David Blanchflower, a prof of economics at Dartmouth and former member of the Bank of England's Montetary Policy Committee presented to a VERY wealthy family office along with Roubini, Faber, Gary Shilling, Fred Hickey and others (a VERY VERY wealthy family). Blankflower is a very close friend of Bernanke's and Fred Hickey (whom we have known for decades) told us he had a private conversation with Blankflower and that Bernanke was worried about a "death spiral" and that you could "count on" Bernanke to announce asset purchases.

We covered all our shorts at the close and started buying yesterday.

Hay Sent to China Cheaper than to California!!!!!

Aug. 9 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. hay, the country’s third-largest crop by value, is now cheaper to ship to China than to farmers in central California, compounding shortages that mean record prices for the dairy industry.
Ocean freight costs about $30 a short ton (0.91 metric
tons) to send hay to Asia from Los Angeles, compared with $53 to truck the crop from southern California to the center of the state

So, why does Perry need to schedule a speech to signal his intent to later make another speech where he will announce that he will decide to run?

Shit or get off the pot.

"So, why does Perry need to schedule a speech to signal his intent to later make another speech where he will announce that he will decide to run?"

"Perry's appearance in South Carolina, which conducts the first primary in the South, could upstage a Republican straw poll being held the same day in Ames, Iowa, and dramatically shake up the GOP nomination battle." Miami Herald

Because his speech is happening at the same time as the Republican Straw Poll in Iowa, which he wants to try to detract attention from/put spotlight on himself , and it makes it just fun for him! : P

I think the most powerful tool that the Fed has right now is to start charging member banks for holding unused reserves. This is what Bank of New York Mellon told it's clients last week and it was the announcement (on Thursday) that pushed the market down.

If the fed were to do this, the banks cannot do anything else except start to lend.

#15
August 9, 2011 8:22 AM - BoerumHillScott
I think Perry has the best chances of any of the GOP candidates.

He has a pretty competent record as an executive, and the stupid statements and decisions he has made are pretty minor compared to the rest of the field.

I don't think he is a great genius, but he could probably do a decent job running the country from a big policy perspective.

I don't think I would ever vote for him because of stance on most social issues goes against mine, and the President has very real power to influence that not just while in office but for years to come via the Supreme Court.

Just to set the record straight on debt ceiling votes and who may or may not be the stubborn ones:

We just thought it might be worthwhile noting that back in
’06, before he was President and when he was the junior
Senator from Illinois, President Obama voted against the
Bush Administration’s request for a debt ceiling increase
one time. The other two times he had the opportunity to
do so, he did not show for the votes on the Senate floor.
We thought that interesting.

Worse, the Democrat Majority Leader in the Senate, Sen.
Reid, voted against every single debt ceiling increase
request when the Republicans controlled the Senate
briefly during the years noted above. He was open in his
opposition; he was adamant in his anger with the
Republican demands. Now he has been just as adamant
in his anger with the Tea Party-ites, calling them terrorists
and the like. We just thought everyone should know. It
seems reasonable and bipartisan on our part to do so.

Interesting that hay ranks so high as a cash crop. Never thought of that but it makes sense. Agricultural products and entertainment are still big American exports. I have lived through so many of these stock market crashes that they are getting tedious. I think the best thing to do is to pay off your mortgage and buy tax-free bonds. period. Anonymous: what would you have done in this situation? crazy morning. left my apartment at 830, hear a scream up the block and people walking toward it, tried to see from a block away what was going on but then it seemed like nothing. then a minute later im walking down 1st street toward 4th avenue and i hear "PLEASE HELP ME!!! he stole my phone PLEASE HELP ME!" i turned around and there's a woman up the block screaming that repeatedly. then walzting by (well running super super slowly) are two kids (they could NOT have been older than 11) one with phone in hand, then they picked up speed. she kept screaming CHASE THEM THEY HAVE MY PHONE. okay, should i have snagged it out of his hand when i potentially had the chance? no one else on the street paid this whole scene ANY attention and just kept walking. i walked toward mcdonalds and craned my head toward the drive thru to make it LOOK like i was trying to do something, but by the time they were already across 4th avenue heading toward 3rd. i really hope this woman doesnt live near me (probably does) and is all like oh there's that coward. lol. but at the same time i wasnt in the mood to possibly get shanked or shivved by two hoodrats before coming to work. anyway, people, stop being so obvlious with your electronics in public. ESPECIALLY in areas you think you are safe. honestly she was screaming like someone snatched her baby, not a damn phone. if it was a baby i would have ran after them, but a phone? no. am i a coward? honestly i felt bad becuase no one helped her, but im SURE if it was anything other than a phone they would have. i hope.

