Yes, the hamster wheel in my head was going full-speed! Nope, no work today. It changes week to week, which is ok, I just wish there was more of it!

Great match last night, Nadal is a true gentlemen. As for Serena, she should know she's in trouble if the only person defending you is Pam Shriver, who was the female McEnroe in her day.

I used to go to the US open with an old friend during McEnroe's glory days. I couldn't take his act. My friend liked him since he was a great player. I think he was a real outlier at the time. People wore white and behaved.

Oh dear...I would never have fit in at that time! I'm in the camp of the uncouth tennis fans...screaming, shouting, grunting, cursing - shameful really! DonaT, I take it you wouldn't want to join Cobble and I and the Open next year? I promise we'll try to be good :-)

What is a Financial Bail-Out?

It is a slow day in a damp little Irish town. The rain is beating down harshly, and all the streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt and everybody lives on credit.

...On this particular day a rich German tourist is driving through the town, stops at the local hotel and lays a 100 note on the desk, telling the hotel owner he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one to spend the night.

The owner gives him some room-keys and, as soon as the visitor has walked upstairs, the hotelier grabs the 100 note and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher.

The butcher takes the 100 note and rushes down the street to repay his debt to the pig farmer. The pig farmer takes the 100 note and heads off to pay his bill at the supplier of animal feed and fuel. The guy at the Farmers' Co-op takes the 100 note and runs to pay his drinks bill at the friendly neighbourhood pub. The pub owner slips the money along to the local prostitute drinking at the bar - who, in spite of facing hard times, has always gladly offered him her services on credit.

The hooker then rushes over to the hotel and pays off her room bill to the hotel owner with the 100 note.

The hotel proprietor quietly replaces the 100 note back on the counter, so that the rich traveller will not suspect anything.

At that moment the traveller comes down the stairs, states that none of the rooms are satisfactory, picks up the 100 note, pockets it and leaves town.

...No one has produced anything. No one has earned anything. However, the whole town is now out of debt and looking to the future with a lot more optimism.

And that, dear ladies and gentlemen, is how a basic financial bailout package works!

I like tennis, but I am not a lunatic fan. I used to go with this work friend of mine (the REAL tennis fan) and I would analyze the players' looks and outfits, style, emotions. This was the era of Billy Jean King, Martina, Tracy Austin, Pam Shriver, Connors, McEnroe, Bjorg, etc. I liked the whole scene but could take it or leave it.

I think John Prine should have the last word on this morning's discussion:

Well, I packed my bags and bought myself a ticket
For the land of the tall palm tree.
Aloha ol Milwaukee,
Hello Waikiki
I just stepped down from the airplane
When I heard her say.
Wacka Wacka, nuka, licka
Wacka Wacka nuka licka
Would you like a Lay

Hey, Lets talk dirty in Hawaiian
Whisper in my ear
Kicka puka maka waawaa heenee
Are the words I long to hear
Lay your coconut on my tickie
Whata hecka mooka mooka dear.
Lets talk dirty in Hawaiian
Say the words I long to hear.

Its a ukulele Honolulu sunset
Listen to the grass skirts sway
Drinking rum from the pineapple
Out on Honolulu Bay
The steel guitars are playin
While shes talking with her hands
Gimme gimme oaka doaka
Make a wish and wanta poka
Words I understand.

[CHorus : Lets talk dirty in Hawaiian etc.]

Well, I bought a lota junka with my moola
And I sent it to the folks back home
I never had a chance to dance the hula
Well, I guess I should have known
When you start talkin
To the sweet wahenie
Walkin in the pale moonlight
Oaka Noaka what I said
Naaka Waaka Siscum baakas
Hope I said it right.

[Chorus]

[Apologies to any Hawaiian PLUSAs or lurkers.]

Answer this for me. Why the hell don't LL's consider the hallway and the stairs when renting apts. If the hallway and stairs look like CRAP, how is this a good introduction to the apt.? I'm not saying it needs to be pristine, I'm talking basic, clean and safe feeling. So you're not imagining being murdered on the steps or falling through one of the treads. OY!

M4L, One was CH, the other was the far end of CG. Ridiculous. For the rent they want, the hallways should be pristine. They should not make you feel like you could be living in semi-deserted building. Likewise, what's with the fluorescent lights in kitchens and bathrooms? I find them seriously depressing.

