peers) on a camera and is having lots of fun with it. Now that I can explain the functions you discussed, she might be interested.

I've come to appreciate President Obama. He is turning out to be "Moses" for we conservative Republicans. Consider the parallels:

-Moses lead the Jews out of exile and to the Promised Land. In doing so, he performed some pretty impressive miracles: parting the Red Sea, etc.

-President Moses Obama is leading us conservative Republicans out of exile and to the Promised Land of Majority Status. And if you think the original Moses' miracles were pretty impressive, consider what our modern-day guy has pulled off:

i) "Teddy Kennedy's Seat" delivered to the Republicans
ii) NY 9 delivered to the Republicans.

Unlike the original, however, President Moses Obama will get to walk in the Republican Promised Land, come 2012.

It's a beautiful thing.

Grover Cleveland served 2 non-consecutive terms.
I don't know of any other former presidents who tried to run again, although it would not surprise me.

The last person to loose in the general election and become the party's nominee again was Nixon.

Yesterday I went to visit a company that is well-known in the "interconnection" business. They make many of the connectors and interconnections you see on your electronic gizmos, both on the devices' case and inside.

They had been devoting some business development money on interconnections for alternative-energy technology like wind turbines and solar panels. They predicted, however, that this nascent industry will soon come to a crash, as a result of the Eurozone implosion. Many of the European countries had provided heavy subsidies for these technologies. Given what is going on, however, they can no longer afford them. Italy was the first to announce the end of all subsidies. It won't be the last.

This story about the mom on long island who got into a fight with girls bullying her daughter is interesting.

http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Mom-Fights-Girl-Long-Island-William-Floyd-Elementary-129755673.html

The mom appears to be totally wrong for encouraging a fight,
however I recall a couple of times when my mom got involved in a fight involving my older sister and a bunch of mean girls and another with my younger sister.

I distinctly remember my older sister being taunted by some girls who actually came to our house shouting whatever mean things until my sister finally just walked out and slapped the girl silly.
That was classic.
My mom got involved by picking up some kind of wooden lawn divider and threatened to beat the other girls if they didn't move on.

This one goes under the : Computers for Dummies

Edited at September 14, 2011 1:38 PM

Legion, here's the answer from the dummy (ie not optimal answer). use an external drive as the go-between. transfer it onto hard drive then from external drive onto the other computer. am thinking the optimal answer is to use some USB, hdmi, and/or ethernet cable to connet the 2 computers and transfer the phones directly from 1 computer to the other

Speaking of crownmolding, did anyone notice that Mr. B. deleted a whole thread in which someone "outed" him as 11217. It happened on the same day my post was deleted and I was banned.

Actually, the thread was hilarious. It concerned some rental housing in Williamsburg, the neighborhood that 11217 loved to hate the most. He was up to his usual schtick, and someone (not a regular) said something like "Hey, I see that 11217 is back as crownmolding". Crownmolding tried to downplay it, saying something like: "Who is 11217? I never heard of him?" The poster called his bluff, saying something like "Oh I am glad to hear it, because he was the most shrill, narcissistic PS shill I ever saw on this site". Next thing you know, Mr. B. pulls the entire thread.
September 14, 2011 1:58 PM - More4Less
Legion, it's a copy & paste to transfer files on external hard drive then another copy & paste from hard drive onto the other computer's hard drive. when you connect the external hard drive, you'll see it listed when you're in file manager. it usually lists the brand and/or model name of the external drive. sometimes, it's the D drive, sometimes the E drive - it all depends on what letters you've already used for whatever drives you have on the computer

i actually know the answer to this. it has to do with gravity and the way we evolved upright. something like that... when we use to walk sorta like monkeys the poop would just plop out and no wiping needing. also only about 15% of Earth's human population even wipe their asses after shitting!!!

benson, I was thinking of our moose/evolution exchange. You were incredulous at my suggestion that the moose is an evolutionary success. Moose are well adapted to their environment. I think there is little worry that humans might evolve into moose (but see E. Ionesco, "Rhinoceros"). Your question is properly viewed from the perspective of the moose's evolutionary ancestor and I suppose, if given the choice, the ancestor would reply "yes, if that means I will be better adapted to my future environment than I would be if I do not evolve from my present form." Yes, i am thinking way too seriously about this, but it is only to stop my audible giggles with respect to this thread. For some reason I find it truly hilarious.