2 choices

1. if you think you can, without injury to yourself, help the woman by chasing the kids/grabbing the phone
2. if you think injury is immenint, at the very least call 911 on your phone and report a robbery and describe the kids so they can be caught.

its not necessarily cowardice to not help, as in that situation a lot of people figure that there are enough people around and one of them will surely help so i don't need to. but, that's exactly why in large group situations, the person gets no help. we have to retrain our brains to not think that way and step in. this is one time where too many cooks won't spoil the soup.

Morning all.

Although not as good as freshly picked asshat corn, Foodtown has some excellent fresh corn on the cob, which the Sainted Tenant and I have been munching on. What does corn cost in the country nowadays? At Foodtown they were having a special of 5 ears for $2. Sheesh. When I was a kid, in the country, at a roadside stand, you'd get a baker's dozen for $1.00. Ok, cars had fins then, but still. Gotta say, though, this corn was really good, with large ears, and quite juicy and tender. One of the great perks of summer.

Refuse to talk about the economy, who's to blame or politics. Let's just say there is blame for everyone, going back a generation, and no one has a clue how to fix it. End of story.

rob, there were two kids... young or not, you can still get hurt. I'd be even more worried about what kind of trouble you could get in if you hit one of them trying to defend yourself. all this not to save someone from imminent harm, but for somebody else's phone. I wouldn't feel that bad.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, DID YOU TALK TO YOUR ROOMMATE YET???

What the Fed, the gobment, the stock market, China, or anywhere, or anyone else does will affect me at some point, but it's like watching the tidal wave loom over the shore. I can't stop it. I'm sick of the faux debate between the Dems and Repubs, I'm sick of trying to assign blame to Obama, Bush, Reagan, Carter, Poppy Bush, Clinton, Ford, Nixon and/or LBJ. My personal finances are getting worse, I don't have gold to dither with, stocks to buy or sell, or even a 401K to watch disappear. I'm going to have to leave my home and leave NYC. Seriously. It maybe be scmaltzy but still a good one by Alistair Cooke.

"“In the best of times, our days are numbered anyway. So it would be a crime against nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly, that it put off enjoying those things for which we were designed in the 1st place: the opportunity to do good work, to enjoy friends, to fall in love, to hit a ball, and to bounce a baby.”

NJ and NY are mid-atlantic.

Nope. New England includes anywhere on the east side of New York (Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine). It would be strange to just skip over New York and say New Jersey is part of New England while New York is not.

It would certainly be worth a call to 911 to report that phone - not for the intrinsic value but for all the information possibly stored on it. Years ago, before cell phones, when my handbag was stolen, it wasn't credit cards, cash, etc. that had me going nuts, it was the loss of my diary of jobs coming up & my phone book.

Like your little about the Police Policy to "Shoot To Kill" in NYC but, most of the time Black men are Unarmed when the Cops shoot (List too long go look it your self)!

On Lincoln and troy Aves the Hoodlums used to shoot there guns off on New Years, The pussy cops used to ride up and say "Come on guys, please stop).

Or the time someone opened fire on the cops and they jumped back in and speed away ROTFLMMFAO!