In other news, we just witnessed a HS kid rip off a young woman's tablet on the G train at Clinton-Washington. The kid grabbed it out of her hands (yes, the idiot woman had it out and was using it, on a train full of teenagers) and jumped off the train. There was a cop on the platform not 20 feet away. The woman went running after him, and so did some other people. I hope they got him.

I'm starting to question using my ipod on the train. I listen to audiobooks and play solitaire on it while I'm being read to. Maybe not such a good idea anymore. I remember when Ipods first came out and everyone was stealing those. Back then, the 'trick' was to switch out the obvious white earphones (which were craptastic anyway) for those of another color/style so it wouldn't be obvious you had an ipod in your pocket as opposed to a regular walkman.

M4L, We don't actually believe we will end up finding a place here in CH, it's beyond ridiculous, but we're looking here anyway. We're heading over to Kensington/Ditmas this weekend. Seems more in the range of what we're looking for. We squished ourselves into this apt. because of CGar's deck. It was too nice and perfectly located to pass up. I kinda doubt we'd find a place in Clinton Hill either. But we both like/know it well, so we're looking. We're also considering Prospect Heights, but I'm less enthused than BH. But I haven't crossed it off the list yet. A great place could pop up at anytime. $2600 is more than we want to pay, but it's not ruled out if the place is exactly perfectly what we want.

(not in those words exactly, but i know what she meant.) i asked if i should feel guilty about the food im giving him. glad that's a relief so i dont have to feel guilt about not buying 50 dollar bags of dog food every week!

welcome to Midwestern MoonfaceVille... Population, 3 million. you know you CAN clean up dirty apartments, and i have a hard time believe there are "no appliances" perhaps no 6 grill range stainless steel stoves you mean? i mean really, are you really telling me youre coming across apartments with no basic appliances?

Cobble - You're bound to find something better. My ex-bf's places are 1500 sq. ft, 2 b.r., d/w, w/d, ice maker, huge closets for $2600 in S. Slope & when I showed one a year ago people said it was about market rate. Prices should be lower now.
September 13, 2011 9:35 PM - gay smurf hoodlum
and NEWSFLASH! things wouldnt BE so expensive if some of you stop pandering to lame businesses that charge 10 dollars for a scoop of ice cream, 5 bux of a small cup of coffee, and other lame ass ammenities that do nothing but jack up the rent!!! stop complaining! do you see ME complaining about this shit? NO! i go about my day hustling in ways ive never hustled before, stealing lemons, and scrimping like the biggest scrimp on the east coast!

if you want to live in a nice neighborhood you HAVE to pony up and stop whinining about how expensive the rent is. ever notice how i NEVER complain about my rent? i do complain about ways to scrimp tho, but that aint my fault, it's the fault of intrastrate moonfacification. take it up with your local politians. i dont vote, so really i dont get a say (lol)

Perhaps elsewhere, Arkady, but not here in Cobble Hill/CG. LL's have lost their minds. $24-2600 is minimum, and then it just skyrockets from there.

Rob, you can kiss my ass.

well if it came across and mean and nasty, then for that i apologize. tho i dont do provocative (that's forced and often phoney) and i dont like arguing with people. im just saying, it's par the course to have to sometimes move every year in nyc if youre a renter. i dont see it as any more perplexing than having to wipe your ass after you take a dump. and as a drama queen myself, i can call out others on their dramarama.

Since when are you the arbiter? Set-tos over issues & opinions are not sacrosanct - pointed personal remarks made to someone w/ whom you are not actively discussing a particular topic are petty & ugly. You made a personal attack on someone who had reported on an event in her day. That warrants either an "oh, that's rotten" or a staying silent.

It looks like it's the top floor, with sky light over stairs. I'm not thrilled with top floors because they get super hot in the summer. But the space looks clean and nice. Unlike the place across the street we saw today, which was just heinous except for the sq. footage.

I have one top floor room that stays cool in summer if I keep curtains closed. It has better insulation than the other top floor rooms & that makes a massive difference summer & winter. If you can see the place tomorrow in early afternoon, it's supposed to be sunny & 85.

Just wanted to say Cobble..... where I am, Fort Greene bordering Clinton Hill, last I checked, 700 sq ft brownstone floors are going for around 1800 dollars. These are ones in fairly decent shape. I could be a little off the market, but I think you are going to be able to find something. Also check Rent.com there are a lot of apartments listed there, no fee.