So, in other words, rather than giving our public officials the opportunity to provide inspiring speeches or, in this case, make an ass out of themselves and be held accountable, we should follow the diktat of one man who states that all we shall do, year after year, is read off the names of the victims.

Sign me upl!

PS: I never got to respond to Slopey's comment, since I had to go (i.e. what could have been said on the 10th anniversary of tthe event?). It seems to me that as we are still fighting a war that was the result of this event, there is still plenty to say. President Obama could have used the occasion to talk about where we are, and where we are going, 10 years on.

Because, benson, it was a day for remembering those who died and those who survived. It wasn't about politics or policies. Don't make it sound like Obama was at fault- Bloomberg made the decision and it is one of those rare times when I agree with him. On the other hand, he is the man to say he got Bin Laden-. If it's too much for you to want to honor and remember the close to 3000 people who died on 9/11, by all means ignore the reading of the names and don't bother going to the memorial. Although I can't imagine why it bothers you that Obama wasn't allowed to make a sure to be inspiring speech. We all know you would find fault with it anyway.

I love national parks, and I would not spend more than 2 days on the rim of the Grand Canyon.

I highly recommend Zion Nation Park, about a 4 hour drive.
I think it has much prettier scenery than the Grand Canyon and is more beautiful, although I will admit it is not nearly as impressive in terms of scale.

Zion is in Southern Utah.
It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.
Bryce Canyon National Park is also in Southern Utah, and I love it as well, although more as a place to spend a few hours rather than a few days.
September 14, 2011 8:14 PM - Arkady
bxgrl - A friend of mine stayed at Zion. They try to fit the name. Breakfast included a 'holly' bread - actually a challah but they didn't know that.

Too true, Pete. I'm sure I wore out a copy of that record.

I've never been to Utah- I'd love to see Zion from the sound of it. when we weer kids every summer my dad would load us in the car and we would go cross country- usually to see my brother who was in the Air Force.

LOL, arkady! When my sister and I were little and we would go to the bakery to get Challah for the Sabbath, I would mispronounce it as "holly." Because I had hearing problems even then, I misheard it :)

Bxgrl;

If Rob and Cobble have something going on in private, than it should be resolved in that space. In this public forum, however, my remarks were appropriate. It was a gratuitous, personal and vicious attack.
September 14, 2011 8:48 PM - etson
Wow, I agree with bxgrl, not benson, re both speeches on 9/11 and rob (vs?) cobble.

My avatar is Opus the Penguin from the Bloom County cartoon. I used to have Opus holding an ice cream scoop with $10 scoops of Blue Marble (for *rob*'s benefit). But, then Biff and I went on a pub crawl at the height of Hurricane Irene so I thought the drunken penguin wearing a lamp shade and sporting a beer stein more fitting.

Apparently, they want a gynecological and proctological exam for myself and BH, respectively, and a full congressional inquiry into our financial resources, in order to be given the privilege of applying to be considered to rent the apt!! The letter the broker sent with the application also seems to imply that they are hoping to stimulate a bidding war!! (Wheee!?)

Applying for apartments to rent in a coops is a hassle. You have to go through about the same process as buying the apartment. We pretty much use it to discourage subletting. We allow it for 4 years max. Some coops are not as strict though. Most do follow same rules as us since you don't want to live in a coop full of sublettees. Not the same genuine care and regard for the building as the owners/shareholders. Plus if coop have more that certain percentage of sublets, it gets hard to secure a mortgage. Banks don't like that as well.