Minard,
You're right that the UK police have been pretty incompetent so far. Hopefully they get tougher.
As for the neighborhoods - it's not just been lower middle class ones, although they have been the hardest hit - e.g. here was a mass mugging in a restaurant in Notting Hill last night (one of the wealthiest parts of the city)

I wonder if there will be repercussions for social media sites in the wake of this... I have a friend in hackney who's terrified about tweets he's seeing for another round there at 5pm. the west has loved touting social media as a positive catalyst for change in other parts of the world, but when looters use it to plan mayhem in london I think a lot of those same people will view it differently.

1) Regardless of one's view of Mrs Thatcher, anyone charting "England's decline" would date it to well before she took office. Some (incl me) would say she took tough steps and made things better, some think she made things worse. Check out the conditions for most of teh 1970's for comparison.
2) There is a lot of England, and the rest of the UK, besides London.
3) The areas which might have the best claim to have been hard done to by Thatcherism (Scotland, Wales, Northern England) are not seeing riots.

I fail to see the worth in celebrating people's finances and careers going down the tubes. Most people did not buy homes, or do anything else in this economy, with the expectation of failure, or the total mess we have now. Most people were not greedy, or gentrifying interlopers, or anything else, but normal, everyday people making long term choices for themselves and their families, under the expectation that the jobs they had, often for many years, would continue. Especially in what were stable and sustainable occupations, like teachers.

This isn't just the Wall St. bunch, hedge funders, bankers, or evil capitalists going down, it's just about everyone. The economy getting nuked is not a cause for celebration. Real people are being hurt and ruined. Real people are getting evicted and have no jobs, no homes, nothing. It has nothing to do with race. What, I don't really care what you post about, I don't care about all the cute pictures and funny people you find to illustrate your lame points, but celebrating that someone is only a pink slip and a couple of dollars away from homelessness, is cruel, bizarre, and frankly, reprehensible.

dibs, I wish I could explain it to you but my experience is with regular coops, they are difficult enough, I don't know about these limited equity deals. The ones I know do allow re-sale for a profit but the seller can only keep a small percentage of profit, the rest goes to the corporation. It's like a huge flip tax. What you're describing is totally ludicrous. It is not just limited equity it is zero equity. If xing is looking for an alternative to renting for a few years it could be OK depending on the up front cost. But it is in no way a substitute for real ownership.

No, it's not Minard. it is a cheap way of renting....pay $38k, get the apt and live in it at $550 a month which is the CCs. The special assessments are all part of the purchase price.

Leave and sell it back to the coop at the purchase price. VERY cheap rent in a nice location for the opportunity cost of investing $38k!!!!!

I'd say a pretty good deal.

I started a forum topic yesterday to discuss community standards for this site in a more focused setting:
http://lifeinbkln.com/?q=node/30

I'm sure there will be a period of adjustment before we settle down on some sort of agreed upon standard.
Alternately, I could be a dictator, but that's not really my style.

Sadly, I think that we will loose some people because they think the standards go to far or not far enough.

Setting up a site is easy. Administering it in a way that lets it flourish is not.

Why are Clash songs ricocheting through my mind today?

More wonderful summer memories: A wall of honeysuckle, sweet and tasty across the road from the chicken coops, down the low traffic lane where I learned to ride a bike. Drive-in movie theaters, and falling asleep in the back seat before the late-beat-the-traffic Sunday night drive back into NYC. Paddling in a canoe, and getting in trouble for it, even though it was only 5 feet of water. Waking up on a lounge chair in my sleeping bag when we were allowed to sleep out on the beach with 4-5 other kids one night. Waking up with the sun, rested and happy, in the way only a kid with no cares, for the moment, can be.

Anonymous: From Brian Moynihan to Bank of America

To my teammates,

Financial markets around the world are going through a period of great uncertainty. We are seeing volatility in the equity markets, including our own stock price. The management team and I understand that this is an unsettling time not just for our shareholders, but also for all of our teammates across our company who are working hard every day to deliver for our customers and clients.

