Making the site private?
June 3, 2015 4:43 PM - BoerumHillScott
A couple of debates are going on, and I think it makes sense to have one place to discuss that's not buried in various OT threads.

Right now, the public groups, including this one and the OT can be read by anyone on the internet, and are included in search engines such as Google. Public groups are managed by site admins/editors, and new posts can only be bade by site authors.

Private groups cannot be seen by people who are not members, which also means that they cannot be seen by people not logged in or search engines.

I see several options when it comes to "privacy" (Note: I put privacy in quotes because the policy of the site is still to let anyone join who is not an obvious spammer or has previously been banned).
- Keep things as is.
- Create a new type of public group that can only be seen by logged in members.
- Make it so all public groups can only be seen by logged in members.
- Something else????

LifeinBklyn 2.06 - the Ignore edition
May 28, 2015 9:44 PM - BoerumHillScott
Over the past week, I've made a number of minor enhancements to the site, largely behind the scenes with backups, session management, logging, and admin interfaces.

The key user-side feature being released is "Ignore."

Go to someone's profile page (the easiest way is by clicking on their avatar next to a comment), and there is an option to ignore the person.

When ignoring a person, you will not see any comments they make, and in other places you will not see their name or avatar.
A list of people you are ignoring will be show on the left side, with links to take you back to their profile and stop ignoring them.

Please note that due to the way new comment counts are kept, when you ignore and stop ignoring a person the counts may not be updated immediately or accurately.

The person you are ignoring has no way of knowing that you are doing so, and that person can still see all of your posts in public groups and private groups that you are both members of.

I also fixed an issue when editing where multiple line breaks were collapsed into one.

Site moved to new server

Hopefully things will run a bit faster now.

I also verified that daily backups are in place, and are automatically copied to a different server.

A couple of requests...
May 12, 2015 9:09 AM - rf
Hi Scott,

I know that you've been super-busy but I wonder if, when you have the time and energy, you would consider one or more of these requests:
1. An "ignore" button. I don't want to see the What's posts anymore. Seriously.
2. Removal of an author to delete responses to his/her post when s/he deletes his/her own post. The responses will stand for themselves.

Respectfully submitted.

Welcome to Life In Brooklyn! Let’s dispense with the pleasantries and get down to what you came here to read: Our Policy on Posting and Discussing Private Information:

First and foremost, you must understand that LIB is a PUBLIC SITE!!!

LIB encourages all participants to engage in conversations/debates/etc. respectfully and as fully as they wish. However, to cover our asses and to make sure you know what you are getting into here, please read the following in full.

Participants can visit the site and interact without revealing any information about themselves. If one does choose to reveal any level of personal information on our site for the purposes of correspondence, then you should know that said information is no longer private, as it exists on the never-ending interwebs! You are free to delete a comment/photo/etc. you posted in the past, but the site’s admins and editors will not take the countless hours required to do this for you. Site admins and editors will however remove violating comments/photos/etc. going forward at the aggrieved poster’s request. The repercussions of said violations will be the sole determination of the site’s Super Admin.

All participants are asked to be respectful of private information they may hold regarding other participants. Specifically, participants are asked not to divulge any personal information, whether damaging or otherwise, about other participants on the site. Failure to do so may expose you to legal action by the aggrieved poster. In no event shall LifeInBkln or its ownership, its employees or agents, or anyone who has been involved with the creation, production or delivery of these pages be held liable for any direct, incidental or consequential damages from the use of this site.

If you are comfortable with some posters and are willing to have certain aspects of your life freely discussed, carry on. We just ask that everyone use common sense and a modicum of kindness. Thank you.

Major screw up
April 19, 2015 9:45 AM - BoerumHillScott
Yesterday, the site went down due to a hardware failure at our hosting provider.
During the day they said they were restoring it, and it would come back.
This morning when I asked for a status update, they said the server was lost, and no data could be recovered.
I was making backups of the site, but was storing them on the same server, so they were all lost as well.
In the past, I also copied backups to a different server, but due to procrastination I never set up that process for the new site.
Right now, the site is running on the same server that I run various personal and other web sites on.
It should be fine here, but I will start looking into other options for hosting. My strong preference is to have the site on a virtual private server by itself in order to segregate lifeinbklyn from the other sites I run, as well as to let the two servers back each other up.
I am sorry for the inconvenience and the loss of data.
