Site overview - groups, posts, comments
February 27, 2015 8:26 AM - BoerumHillScott
The three levels of content on the site are groups, posts, and comments, replacing the previous mix of articles (with comments), forum topics, forum posts (with comments), and pages.

A group is primary a container for posts.

There are two types of groups: public, which can be seen by everyone, and private groups, which can only be seen by members.

Public groups are farther divided into two types: ones people who are not logged in can see all content, and limited public groups where people who are not logged in can only see posts, and nto comments or images.

Private groups are farther divided into two types: ones where anyone logged in user can join, and ones where only invited users can join.

Inside groups, posts can be created. For public groups, only users with "Author" level of access can create post. Inside private groups, any member can create a post.

If a post has not had any comments made to it yet, it can be deleted by the creator, users with "Editor" access in public groups, and by group owners and moderators in private groups. Once a comment has been made to a post, it can only be deleted by an administrator.

A post supports a wide range of HTML formatting, and can have multiple images.

Site administrators or owners of private groups can "lock" a post, preventing additional comments or edits.

Comments can be made to any post that is not locked.

Recommendations for Mechanical Watch Repairs?
September 20, 2011 5:08 PM - Bob Marvin
I'm re-posting this here, at Arcady's request:

Not house related, but I'm hoping that some people I who like old houses also (like me) like old wrist watches. I have a late '40s Swiss chronograph that needs repairs. The last place I used for this watch was the Clock Repair People on 7th Avenue in PS, now long gone, Any recomendations, preferably, but not necessarily, in Brooklyn. The watch is fairly good quality but not a high end brand. Nevertheless, I realize that chronograph repairs can be costly.

Additional domain name - lifeinbklyn.com
September 2, 2011 8:26 AM - BoerumHillScott
Yesterday evening, I registered lifeinbklyn.com and pointed it here.
I did this both to help people with spelling/memory problems, as well as to keep someone else in the future from registering a name so similar to hours.

In the first few days of the site, it was mentioned that it would be a more logical name of our site, since bklyn is a more common abbreviation than bkln. There is no technical reason why would could not promote that as the primary name. It is not a question that I have any strong feelings on.

The only downside from switching names is that people who are logged in under one URL would have to re-log in if they enter the other.

The Booth
August 8, 2011 6:47 PM - BoerumHillScott
******** WARNING: NSFW pictures below *******

Based on a drunken idea that I think Rob came up with at Montero, I have created a new private, members only forum called "The Booth."
The idea behind The Booth is that it is a place for things that too offensive to be placed on the public areas of the site.

I want to keep rules to a minimum, although things that will get the site shut down or get me in legal trouble are still off limits.

If you want to be a member, reply here or send me an e-mail with your username to boerumhillscott@gmail.com

Not sure what is causing this bug, but I'm looking into it.

Community Standards
August 8, 2011 11:35 AM - BoerumHillScott
OK, this has been talked about before, but I wanted a thread more focused on it.

The question is, what should out community standards be for public comments?

Clear prohibitions for me include:
- Non-pubic, personal information about others
- Pornographic Images
- Bestiality Images

Other areas that are more grey include:
- repeated and malicious personal attacks
- Racism and hate speech

Other thoughts or categories?

In the near future I am looking for ways to have private areas where some of the standards could be relaxed.
However, even in private areas there will need to be some sort of standards to meet legal requirements.

Got ideas? Post them here! Seriously- let's figure out what LifeinBkln is about. Do we want other sections- like a DIY forum? Events? Slice of BK Life articles? Neighborhoods? We've got a great opportunity here- let's make the most of it. we are one eccentric, feisty, bright and funny group of people. We are open and welcoming OK- so sometimes we are foul-mouthed, antsy and dorkish- no one's perfect. But we are about loving Brooklyn, and cats ;-)