The most important point to keep in mind is that our company remains financially strong – in particular, much stronger than we were either during or coming out of the economic downturn of 2008-9. A few facts:

* We continue to build our fortress balance sheet. Our Tier I Common capital ratio (8.23 percent) and excess liquidity ($402 billion) are much higher than they were a year ago, and all our capital ratios are well in excess of regulatory requirements.

* We have resolved a large portion of our legacy mortgage issues, and have more than quadrupled reserves for mortgage-related issues remaining to be settled to $18 billion over the past year.

* Our customer-focused strategy is working, and five of our six major businesses are strong and profitable.

Many economic issues are contributing to uncertainty in the markets, but one important factor is the effort of policy leaders around the world, and especially here in the U.S., to reduce sovereign budget deficits and overall debt. I hope you’ll read the other articles on Flagscape today on this and related topics.

Most of the factors driving market volatility are beyond our control. But for matters within our control, we are taking action. Most important is that we continue to execute our customer-focused strategy. This is our core responsibility – by serving customers and clients, we are growing relationships and earning healthy profits outside of the mortgage business.

As we continue to focus on serving customers and clients, it is vitally important that we adhere to all our Operating Principles, another of which is to resolve legacy issues stemming from the economic downturn. That’s why we are aggressively taking action to put the legacy mortgage issues behind the company – even at great short-term cost – and to help get the U.S. housing market going again. This will help put the U.S. economy on a stronger footing.

Be certain of this above all else: Our customer-focused strategy is working. Customers and clients are doing more business with us across the franchise and we are deepening and strengthening their relationships with us. Deposit levels and new account openings are increasing. Loan growth outside the U.S. shows that we are effectively serving our clients’ global needs. Customer satisfaction is improving. And referrals across lines of business are increasing as we build broader relationships with customers and clients. The trends we have seen for the first two quarters this year have continued in July.

We do not know how long this period of uncertainty will continue. Because we serve one in two households in the U.S. and have leading positions with the global Fortune 500 companies here and around the world – a market advantage in most respects – turbulence in the global economy will affect us as well. But we have weathered challenging times before and we will now.

We are doing everything we must do to move forward. We are strengthening our balance sheet, addressing our mortgage issues and reducing the risks in that portfolio. We are executing for our customers, especially by working with teammates to provide integrated financial solutions. We are tightening expense management, and delivering against our growth opportunities.

Our course is set, and we know our destination. We cannot control the seas around us, but with the best franchise in the industry, and the best team in place to deliver its benefits to our customers, I am confident we will achieve our goals working together.

Oh, I forgot. You don't do coherent conversations. So let's just leave it at this...while I'm off fucking myself, you be sure to go and do the same to yourself. I'm very happy with where I am now, but before I found my current place, my assumption was that I would move to Manhattan.
We gave at least a cursory glance to just about every neighborhood south of 135, and did a lot more research and apartment hunting in several.

I am biased, but I think the building I am in now has the best combination of price, features, and location of anywhere in the city.
Our current assumption is that when our lease is up in 19 months, we will look to buy in the same building.

Here's an interesting statistic from the UK:

As the riots continue around London, UK residents have turned to Amazon in order to either protect themselves or to gear up for looting of their own. In fact, sales of baseball bats have seen a 5,000% increase of their sales position, as shown on the “Movers and Shakers” page.

My building does have somewhat odd demographics.
It has a good mix of childless couples, new families, and empty nesters.

What it does not have a kids older than 5. I think we are one of 2 units out of 75 or so with someone between the ages of 6 and 25.
The building is around 4 years old and just sold the last sponsor unit.
I guess people around here don't move once their kids are older than 3 or 4.

2. Cobble, I hear you re: the Clash and the London riots. Worried if things get worse will end up with a Ghost Town ear worm (Specials). Meanwhile, to lighten things up, do you know this little couplet by Richard Thompson:
My heart started beating like a song by the Clash
I was writing checks that my body couldn't cash.
3. Oh, sh*t, there was a 3 but I forgot what it was.

August 9, 2011 3:45 PM - BoerumHillScott
I only plan on keeping the place I own until Los Angeles prices start going back up some, and I really like my 3% rate.