Cobble, you want to be either close to Church Ave and Ocean PKWY (close to Windsor Terrace restaurants, park, C-town, Foodtown, Church Ave shopping) or close to Cortelyou and Coney Island (Flatbush Coop - Not like Park slope coop - you can shop without being a member but members get discounts, and Ditmas Park restaurants and amenities). I honestly would look on Ocean PKWY anywhere between Church ave and Cortelyou. Close to 2 train lines (F, B/Q), close to loads of supermarkets and restaurants and you get to walk to both Windsor Terrace and Ditmas Park. You will also be 5 express stops from the beach. Nice in the summertime.

September 14, 2011 9:47 PM - minard lafever
Cobble,
let me be the first to break this possibility to you....
maybe now, after looking around a bit, you just agree to pay the hike in rent, maybe with a little negotiation?
I mean if you can't find anything comparable for the same price, why move? May as well not afford the place you already know.

We've considered it, Minard. The problem with that is that we'd be in the same position in a year or two when they would likely want to hike it again to the rent they want...$3k. We need a place we know we can stay in for 4-5 years while I get back on my feet financially.

Cobble, for 1,400 you can definitely find a very nice one bedroom in the area I told you. Problem is here is that most building are like 1920s through 1950s so not much for chances to score anything with outdoor space but some do have balconies. Some even have pools. Look around.
September 14, 2011 9:51 PM - Arkady

Cobble, maybe you would just consider buying for a short term in my area. There is a sponsor big one bedroom unit that I know about to go for sale in my building for 160K (but they'll take less). No board approval and as long as you can secure a mortgage and have 20% down, you'll be in hassle free. 35K down. And your mortgage payments plus maintenance will be around 1,400 a month and that'll be tax deductible so really only about 1,200 in real cash outflow. I am not assuming you have a downpayment but maybe borrow from family members and pay back little by little. You wont lose out.

Cobble, two or three years from now you could be in a very different situation.
Plus you would save the cost of a move right now.
figure out how much it would cost to move and them amortize it, like a mortgage, over say three years.
If you can delay that cost for three years, you may be better off.
I don't think you want to move -and you should not move unless you are better off somewhere else.
Listen to me please: never, never, never backtrack.

Minard, I kinda agree with you on that.

As much as I love Kensington and Ditmas Park, it's definitely a bit of a downgrade from Cobble Hill, Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights. If I could afford something in those areas, I wouldn't be where I am.

Having said that, my area is still great. No offense to Crown Heights ladies but the rents in crown heights are about the same as Kensington and you cannot compare the two on relative safety and amenities. Plus depending where you are in either of those hoods, commutes to Manhattan is about the same. The only thing Crown Heights does have over my area is the architecture.

We've done the math, over and over, Minard. (BH is a big brain math guy.) It makes more sense for us to move. Yes, it's killing me to leave "my" neighborhood, but I'm not a princess as some would call me. And BH has been carrying me for too long as it is. This move will take some of the pressure off him.

I like the Queen, too. And the Iron Lady. Do go for it!

Cobble, this one is literally right by the park. More Windsor Terrace than Kensington.

OK Craigslist has garbage. I suggest you walk around and ask the supers in the buildings. That's what most people in my neighborhood seem to do. My super gets approached everyday asking about rentals.

Hah, I would get in trouble(mostly with Arkady, but others also if they recognixed) if I started posting some of other the Brit conservatives I admire the most..

Here's a non-controvesrial one who was arguably a conservative at heart:

Cobble,
this is all I am going to say ever, on this subject.
BH should feel priviliged, and I am sure he does, to "carry" you. You are being melodramatic to put it that way.
My father, who is a smart but utterly unbearable immigrant type, would holler at you both and tell you not to bring disgrace to the family by moving somewhere icky.
Never go backwards unless under court order, jury-imposed jail sentence, or criminal malfeasance verdict.
Capice?