It looks like when the rate re-sets in October, it will be for 3% for another year, and there is a 2% cap on how much it can go up each year after that.
If rates go up too much and I'm still owning it, I'll just speed up my repayment schedule.

When I buy here, I will most likely go with a 15 or 20 year fixed.

When we bought in LA, we had to decide on putting down 20% and totally wiping out our savings, getting some sort of 80/10 loan, or paying PMI.

We went with 20% down, but a 3 year interest only loan that would let us rebuild our savings.
We had the discipline to save the difference between out interest only payment and what a 30 year payment would have been, and it ended up working out really well for us.

Anonymous: Hiya Guys,
I wanna say this last thing and I hope everyone can read this.
I know some people wanted t hear my take on the afternoon's FOMC meeting, so please out of respect do not delete
it and I'm not posting anymore on this site. I'm done with fight with I don't know in life.

Let's go..

" The Committee now expects a somewhat slower pace of recovery over coming quarters than it did at the time of the previous meeting and anticipates that the unemployment rate will decline only gradually toward levels that the Committee judges to be consistent with its dual mandate. Moreover, downside risks to the economic outlook have increased"

The FED just said "We're finished" and..

"Information received since the Federal Open Market Committee met in June indicates that economic growth so far this year has been considerably slower than the Committee had expected. Indicators suggest a deterioration in overall labor market conditions in recent months, and the unemployment rate has moved up. Household spending has flattened out, investment in nonresidential structures is still weak, and the housing sector remains depressed."

The FED just said " We've blown our wad".. 4.5 Trillion dollars flushed right down the drain boys and girls.

The Ten Year Treasury went to 2.04%, at this time I don't know where it is but, The Bond Market is calling for a DEPRESSION RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW!!!!!

The Fed has taken away the Punch Bowl, The FED should've displayed a Bazooka but, it's a hand in a bad with nothing.

On that note I wish everyone here good luck and I mean that, I hope this place is successful but, i'm outta here..

another kind of disturbing thing about the London riots is that it seems the rioters are picking the prettiest corner buildings, "listed" buildings -their landmark designation- to set on fire. I don't like the implications of that.

August 9, 2011 6:48 PM - cobblehiller
Ah, context is king. Got it. I bet you would have gotten someone coming in here and going over the top with a southern attitude/dress/whatever kind of thing.

Well, as someone in a Landmarked district, I would expect you wouldn't take to kindly to that happening! It's a class thing to some extent. I know etson disagreed with the thought earlier, but I think there is likely an element of this mixed in. Haves and havenots. It's an age old story.

while i like to say id totally join in on mass looting if it ever happened here, something tells me i probably wouldnt. the only thing i have no problems looting are tomatos for some strange reason and that's soooo rare anyway.

remember Looty the Looter, the infamous Katrina looter!?!? looting bottles of heineken lol. i wouldnt consider that looting tho, i think he was just doing what he had to do in that situation. it's not he was stealing precious food away from kids

Yes, rob, (yawn) I've been listening to the news, I've heard that people are using Twitter, etc. to "organize" the riots.

did everyone read MM's essay on slavery in Ye Olde New York? It is good! Got a lot of reaction from people, as did my comment that slavery is not really the same as genocide. Ka-Boom! I knew that would get a rise out of folk.

Anonymous: i read all of montrose's articles. the pool series was my favorite one. i have zero interest in slavery topics for some reason as no one im related to ever was involved in that shit. plus it's too hot-button issue for me and i dont particularly have anything to add except that being a slave must have sucked.

rob, the pool articles were my favorite as well. The pools were an incredible public project at a time when the country was broke on its ass. Goes to show, right?
As for slavery, you are right again, it is a hot button topic even though it has long ceased to exist. I think being a slave must have sucked big time. But I also think many of us, black and white, who have long roots in America, are more than likely to be descendants of both slaves and slave owners. So what part of our DNA do we wish to disown?
